This study examined the efficacy of experiential play therapy in reducing behavioral problems among children with Conduct Disorder (CD). Between December 2022 and May 2024, a prospective clinical trial was conducted with 20 children aged 7-12 years (10 females, 10 males) diagnosed with CD according to DSM-5 criteria. The intervention involved eight weekly, 45-minute experiential play therapy sessions. The Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) measured changes in behavioral symptoms before therapy, after the fourth session, and following the eighth session. No pharmacological treatment was provided

Children at play: Exploring perceptions and preferences in Sarawak, Malaysia, through a qualitative lens.

INTRODUCTION: Play is fundamental to children's holistic development, encompassing cognitive, emotional, and social growth. Whereas play preferences are often shaped by sociocultural and environmental factors, limited research exists on how children from different Malaysian settings, particularly in East Malaysia, perceive and engage in play. This study explores the rationale behind play experiences and preferences among urban and rural children in Sarawak. METHODS: A qualitative approach was employed to capture the experiences of 10 (n = 10) typically developing children aged 7 to 9 years fr

Teaching young children with autism to talk.

Frequent functional spoken communication is a common goal for young children with autism. We propose that the number of different nonimitative, referential, conventional, and communicative words used in a language sample is a reasonable measure of the behavior we wish to increase in such children. We review our own and others' studies focusing on young (i.e., 2 to 3 years old) children with autism to provide a rationale for including object play and nonverbal communication as potentially important treatment goals. Children who are not yet fluent in object play and nonverbal communication may n

Behavioral approaches to promoting play.

A variety of techniques grounded in behavioral psychology, and more specifically in applied behavior analysis, have been established to increase and improve play skills in children with autistic spectrum disorders. This article introduces a set of efficacious methods, which range from highly structured techniques to more naturalistic strategies. It focuses on object play as other authors in the issue discuss social play in greater depth. Behavioral techniques that are reviewed include: discrete trial training, use of stereotyped behaviors to increase play skills, pivotal response training, rec

Role-reversed systematic desensitization in the treatment of a writing phobia.

A role-reversal technique was employed to teach cognitive coping skills to a patient with a writing phobia. The patient presented desensitization scenes to the therapist and devised coping strategies for lessening anxiety. Treatment resulted in a reduction of anxiety and an increased ability to write in the presence of other people. A 10-mo. follow-up showed no relapse.

Brothers and sisters of young children with communication disorders.

Family-centered approaches have revolutionized the way that clinicians provide services to young children with communication disorders and their families. With greater recognition of the significant impact that siblings have on each other's development and the potential stress and role confusion that siblings may experience when there is childhood disability in the family, it becomes more critical that the needs of siblings are considered and addressed. In this article, a variety of issues are considered relative to siblings' experiences. First, the roles of siblings and their effects on each

Psychoanalysis as cognitive remediation: Dynamic and Vygotskian perspectives in the analysis of an early adolescent dyslexic girl.

The interface of neurocognitive problems and dynamic concerns are examined in the treatment of an early adolescent dyslexic girl. Despite previous intensive remediation, she had been unable to master reading and spelling, but made remarkable progress after a relatively brief period of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalytic and Vygotskian perspectives are integrated to provide a model of how play, within the analytic context, is mutative for learning disabled children. Through the process of reexteriorization in the transference, play allows for the interpretation and resolution of traumatic situations

Family therapy of extrafamilial sexual abuse.

A significant portion of children referred for psychiatric treatment have been sexually abused. One of the most difficult symptom manifestations to treat in young children is the management of anger. In this case, a 4-year-old boy was sexually abused by persons outside the family. He showed symptoms of regressive behavior including encopresis, enuresis, difficulty sleeping, fearfulness, recurrent nightmares, and had hyperalertness and frequent outbursts of anger. Treatment initially involved group therapy, with a concurrent parents' group. After experiencing little improvement in group therapy

Adapted Couple Therapy (ACT) for pathological gamblers: a promising avenue.

The study of the effectiveness of treatment for pathological gambling constitutes a field that is still largely unexplored. To date, the models assessed primarily target the individual and include little or no involvement of the family circle. Yet, the deleterious effects of gambling on loved ones and especially spouses are well recognized. Further, the addition of a couple modality to individual treatment has been shown to be effective on many levels in the treatment of substances use disorders. This article therefore proposes a critical review of (1) the literature providing a better underst

[Psychotherapy with physically challenged children and young people: implications of a change of paradigm].

In the light of newer scientific developments the biopsychosocial approach in psychotherapy appears to be in need of a revision. In neurosciences a paradigm change from a linear to a dynamic outlook on development as a self-organizing process guided by interactions with the environment took place under the heading of Neural Plasticity during the last ten years. This implies that the conditions of development for challenged children are not comparable with those of healthy children as the case-examples of children with Spina Bifida indicate. On this background, a pilot project was launched with

Computer-based instruction to teach professionals in Nigeria to conduct pairwise functional analyses.

Efficient, low-cost approaches for disseminating evidence-based training on behavior-analytic interventions to professionals outside of North America are needed to address the scarcity of available services. This study evaluated the effectiveness and acceptability of computer-based instruction for training professionals in Nigeria to conduct pairwise functional analyses of challenging behavior. Six professionals demonstrated high levels of procedural fidelity during role-play and in situ sessions with children after completing a self-paced computer-based instruction program that provided multi

Efficacy of Interventions to Improve Object Contact and Exploration in Full-Term Infants: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This systematic review explores interventions that improve object contact and exploration skills. Given the impact of object contact and exploration on many domains of development, there is a need to optimize these interventions. METHODS: We conducted a search of the literature involving object interaction. Data were synthesized to evaluate the effectiveness of different task-specific protocols. RESULTS: Our findings suggest that structured, repetitive practice, particularly under therapeutic guidance, improves object interaction skills in both full-term and preterm i

Further examination of video-based preference assessments without contingent access.

The first purpose of this study was to attempt to replicate previous findings that video-based preference assessments without access to selected stimuli may accurately predict relative reinforcing efficacy of stimuli. To do this, we conducted a concurrent operant reinforcer assessment in which we evaluated the relative reinforcing value of highly preferred and less preferred items identified in a video-based preference assessment. The second purpose of this study was to begin to evaluate the potential behavioral mechanisms responsible for the validity of this assessment. To conduct this analys
