Exploring postnatal and newborn home care experiences of rural and remote mothers in Pakistan whose neonates were admitted to the hospital: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The neonatal mortality rate in Pakistan has been the second highest worldwide. Since mortality rate is higher in rural area than in urban area, to understand newborn care and response to progressing disease by rural families is vital to comprehend the background of poor neonatal outcomes. But in Pakistan research on newborn home care is scarce. This study aimed to understand the local context of neonatal morbidity derived from rural and remote Pakistan by exploring the postnatal and newborn home care experiences of mothers whose neonates required admission after being cared for at

Influences of health facility type for delivery and experience of cesarean section on maternal and newborn postnatal care between birth and facility discharge in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies in the past have looked at determinants of postnatal care. However, many of them do not distinguish between postnatal care (PNC) before discharge and after discharge for women delivering at health facilities. Conceptually and practically, factors associated with PNC before discharge and after discharge should be different. This study examines key factors for maternal and newborn PNC before discharge. METHODS: Data from the 2015-16 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey were used for the study. Three categorical endogenous variables examined in the study were whet

Coverage and factors associated with receipt of early newborn postnatal care components in Afghanistan: findings from the 2022-2023 multiple indicator cluster survey.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal mortality remains high in low‑ and middle‑income countries, where early postnatal care (PNC) within 48 hours can avert many deaths. Yet neither the national coverage of newborn PNC nor the factors associated with its receipt have been assessed. OBJECTIVES: We assessed the coverage of newborn PNC components and the factors associated with their receipt in Afghanistan. METHODS: We conducted a cross‑sectional analysis of 11,965 mother-infant dyads from the 2022-2023 Afghanistan Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey. The outcome was coded 'yes' if the infant received at least tw

"Improving postnatal maternity care following severe perineal trauma by evaluating end-user's experiences of a pilot trial exploring laxative management; A qualitative study".

BACKGROUND: Trauma to the anal sphincter following vaginal birth increases the risk of anal incontinence. Laxative management in the postnatal period is recommended to improve defecation and reduce the risk of wound breakdown. Research underpinning management guidelines is lacking and omits end-users (clinicians and birthing women) involvement in evaluating pilot studies. Incorporating end-users' enhances the relevance of the research to those being investigated, improves the design, and translation of findings into clinical practice. No studies have evaluated end-users' experiences in researc

Postnatal clubs: Implementation of a differentiated and integrated model of care for mothers living with HIV and their HIV-exposed uninfected babies in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Despite the overall reduction in the HIV mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) rate in South Africa, poor adherence and retention in care during breastfeeding contribute to this period being a major driver of MTCT in South Africa. To improve this retention, postnatal clubs were created as an integrated, differentiated model of care providing psychosocial support and comprehensive care for the mother-infant pairs (MIP), including HIV and under-5-child services. We describe the implementation of these facility-based clubs and examine its health outcomes in a peri-urban primary health c

Factors associated with immediate postnatal care in Lao People's Democratic Republic: an analysis of the 2017 Lao People's Democratic Republic Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recognizes that approximately half of all maternal deaths occur in the immediate postnatal period or 24 h after birth. Forty-seven percent of Lao women aged 15-49 who delivered a baby in the last two years received a postnatal health check in the first two days after delivery. After leaving the presence of a provider, 98.5% of these women never received another postnatal check. The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in Lao PDR was 126 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2020. Immediate postnatal care (PNC) is a crucial step to improving maternal mortality. T
