The efficacy of schema therapy for personality disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Personality disorders (PDs) are prevalent and associated with functional impairment and psychological disability. Studies suggest that schema therapy (ST) may be an effective treatment for PDs. This review aimed to evaluate the efficacy of ST in treating PDs. METHOD: We conducted a comprehensive literature search using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CENTRAL, PsycInfo, and Ovid Medline. We identified eight randomized controlled trials (587 participants) and seven single-group trials (163 participants). RESULTS: Meta-analyses revealed that ST had a moderate effect size (g = 0.359)

[Cognitive behavioral group therapy for tinnitus].

Introduction and objective: The professional literature lists psychotherapy as the preferred treatment option for tinnitus. More precisely, cognitive behavioral therapy carries the greatest evidence in reducing the psychological symptoms of those affected. We launched a cognitive behavioral therapy-type group program for individuals affected by tinnitus at our clinic in February, 2022. Methods: The program takes place over seven weeks, for an hour and a half each weekly session. The assessment of the intervention is done in a pre-post arrangement, with self-administered measurements along the

The Use of Self-Disclosure in Group Therapy: Engaging Social Enactments in Modern Group Treatment.

This paper was originally a panel discussion at the Annual American Group Psychotherapy Association 2025 Conference. Working with enactments of social oppression in groups presents special challenges for group leaders trained to work exclusively within a developmental model. When the group attends to issues of social power, the leader can be seen not only as a transferential figure but also as a representative of an oppressive social class. This shift from developmental to social transference often stimulates anxiety in the group leader, who then struggles with this charged transference. This

Effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on depression and anxiety in the patients with incomplete spinal cord injury (a STROBE-compliant article).

The place of additional individual psychotherapy in the treatment of alcoholism: a randomized controlled study in nonresponders to anticraving medication-results of the PREDICT study.

BACKGROUND: Goal of the presented study is to evaluate whether alcohol-dependent patients given additional individual psychotherapy after a heavy relapse during pharmacotherapy remain abstinent for longer than those who continue with pharmacotherapy alone. METHODS: In a randomized, multicenter study, 109 alcohol-dependent patients who had suffered a heavy relapse either while receiving anticraving medication or placebo were randomized into 2 groups. One group received medication, medical management, and additional individual, disorder-specific, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy, while the co

Experiencing eight psychotherapy approaches devoted to eating disorders in a single-day workshop increases insight and motivation to engage in care: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: For patients with eating disorders (EDs), early engagement in care is usually considered a positive prognostic factor. The aim of the study was to investigate how a single-day intervention devoted to early, brief, experiential exposure to a variety of psychotherapy approaches might support commitment to change and the decision to engage in care in patients with EDs. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-nine adult outpatients newly diagnosed with an ED took part in a single-day workshop for groups of up to ten patients, where they experienced eight psychotherapeutic approaches. Motivation t

Group psychedelic-assisted therapy for mental health conditions: a mixed-methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The group therapy model has been recently favored as a means of conducting psychedelic assisted therapies for mental health disorders. However, there is a paucity of literature showing strengths or drawbacks of this approach and comparisons of safety and efficacy to individual therapy. This systematic review aims to address this gap in literature. METHODS: We included original research of group psychedelic therapy programs that were peer reviewed and published in English or where a translation was available or possible. Participants must be 18 or older and have a psychiatric diagn

Effect of short-term cognitive psychotherapy on recurrence of duodenal ulcer: a prospective randomized trial.

The aim of this prospective, randomized trial was to assess whether short-term cognitive psychotherapy (10 sessions during 4 months) could reduce the 1-year recurrence rate of duodenal ulcer. One group received psychotherapy; one group was a control group. One hundred patients, aged 17 to 64 years, with duodenal ulcer were selected from March 1989 to May 1991. The main outcome measure was relapse of duodenal ulcer, which was verified by endoscopy. When psychotherapy started after cessation of antiulcer medication, the relapse-free time was significantly shorter in the therapy group than in the

A Commentary on "A Therapist's Guide to Issues of Intimacy and Hostility Viewed as Group-Level Phenomena".

The article by J. Dugo and A. Beck, "A therapist's guide to issues of intimacy and hostility viewed as group-level phenomena" (1984), International Journal of Group Psychotherapy 34, 1, 25-45, was reviewed to determine its applicability to current clinical practice and for instructions and training for leaders of psychotherapy groups. The authors write from the psychoanalytic perspective to propose four leader roles for differing group phases and describe the impact of each leader type on the functioning of the group, the leader, and the group members. Central to the thesis for the article are

Comparative efficacy of group versus individual reminiscence therapy for depression in older adults: A network meta-analysis stratified by severity.

OBJECTIVES: To directly compare the efficacy of individual reminiscence therapy (IRT) and group reminiscence therapy (GRT) for alleviating depressive symptoms in older adults, and to evaluate their effects on secondary outcomes, including anxiety, cognitive function, life satisfaction, and quality of life. METHODS: A systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted. Eleven Chinese and English databases were searched from inception to December 1, 2025. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing IRT or GRT against a medication control group (MCG), a non-medication control grou

Mentalization-oriented psychodynamic group therapy for patients with personality disorders: a naturalistic prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with personality disorders (PDs) are often treated with non-manualized psychodynamic group therapy (PDT) lasting for several years. Non-manualized PDT often combines a variety of therapeutic approaches from different PDT traditions, including mentalization-based therapy. Currently, little is known about the effect of this long-term, costly treatment. This study investigated the extent to which patients with different PDs benefit from mentalization-oriented PDT as it is implemented in clinical practice in terms of symptom severity, interpersonal problems, and general functi

[Mentalization of conflicts in group therapy: Destructivity and survival in the benefit of cohesion].

The high prevalence of personality disorders, along with their substantial functional impact, are important societal issues, which must be addressed by mental health services. Many treatments have shown significant benefits and have contributed to alleviate the difficulties tied to these disorders. Mentalization-based therapy (MBT), which is constituted of a group therapy modality, is an evidence-based treatment of borderline personality disorder. The mentalization-based group therapy (MBT-G) modality raises many challenges for the psychotherapists. The effectiveness of the group intervention

Behavioral approaches to the problems of obesity.

Obesity is a complex and increasingly prevalent disorder that can confer a number of medical, social, and psychological difficulties.
