Spotted fever (SF) is a tick-borne zoonosis caused by bacteria of the genus Rickettsia . The disease varies in severity from mild clinical forms to severe cases. In Brazil, Rickettsia rickettsii SF is the most serious rickettsiosis and can result in death if not diagnosed and treated at the onset of symptoms. The SF mild form is caused by Rickettsia parkeri strain Atlantic Rainforest, and this etiological agent has been reported in the South, Southeast and Northeast regions of the country, in areas of preserved or little antropized Atlantic Rainforest. Amblyomma ovale is the proven vector and

The bacterium Rickettsia parkeri has been reported to infect ticks of the "Amblyomma maculatum species complex" in the New World, where it causes spotted fever illness in humans. In South America, three additional rickettsial strains, namely, Atlantic rainforest, NOD, and Parvitarsum, have been isolated from the ticks Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma nodosum, and Amblyomma parvitarsum, respectively. These three strains are phylogenetically closely related to R. parkeri, Rickettsia africae, and Rickettsia sibirica Herein, we performed a robust phylogenetic analysis encompassing 5 genes (gltA, ompA, v

Finger lime (Citrus australasica) is an Australian native citrus valued as a "citrus caviar" in high-end gastronomy, and its cultivation is expanding in the Mediterranean region. Comparative quality data for different genotypes grown under Italian conditions are still scarce. This study characterised two finger lime cultivars, 'Pink Ice' (FPI) and 'Rainforest Pearl' (FRF), and the trigeneric hybrid Faustrime (FAU), cultivated in Central Italy and harvested at commercial maturity, through an integrated assessment of morphometric, physicochemical, histochemical and sensory traits. The three acce

The prevalence and intensity of loiasis were studied in 4532 individuals selected from 42 villages from 5 contrasting bioecological zones in Cameroon from February to July 2001. The individuals were examined for Loa loa microfilaraemia using the thick blood film method. Loiasis was heterogeneously distributed from one bioecological zone to another. The occurrence of the infection was largely related to environmental factors favouring the breeding of Chrysops vectors. The mean prevalence of infection varied from 0% in the grassland savannah, 6.6% in the deciduous equatorial rainforest, 9.7% in

The Amazon rainforest is a region of global importance as it accounts for 10% of terrestrial biodiversity and stores at least 10 years' worth of global anthropogenic carbon dioxide ([Formula: see text]) emissions. However, the rainforest is currently under tremendous pressure from deforestation and the impacts of climate change, leading to rainforest degradation and perturbations of the regional carbon and water cycles. Using data sets from various sources, we produce spatial and temporal analyses of precipitation for the Amazon Basin from 1980 to 2022. Results demonstrate substantial seasonal

Rickettsioses are re-emerging vector-borne zoonoses with a global distribution. Recently, Rickettsia sp. strain Atlantic rainforest has been associated with new human spotted-fever (SF) cases in Brazil, featuring particular clinical signs: eschar formation and lymphadenopathy. These cases have been associated with the tick species, Amblyomma ovale From 2010 until 2015, the Brazilian Health Department confirmed 11 human SF cases in the Maciço de Baturité region, Ceará, Brazil. The present study reports the circulation of Rickettsia spp. in vectors from this entirely new endemic area for SF. A t

There were epidemic-epizootics of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) affecting humans and cattle in Madagascar in the district of Anjozorobe in 2008. Little is known about the role of Malagasy mosquitoes in the circulation of RVF virus. Therefore, we investigated the species diversity, dynamics and biology of potential RVF virus vectors in the rainforest, rainforest edge (village of Anorana), and savanna biotope (village of Antanifotsy) of this district between November 2008 and July 2010. We captured 56,605 adults of 35 different species. Anopheles squamosus (Theobald), Anopheles coustani (Laveran), Cul

The Australian rainforest is a rich source of medicinal plants that have evolved in the face of dramatic environmental challenges over a million years due to its prolonged geographical isolation from other continents. The rainforest consists of an inherent richness of plant secondary metabolites that are the most intense in the rainforest. The search for more potent and more bioavailable compounds from other plant sources is ongoing, and our short review will outline the pathways from the discovery of bioactive plants to the structural identification of active compounds, testing for potency, a

Rainforest hunter-gatherers from Southeast Asia are characterized by specific morphological features including a particularly dark skin color (D), short stature (S), woolly hair (W), and the presence of steatopygia (S)-fat accumulation localized in the hips (DSWS phenotype). Based on previous evidence in the Andamanese population, we first characterized signatures of adaptive natural selection around the calcium-sensing receptor gene in Southeast Asian rainforest groups presenting the DSWS phenotype and identified the R990G substitution (rs1042636) as a putative adaptive variant for experiment

Scrub typhus is recognised as an important differential diagnosis of fever, rash and sepsis in patients with a history of travel to Litchfield National Park in the Top End of the Northern Territory. All confirmed scrub typhus cases to date from the Northern Territory have visited the Park, but the presence of similar rainforest pockets elsewhere in the Top End suggested further infectious locations might be identified with increased tourism. We report a case of serologically confirmed Orientia tsutsugamushi infection in a man who had not been within Litchfield Park, but had visited another dis

A study of potentially zoonotic infections was carried out on 351 rodents trapped in north-eastern Queensland. Their ecosystems included towns, agricultural and livestock areas, wookland and rainforest. Nine serotypes of salmonellae were obtained from asymptomatic carries in predominantly settled locations. Two strains of Ps. pseudomallei occurred in rainforest near Innisfail and one on a cattle property adjacent to Townsville. Ps. aeruginosa caused bronchopneumonia in one animal from Townsville harbour. Ifection by leptospirae of six serogroups and seven serovars were identified by serologica

Aximopsis Ashmead, 1904 (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) is widely distributed across the Neotropics, with 14 of its 40 described species occurring in the region. Here, we describe and illustrate Aximopsis batistai sp. nov., a new parasitoid wasp species discovered in the Amazon rainforest. The new species is described based on a female specimen collected in Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Additionally, we report the first occurrence of Aximopsis masneri Gates, 2009 in the Brazilian Amazon, based on two female specimens collected at the same location. This finding extends the known distribution of A. masn

(1) Background: Although Brazilian indigenous communities of Rio de Janeiro State, southeastern Brazil, have been mostly located in conservation units and more likely exposed to ticks and tick-borne diseases, such environmental exposure remains to be fully established. Accordingly, this study aimed to detect Rickettsia spp. in ticks collected from dogs in all indigenous communities of Rio de Janeiro State. (2) Methods: After taxonomic identification, the total DNA was submitted to PCR amplification for DNA fragment (ITS-2 gene), gltA gene and the ompA gene to Rickettsia spp. identification. (3

This review study aimed to determine the relationship between exposure to smoke from biomass burning in the Amazon rain forest and its implications on human health in that region in Brazil. A nonsystematic review was carried out by searching PubMed, Google Scholar, SciELO, and EMBASE databases for articles published between 2005 and 2021, either in Portuguese or in English, using the search terms "biomass burning" OR "Amazon" OR "burned" AND "human health." The review showed that the negative health effects of exposure to smoke from biomass burning in the Amazon have been poorly studied in tha

We herein describe Acanthostomum yahuarcaquense Cajiao-Mora and Bullard n. sp. (Digenea: Cryptogonimidae) based on specimens we collected from the intestine of an aquatic coral snake, Micrurus surinamensis (Cuvier, 1817) (Serpentes: Elapidae) captured within the flooded rainforest habitat of the Yahuarcaca Lake System (Amazon River) Leticia, Amazonas, Colombia. We assign the new species to Acanthostomum Looss, 1899because it lacks a gonotyl and has an elongate body, spinose tegument, funnel-shaped oral sucker with circumoral spines, ceca each having a posterolateral and nearly terminal pore, a

This study reports results of a cross-sectional study based on interviews and seroepidemiological methods to identify risk factors for yellow fever infection among personnel of a military garrison in the Amazonian rainforest. Clinical symptoms and signs observed among yellow fever cases are also described. Humoral immune response to yellow fever, Mayaro, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, Oropouche, and dengue 2 infection was assessed by evaluating IgM and IgG specific antibodies. A yellow fever attack rate of 13% (44/341, with 3 fatal cases) was observed among military personnel. Signs of digest

BACKGROUND: Onchocerca volvulus, the causative agent of river blindness, is transmitted through the black fly Simulium damnosum s.l., which breeds in turbulent river waters. To date, the number of flies attacking humans has only been determined by standard fly collectors near the river or the village. In our study, we counted the actual number of attacking and successfully feeding S. damnosum s.l. flies landing on individual villagers during their routine day-time activities in two villages of the Sudan-savannah and rainforest of Cameroon. We compared these numbers to the number of flies caugh

Due to the rarity of bites and reported literature, the clinical manifestations of envenoming by species of Micrurus are poorly represented compared to envenomings by viperid species. A biologist was bitten on the hand by a specimen of Micrurus annellatus while removing a hammock from a drawstring bag in the Amazon rainforest of Peru. The subsequent evacuation, symptom progression, and recovery were recorded in detail by the victim and those involved in the evacuation. We report the details of this case, expand on the known symptoms resulting from a bite by M. annellatus, and review the associ

Understanding how studies have been carried out in the region helps to understand the Amazon rainforest potential in mitigating climate change. In addition, evaluating scientific production is essential to verify the main methods and places researched. Thus, this study objective was to build an overview and identify the main gaps regarding research related to biomass and carbon stocks with the coverage limit of the Amazon rainforest. Therefore, an analysis of the publications indexed in the Scopus database was developed until 2020, performing a bibliometric analysis and a systematic and state-

Four species of Korthalsia are found in Thailand: K. flagellaris, K. laciniosa, K. rigida, and K. scortechinii. We present the comparative vegetative morphology, a key to the species, distribution, ecology, preliminary conservation assessments, utilization, and specimens examined. Korthalsia flagellaris is lectotypified here in a second-step. Three Thai Korthalsia species are confined to the peninsular region: K. flagellaris, K. scortechinii and K. rigida. The first, K. flagellaris, is known only from Narathiwat province and is restricted to peat swamp forests. The second, K. scortechinii, is
