The pathogenesis of Rift Valley fever in adult rats from 3 inbred strains (LEW, MAXX, WF) was investigated. WF rats all died by day 2 postinoculation with viral tissue titers reaching 9 log10 PFU/g. LEW and MAXX rats were resistant to liver disease, but fatal necrotising encephalitis developed in 16 and 44% of the rats, respectively. Currently, several strains of rats are used for studies of peripheral-nerve injury and repair. Adjuvant arthritis (AA) is an experimental model of autoimmune arthritis that can be induced in susceptible strains of rats such as inbred Lewis upon immunization with CFA. AA cannot be induced in resistant strains like Brown-Norway or in Lewis rats after recovery from arthritis. We have previously shown that resistance to AA is due to the presence of natural as well as acquired anti-heat shock protein (HSP) Abs. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In humans, the insertion/deletion polymorphism in the angiotensin (Ang) I converting enzyme (ACE) gene significantly determines ACE activity. The deletion allele induces higher ACE levels and is associated with hypertension in men. In the rat, a microsatellite marker in the ACE gene allows differentiation of the ACE alleles among strains with different ACE levels. Streptobacillus moniliformis (Sm) was isolated from the middle ear of two inbred albino rats (strain CAP/Kuv) suffering from murine respiratory mycoplasmosis and purulent bilateral otitis media.
