Parasites of selected reptiles of the National Zoological Garden, Sri Lanka.

The National Zoological Garden plays a vital role in conservation of reptiles in Sri Lanka. Since parasitic infestations of captive reptiles can impact their health, a survey for intestinal parasites and ectoparasites was conducted on 19 selected reptilian species (14 snakes, four chelonians, and one crocodilian) housed at the National Zoological Garden, Sri Lanka. Of the reptiles screened, 62% (N = 139) were infected with parasites; 66% and 24% exclusively harbored intestinal and ecto parasites, respectively, while 10% carried both types of parasites. Three ticks (Ixodidae), two adult cestode

Conserved developmental algorithms during thalamocortical circuit formation in mammals and reptiles.

The general patterns of early thalamocortical development follow a similar sequence in all mammals. Thalamocortical projections descend through the ventral thalamus, advance in the internal capsule amongst cells which already possess dorsal thalamic projections, then reach the cerebral cortex by associating with subplate cells and their early corticofugal projections. Initially, the thalamic projections pause in the internal capsule and subplate layer. The interactions of the thalamocortical projections with the early generated, largely transient cells of the subplate, marginal zone, internal

Interconnections between the pretectum and visual thalamus in reptiles, Caiman crocodilus.

Interconnections between the visual thalamus and the pretectum were investigated in one species of reptiles, Caiman crocodilus, by injections of horseradish peroxidase into nucleus rotundus. Nucleus pretectalis was identified as a major target of rotundal efferents as well as a significant input to nucleus rotundus. The presence of a pretectal nucleus with neural connections and topographic location similar to nucleus pretectalis of Caiman has been described in lizards and pigeons. Taken together, these observations suggest that this pretectal nuclear group and its associated fiber path may be

DNA fingerprinting in reptiles: Bkm hybridization patterns in Crocodilia and Chelonia.

The simple tetranucleotide repeat GATA (GACA) occurs in all eukaryotes so far studied. In many species, the arrangement of these sequences varies considerably among individuals. Thus GATA (GACA) type probes produce DNA fingerprints when hybridized with restricted DNA from different individuals within a species. Banded krait minor (Bkm) satellite DNA (related to sequences originally recovered from the W chromosome of the banded krait and consisting essentially of a series of GATA repeats) is found in a wide spectrum of vertebrates and invertebrates. We used the Bkm 2(8) clone to evaluate the oc

Ascaridoid nematodes of amphibians and reptiles: Gedoelstascaris n.g. and Ortleppascaris n.g.

Two new genera, Gedoelstascaris and Orleppascaris, are proposed for species of ascaridoid nematodes occurring in crocodilians and previously included in Dujardinascaris. Species included in Gedoelstascaris are vandenbrandeni Baylis, 1929 as type species and australiensis Baylis, 1931 (= salomonis Kreis, 1940). These species occur in Crocodylus spp. in Africa and Australia respectively and are characterised by lips with a rostral plate, without interlocking processes or dentigerous ridges, with well-developed interlabia, lobulated ventriculus, and excetory pore in front of the nerve ring. Speci

Cranial osteology of Neotropical squamate reptiles of the genus Riama (Gymnophthalmidae: Cercosaurinae).

Cranial bones of squamate reptiles diverge in shape and structure across lineages, while preserving the basic skull plan. Therefore, variation in cranial morphology of squamates is key to understanding phylogenetic relationships, species delimitation, and lifestyles, which ultimately contribute to insights into their evolution and ecology. Nevertheless, although Gymnophthalmidae is the most diverse endemic non-ophidian squamate family in the Neotropics, studies on comparative cranial osteology within this lineage remain scarce. Herein, we thoroughly describe and compare the external skull anat

Rickettsial infection in ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) from reptiles in the Colombian Caribbean.

Although more reptiles are illegally traded in Colombia than any other group of animals, for both local and international markets, little is known about ticks associated with reptiles or pathogens associated with these ticks. In this study, ticks were collected from reptiles in Magdalena, Cesar and La Guajira regions in northern Colombia, and identified morphologically using taxonomic keys and molecularly by sequencing of the COI gene. In addition, Rickettsia spp. were detected by PCR amplifying the gltA, 16S rRNA, and sca1 genes. Ticks were identified as Amblyomma dissimile, representing the

The first case of genetically confirmed sparganosis (Spirometra erinaceieuropaei) in European reptiles.

Sparganosis is a zoonosis caused by the spargana (larvae) of Spirometra sp. (Diphyllobothriidae). Reptiles are particularly important vectors for the transmission of this parasite in Asia; however, their role in sparganosis spread in European wildlife is unrecognized. We investigated the infection of reptiles with Spirometra sp. in NE Poland, where several mammalian hosts have been identified recently and in the past. Of the 59 dead reptiles, plerocercoids were found in two grass snakes (Natrix natrix) from the Białowieża Primeval Forest (BPF). The Spirometra erinaceieuropaei species was genet

Effects of atrazine on fish, amphibians, and aquatic reptiles: a critical review.

The herbicide atrazine is widely used in agriculture for the production of corn and other crops. Because of its physical and chemical properties, atrazine is found in small concentrations in surface waters--habitats for some species. A number of reports on the effects of atrazine on aquatic vertebrates, mostly amphibians, have been published, yet there is inconsistency in the effects reported, and inconsistency between studies in different laboratories. We have brought the results and conclusions of all of the relevant laboratory and field studies together in this critical review and assessed

From fins to limbs to fins: limb evolution in fossil marine reptiles.

Limb osteology and ontogenetic patterns of limb ossification are reviewed for extinct lineages of aquatically adapted diapsid reptiles. Phylogenies including these fossil taxa show that paddle-like limbs were independently derived, and that the varied limb morphologies were produced by evolutionary modifications to different aspects of the limb skeleton. Ancient marine reptiles modify the limb by reducing the relative size of the epipodials, modifying the perichondral and periosteal surface of elements distal to the propodials, and evolving extremes of hyperphalangy and hyperdactyly. Mitigating the human link in emerging reptile fungal pathogen transmission.

Handling wild reptiles is common among amateur herpetology enthusiasts, professional researchers, social media influencers, and photographers. However, the potential for these interactions to spread diseases that threaten wild reptiles remains underappreciated. With the rise in such interactions due to today's socially connected landscape and the offering of an increased number of wildlife-focused ecotourism trips, the possibility of increased spread of human-vector-mediated reptile diseases is substantial. This spread is a concern, especially for novel and emerging potentially catastrophic fu

Evolution of vomerolfaction in squamate reptiles with a special emphasis on Lacerta agilis.

The naso-palatal complex of squamates incorporates developmentally associated structures and contains elements of the main and vomeronasal olfactory systems. These structures include the nasal cavity, vomeronasal organ (VNO), choanal groove, lacrimal duct, and the associated parts of the superficial palate. One of the most distinctive features of the squamate naso-palatal complex is the separation of the VNO from the nasal cavity. The VNO establishes a direct connection with the oral cavity, enabling tongue-mediated vomerolfaction. In all squamates, the rostral part of the lacrimal duct reache

Reptile-associated Salmonella urinary tract infection: a case report.

We present an 18-year-old woman with a urinary tract infection caused by Salmonella Oranienburg. S. Oranienburg was isolated from her pet snake and confirmed as the source of infection using whole genome sequencing. Our case demonstrates the risk of acquiring reptile-associated salmonellosis and stretches the need for awareness to prevent these infections.

Evaluation of the sequence method as a tool to assess spontaneous baroreflex in reptiles.

The sequence method is an alternative to the traditional pharmacological approach (i.e., the Oxford technique) used to calculate baroreflex gain (G) in mammals. Although the sequence method assesses baroreflex by measuring spontaneous events of blood pressure regulation, the pharmacological method relies on the injection of vasoactive drugs that impact the baroreflex mechanism itself. The sequence method might be relevant for dynamic measurement of baroreflex modulation but it was never validated for vertebrates with low heart rate. Hence, we tested the sequence method in three species of rept

Identification of hypocrealean reptile pathogenic isolates with MALDI-TOF MS.

Biotyper analysis of Nannizziopsis guarroi, a fatal fungal pathogen in lizards, was described recently. Hypocrealean fungal infections in captive reptiles appear with an increasing frequency during the last decade. Therefore, the aim of this study was to proof Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) as diagnostic tool for the identification of reptile pathogenic hypocrealean fungi. Ten fungal isolates obtained from nine reptiles with fungal glossitis, disseminated visceral mycosis, pneumomycosis, and fungal keratitis were analyzed. Phylogeny

Sleep in amphibians and reptiles: a review and a preliminary analysis of evolutionary patterns.

Despite the ubiquitous nature of sleep, its functions remain a mystery. In an attempt to address this, many researchers have studied behavioural and electrophysiological phenomena associated with sleep in a diversity of animals. The great majority of vertebrates and invertebrates display a phase of immobility that could be considered as a sort of sleep. Terrestrial mammals and birds, both homeotherms, show two sleep states with distinct behavioural and electrophysiological features. However, whether these features have evolved independently in each clade or were inherited from a common ancesto

Seasonal acclimatisation of muscle metabolic enzymes in a reptile (Alligator mississippiensis).

Reptiles living in heterogeneous thermal environments are often thought to show behavioural thermoregulation or to become inactive when environmental conditions prevent the achievement of preferred body temperatures. By contrast, thermally homogeneous environments preclude behavioural thermoregulation, and ectotherms inhabiting these environments (particularly fish in which branchial respiration requires body temperature to follow water temperature) modify their biochemical capacities in response to long-term seasonal temperature fluctuations. Reptiles may also be active at seasonally varying
