OBJECTIVE: Circulating lipids are linked with insulin resistance and increased cardiovascular disease risk. We previously reported that dihydroceramides, a specific type of sphingolipid, are elevated in insulin-resistant individuals; however, little is known regarding whether insulin-sensitizing lifestyle interventions can improve profiles of sphingolipids and other lipid species.
METHODS: A total of 21 individuals with obesity participated in a 3-month lifestyle intervention of combined weight loss and exercise training. Insulin sensitivity was assessed by hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps,

Studies have demonstrated the negative impact that work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) have on surgeons. These are also likely to affect some allied healthcare professionals such as interventional radiologists. Problems from WMSDs include pain, diminished technical and cognitive performance, and work absence. These could contribute to burnout, to which surgeons are already vulnerable owing to other working practices such as shift patterns and long hours. WMSDs could negatively affect working performance, and lead to poorer surgical outcomes and patient care. Surgeons are at risk of

Leucine supplementation and resistance training positively influence the protein translation process and the cell signaling mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) pathway that regulates muscle protein balance and muscle remodeling, and thus may be therapeutic to diabetic myopathy. However, the effect of a combined intervention has not been well studied. Forty male Wistar rats were divided into five groups, control (C), diabetic control (D), diabetic + trained (DT), diabetic + L-leucine (DL), diabetic + L-leucine + trained (DLT). The supplementation of 5% leucine in chow, and resistance training

Exercise is considered to be an effective supportive treatment approach in breast cancer (BC) patients. We conducted a randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of a 12-week PRT during radiotherapy. Strength performance was assessed by maximal isokinetic peak torque (MIPT) in two different angular velocities (60°/s and 180°/s) and maximal voluntary isometric contraction for shoulder external and internal rotation, as well as for knee extension and flexion were assessed pre- and post-intervention in 146 patients randomized to PRT or a control group. Statistical analyses were based on a

It has been reported that exercise under hypoxic conditions elevates acute growth hormone secretion after exercise compared with that under normoxic conditions. This study examined the influence of resistance training under moderate hypoxic conditions on muscle thickness, strength and hormonal responses. Thirteen healthy men were assigned into two groups matched for physical fitness level and then randomized into two groups that performed exercise under normoxic (FiO2 = 20·9%) or hypoxic (FiO2 = 12·7%) conditions. Three sets of elbow extensions with unilateral arm were performed to exhaustio

PGC-1α is a transcriptional coactivator induced by exercise that gives muscle many of the best known adaptations to endurance-type exercise but has no effects on muscle strength or hypertrophy. We have identified a form of PGC-1α (PGC-1α4) that results from alternative promoter usage and splicing of the primary transcript. PGC-1α4 is highly expressed in exercised muscle but does not regulate most known PGC-1α targets such as the mitochondrial OXPHOS genes. Rather, it specifically induces IGF1 and represses myostatin, and expression of PGC-1α4 in vitro and in vivo induces robust skeletal muscle

Resistance or strength exercise training may help reverse the malnutrition common among patients in chronic renal failure and delay the progression of renal disease. Resistance training is characterized by resisting, lifting, and lowering weights. It results in muscle mass accretion, improved physical function, and slowed progression of muscle wasting. Resistance exercise training for a period of 8 to 12 weeks results in significant increases in muscle mass, muscle strength, and muscle function in frail "Работает" elderly individuals as well as in specific patient populations. States of malnutr

This study compared calf training with initial partial repetitions versus full range-of-motion (ROM) repetitions followed by past-failure partials on gastrocnemius hypertrophy. Twenty-three participants (men: n = 16 and women: n = 7) performed four sets of unilateral Smith machine calf raises to momentary failure twice a week for 8 weeks. One leg was trained using initial partials to their individualized maximum dorsiflexion ROM. The contralateral leg was trained with a full ROM and continued with past-failure partials after failure in peak plantarflexion. Medial gastrocnemius muscle thickness

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated whether velocity-based resistance training provides additional benefits to lower limb performance compared to standard exercise execution.
METHODS: Twenty untrained adult women (37-55 years) were randomly assigned to two resistance training groups to perform resistance training with three sets of four lower body exercises per week for 6 weeks. The number of repetitions and lifting velocity differed between the groups. One group performed lower body exercises with maximal intent and a 10% velocity loss threshold termination (VB10%; n = 10), while the other

The absence of clear evidence regarding the long-term comparative effectiveness of structured aerobic versus resistance training in improving lipid profile and metabolic parameters in type 2 diabetes mellitus remains a significant clinical challenge. Hence, this randomized controlled trial evaluated 60 patients with T2DM assigned to aerobic or resistance training groups over an extended follow-up period. Both interventions demonstrated improvements in glycaemic control, lipid profile, cardiovascular parameters and behavioral outcomes, with resistance training showing superior early-phase benef
