Exploring machine learning insights into long-acting reversible family planning usage in Ethiopia: analysis of the PMA 2023 dataset.

INTRODUCTION: Ethiopia faces challenges in Long-Acting Reversible Family Planning (LARFP) adoption despite its efficacy. Traditional statistical methods have a limited capacity to capture nonlinear determinants. This study leverages machine learning (ML) to identify predictors of LARFP use using the 2021–2023 Performance Monitoring for Action (PMA) Ethiopia dataset. METHODS: Twenty-four predictors across geographic, socioeconomic, healthcare access, and behavioral domains were analyzed using seven machine learning models evaluated via stratified 5-fold cross-validation. RESULTS: Decision Tree

Assistant experience enhances the learning curve in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty: a comparative cumulative sum analysis of 3 surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) is an established treatment for cuff tear arthropathy, irreparable rotator cuff tears, and advanced glenohumeral osteoarthritis. However, despite advances in implant design and preoperative planning, rTSA remains technically demanding during early experience, and the influence of assistant experience on learning curves is unclear. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated the early learning curves of 3 shoulder surgeons (Surgeons A-C), each assessed over their first 60 consecutive rTSA cases. All surgeons shared similar subspecialty tra

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) on the second postpartum day: learning experience from a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is an uncommon neurological disorder which is characterised by variable symptoms. The transient clinical condition may be underestimated and misdiagnosed as other conditions, especially, among pregnant women with severe preeclampsia, eclampsia, and HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets) syndrome in the puerperium. We hereby contribute to the literature this rare complication and hightlight the appropriate management of PRES . PRESENTATION CASE: A pregnant woman (gravida 3, parity 2) had a normal antenatal co

Effect of rapamycin on reversing post-ictal impairments in trace fear learning following a single brief convulsive seizure in rats.

The postictal period, which immediately follows a seizure, is associated with several incapacitating symptoms or signs, such as psychosis, confusion, paresis, aphasia and memory loss. These symptoms can last from several minutes to even days and can have a negative impact on the quality of life for people living with epilepsy. However, there is a scarcity of data concerning the neurobiological mechanisms that mediate postictal amnesia and behavioural impairments. In the present study, we examined the impact of a single brief, self-limiting convulsive seizure induced by the chemoconvulsant pent

Machine learning and molecular simulation-based protocols to identify novel potential inhibitors for reverse transcriptase against HIV infections.

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a potentially fatal condition affecting the human immune system, which is attributed to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The suppression of reverse transcriptase activity is a promising and feasible strategy for the therapeutic management of AIDS. In this study, we employed machine learning algorithms, such as support vector machines (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (k-NN), random forest (RF), and Gaussian naive base (GNB), which are fast and effective tools commonly used in drug design. For model training, we initially obtained a dataset of 5,159 c

Multiple injections of thyrotropin releasing hormone fail to reverse learning and memory deficits in rats with lesions of the nucleus basalis of meynert.

The learning and memory enhancing effects of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) was examined in an animal model of Alzheimer's disease. Adult rats were prepared with either sham surgeries or cholinergic lesions of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (nbM). Subjects were injected (ip) with one of three doses of TRH (0, 5, 10 mg/kg) starting on the day of surgery and continuing once every other day for a total of four injections. Performance (four trials/day for 4 days, 30 m inter-trial interval) in a Morris water maze was assessed one week after the last TRH injection (i.e., 2 weeks postoperatively

Forced use of hemiplegic upper extremities to reverse the effect of learned nonuse among chronic stroke and head-injured patients.

To test the clinical counterpart of the learned nonuse theory, 25 chronic hemiplegic stroke and head-injured patients with minimal to moderate upper extremity extensor muscle function were required to keep their uninvolved upper extremities within a hand-enclosed sling during waking hours over a 2-week interval. During this forced use period and for 1 year thereafter, changes in force or time-based measures among 21 functional tasks were compared to values at the sixth baseline session, a preintervention time when relearning had plateaued. Perseveration in a spatial-discrimination serial reversal learning task is differentially affected by MAO-A and MAO-B inhibition and associated with reduced anxiety and peripheral serotonin levels.

RATIONALE: Impairments in behavioral flexibility lie at the core of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Few studies, however, have investigated the neural substrates of natural variation in behavioral flexibility and whether inflexible behavior is linked to anxiety and peripheral markers of stress and monoamine function. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate peripheral and central markers associated with perseverative behavior on a spatial-discrimination serial reversal learning task. METHODS: Rats were trained on a reversal learning task prior to blood sampling, a

Explainable deep learning model WAL-net for individualised assessment of potentially reversible malnutrition in patients with cancer: a multicentre cohort study.

Persistent malnutrition is associated with poor clinical outcomes in cancer. However, assessing its reversibility can be challenging. The present study aimed to utilise machine learning (ML) to predict reversible malnutrition (RM) in patients with cancer. A multicentre cohort study including hospitalised oncology patients. Malnutrition was diagnosed using an international consensus. RM was defined as a positive diagnosis of malnutrition upon patient admission which turned negative one month later. Time-series data on body weight and skeletal muscle were modelled using a long short-term memory

Deep learning for optoacoustic imaging of reversibly switchable proteins: training and performance testing using simulated multispectral optoacoustic tomography images.

SIGNIFICANCE: Reversibly switchable optoacoustic proteins (rsOAPs) are a promising candidate for sensitive and quantitative optoacoustic (OA) imaging of genetically modified cell populations, such as chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cells used in cancer immunotherapy. Although detection of rsOAPs has been demonstrated using classical machine learning approaches, there is still a need for higher detection sensitivity and more accurate quantification. AIM: We aim to develop deep learning approaches for improving the sensitivity of the detection and accuracy of quantification of rsOAPs with OA

Anti-HIV Potential of Origanum vulgare Compounds Targeting Viral Reverse Transcriptase with High Binding and Stability Validated by Machine Learning.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is one of the viruses that has co-evolved within human populations for a considerable time. With the evolution of new drug-resistant HIV strains, the necessity to discover novel drugs has become an issue of great concern, especially those that have increased binding affinities and inhibitory activity towards RT enzymes. This study used an in silico approach to identify potential HIV-RT inhibitory candidates from Origanum vulgare (oregano). An initial in silico screening of approximately 820 compounds was conducted, and based on molecular docking-derived bindi

Roseburia intestinalis Supplementation Could Reverse the Learning and Memory Impairment and m6A Methylation Modification Decrease Caused by 27-Hydroxycholesterol in Mice.

The abnormality in N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation is involved in the course of Alzheimer's disease (AD), while the intervention of 27-Hydroxycholesterol (27-OHC) can affect the m6A methylation modification in the brain cortex. Disordered gut microbiota is a key link in 27-OHC leading to cognitive impairment, and further studies have found that the abundance of Roseburia intestinalis in the gut is significantly reduced under the intervention of 27-OHC. This study aims to investigate the association of 27-OHC, Roseburia intestinalis in the gut, and brain m6A modification in the learning an

Selective activation of M4 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors reverses MK-801-induced behavioral impairments and enhances associative learning in rodents.

Positive allosteric modulators (PAMs) of the M4 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) represent a novel approach for the treatment of psychotic symptoms associated with schizophrenia and other neuropsychiatric disorders. We recently reported that the selective M4 PAM VU0152100 produced an antipsychotic drug-like profile in rodents after amphetamine challenge. Previous studies suggest that enhanced cholinergic activity may also improve cognitive function and reverse deficits observed with reduced signaling through the N-methyl-d-aspartate subtype of the glutamate receptor (NMDAR) in the cen

Lurasidone reverses MK-801-induced impairment of learning and memory in the Morris water maze and radial-arm maze tests in rats.

We have previously shown that lurasidone, a novel atypical antipsychotic, potently reverses learning impairment induced by the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist MK-801 in the rat passive avoidance test. However, the effects of lurasidone in other learning and memory tasks remain to be investigated. We investigated the effects of lurasidone and other marketed antipsychotics (risperidone, clozapine, aripiprazole, and haloperidol) on MK-801-induced impairment of learning and memory in the Morris water maze (MWM) and radial-arm maze (RAM) tests in rats. Effects of prenatal ethanol and long-chain n-3 fatty acid supplementation on development in mice. 1. Body and brain growth, sensorimotor development, and water T-maze reversal learning.

Pregnant mice were fed equivalent daily amounts of a liquid diet containing 25% (kcal) ethanol, or with maltose dextrin substituted isocalorically for ethanol. In addition, the diet contained 20% oil; this was either of two mixtures, one comprised of predominantly n-6 (18:2n-6) fatty acids, and the other containing an equivalent amount of n-6, but supplemented with a source of long chain n-3 (20:5n-3, 22:6n-3) fatty acids. An additional control group was fed lab chow ad libitum. The treatment was implemented from day 7 to 17 of gestation, whereafter all groups were fed lab chow. Ethanol decrea

A mild impairment in reversal learning in a bowl-digging substrate deterministic task but not other cognitive tests in the Dlg2+/- rat model of genetic risk for psychiatric disorder.

Variations in the Dlg2 gene have been linked to increased risk for psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disability, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and pubertal disorders. Recent studies have reported disrupted brain circuit function and behaviour in models of Dlg2 knockout and haploinsufficiency. Specifically, deficits in hippocampal synaptic plasticity were found in heterozygous Dlg2+/- rats suggesting impacts on hippocampal dependent learning and cognitive flexibility. Here, we tested these predicted effects with

Effects of risperidone, clozapine and the 5-HT6 antagonist GSK-742457 on PCP-induced deficits in reversal learning in the two-lever operant task in male Sprague Dawley rats.

Reasoning and problem solving deficits have been reported in schizophrenic patients. In the present study, we have tested rats in a two-lever reversal learning task in a Skinner box to model these deficits. In other studies using the Skinner box, atypical antipsychotics fully reversed phencyclidine (PCP)-induced impairments in reversal learning which is in contrast to clinical observations where antipsychotics lack the ability to fully reverse cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. Therefore, it can be argued that the outcome of these tests may lack predictive value. In the present study, after

Timing in the absence of supraspinal input III: regularly spaced cutaneous stimulation prevents and reverses the spinal learning deficit produced by peripheral inflammation.

In the absence of brain input, spinal systems can adapt to new environmental relations. For example, spinally transected rats given a legshock each time the leg is extended exhibit a progressive increase in flexion duration that minimizes net shock exposure, a simple form of instrumental learning. This capacity for learning is modulated by prior stimulation; both variable shock and inflammation produce a lasting inhibition of learning. An extended exposure to fixed spaced shock has no adverse effect on learning and opposes the consequences of variable shock. The present studies expand on these
