Estimating macrolide antibiotics use in a typical region of Taihu Lake Basin, China through wastewater-based epidemiology.

Numerous macrolide antibiotics (MLs) have been widely utilized in the fields of disease treatment, aquaculture, and livestock industry. These antibiotics are metabolized in the human body and subsequently enter wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) through domestic wastewater. However, residues may enter natural water bodies, potentially exerting adverse effects on human health. This highlights necessity of understanding antibiotic usage patterns in proximity to water supply sources. Taihu Lake, a significant freshwater reservoir in China, is currently facing a serious issue of antibiotic pollut

In vitro activity of telithromycin (HMR3647), a new ketolide, against clinical isolates of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in Japan.

The in vitro activity of telithromycin (HMR3647), a new ketolide, against Mycoplasma pneumoniae was determined by the broth microdilution test using 41 clinical isolates obtained in Japan, as compared with those of five macrolides (erythromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin, azithromycin, and josamycin), minocycline, and levofloxacin. Telithromycin was less potent than azithromycin, but it was more active than four other macrolides, minocycline, and levofloxacin; its MICs at which 50 and 90% of the isolates tested were inhibited were both 0.00097 microg/ml, justifying clinical studies to dete

Antibiotic resistance of lactic acid bacteria isolated from Chinese yogurts.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the susceptibility of 43 strains of lactic acid bacteria, isolated from Chinese yogurts made in different geographical areas, to 11 antibiotics (ampicillin, penicillin G, roxithromycin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, chlortetracycline, lincomycin, kanamycin, streptomycin, neomycin, and gentamycin). The 43 isolates (18 Lactobacillus bulgaricus and 25 Streptococcus thermophilus) were identified at species level and were typed by random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis. Thirty-five genotypically different strains were detected and their antimicrobial resist

Azithromycin suppresses proliferation, interleukin production and mitogen-activated protein kinases in human peripheral-blood mononuclear cells stimulated with bacterial superantigen.

OBJECTIVES: Macrolide antibiotics are used for the treatment of immunological disorders such as psoriasis. However, few studies have investigated the immunoregulatory efficacy of macrolides in bacterial superantigen-stimulated immune cells. METHODS: The suppressive efficacies of azithromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin and prednisolone were evaluated in vitro against the concanavalin A- or toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1)-induced proliferation of peripheral-blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from nine healthy subjects. The concentrations of six cytokines in a PBMC-culture medium

Exploring antibiotic consumption between urban and sub-urban catchments using both parent drugs and related metabolites in wastewater-based epidemiology.

Consumption of antibiotics leads to the dissemination of antimicrobial resistance worldwide. Better knowledge of temporal and spatial consumption of antibiotics helps public health authorities to control their usage and combat antimicrobial resistance. However, measuring antibiotic consumption with population surveys, sales data, and production statistics remains challenging due to the complexity of prescription preference, patient compliance, and direct disposal of unused drugs. With the approach of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), this study aims to evaluate the consumption of eight comm

Does exposure timing of macrolide antibiotics affect the development of river periphyton? Insights into the structure and function.

Discharged sewage is the dominant source of urban river pollution. Macrolide antibiotics have emerged as prominent contaminants, which are frequently detected in sewage and rivers and pose a threat to aquatic microbial community. As a typical primary producer, periphyton is crucial for maintaining the biodiversity and functions of aquatic ecosystem. However, effects of antibiotic exposure time as well as the recovery process of periphyton remain undetermined. In the present study, five exposure scenarios of two typical macrolides, erythromycin (ERY) and roxithromycin (ROX) were investigated at

Reversible anosmia after amikacin therapy.

Olfactory disorders are among the rare adverse effects of antibiotic therapy. To date, olfactory losses or distortions have been reported after the use of doxycycline, amoxicillin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin, kanamycin sulfate, and streptomycin sulfate. We describe what we believe to be the first case of transient anosmia associated with the use of intravenous amikacin sulfate. The appearance of the disorder and its subsequent resolution were demonstrated by psychometric testing as well as by chemosensory evoked potentials. Based on the well-documented temporal course of the anosmia, there

Occurrence of antibacterials, antivirals, and anti-inflammatory pharmaceuticals for COVID-19 treatment as emerging contaminants in the Chinese freshwater environment before, during and after the pandemic: the need for dynamic eco-pharmacovigilance.

BACKGROUND: Global epidemic diseases such as COVID-19 have driven both the excessive use of pharmaceuticals and shifts in their usage spectrum. Consequently, the profile of pharmaceuticals in the environment (PiE) may undergo dynamic temporal changes, posing a significant challenge to eco-pharmacovigilance (EPV), a specialized branch of pharmacovigilance focused on detecting, evaluating, understanding, and preventing the adverse environmental effects of pharmaceuticals. METHODS: Based on data extracted from 89 studies published between 2014 and 2025, this review conducts a focused comparison

Spatiotemporal distribution of the planktonic microbiome and antibiotic resistance genes in a typical urban river contaminated by macrolide antibiotics.

The widespread application of macrolide antibiotics has caused antibiotic resistance pollution, threatening the river ecological health. In this study, five macrolide antibiotics (azithromycin, clarithromycin, roxithromycin, erythromycin, and anhydro erythromycin A) were monitored in the Zao River across three hydrological periods (April, July, and December). Simultaneously, the changes in antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and planktonic bacterial communities were determined using metagenomic sequencing. A clear pollution gradient was observed for azithromycin

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in the water sources of the Wuhan stretch of the Yangtze River: Occurrence, distribution, and ecological risks.

Given the ubiquitous detection of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in waterbodies worldwide and increasing public attention to water resource safety, this study investigated the presence of antibiotics and ARGs in the water sources of the Wuhan stretch of the Yangtze River (YR) as well as potential ecological risks. In this study, 15 antibiotics and 10 ARGs in a source of drinking water were analyzed using solid-phase extraction-ultra performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technology (SPE-UPLC-MS/MS) and real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reacti

Microbiome-related metabolite changes in gut tissue, cecum content and feces of rats treated with antibiotics.

The metabolic functionality of the gut microbiota contributes to the metabolism and well-being of its host, although detailed insight in the microbiota's metabolism is lacking. Omics technologies could facilitate unraveling metabolism by the gut microbiota. In this study, we performed metabolite profiling of different matrices of the gut, after antibiotic treatment of rats in order to evaluate metabolite changes observed at different dose levels and in different sexes, and to identify the best tissue matrix for further investigations regarding an assessment of metabolic effects of new compound

Does macrolide use confer risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest compared with penicillin V? A Danish national case-crossover and case-time-control study.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Macrolides have been associated with proarrhythmic properties, but the evidence is conflicting. We evaluated the risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) associated with specific macrolides in a retrospective study. Associations between specific macrolides and OHCA were examined by conditional logistic regression analyses in case-crossover and case-time-control models, using penicillin-V treatment as the comparative reference. From nationwide registries, we identified all OHCAs in Denmark from 2001 to 2010 and use of antibiotics. ETHICS: The present study was

Lichen Planopilaris Arising between Two Linear Surgical Scars.

Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is a type of lymphocytic cicatricial alopecia, which can occur at unusual sites. It can be difficult to diagnose at an early stage and may be misdiagnosed as seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis in early stages before alopecia occurs. We report a rare case in which alopecia occurred between two long surgical scars on the scalp several years after surgery. Dermoscopy and biopsy led to a diagnosis of LPP. The localization of the lesions in our case suggests that oxidative stress from the failure of lymph flow might have induced LPP. Oral roxithromycin, a macrolide antibio

The safety of azithromycin in the treatment of adults with community-acquired respiratory tract infections.

The comparative safety of azithromycin was assessed in adult patients (> or =12 years) with community-acquired respiratory tract infections. Of 3229 patients evaluated, 1616 received azithromycin 500 mg once daily for 3 days and 1613 received standard regimens of amoxycillin, amoxycillin/clavulanic acid, cefaclor, clarithromycin, or roxithromycin. A similar incidence of treatment-related adverse events occurred with azithromycin (10.3%) and comparators (11.5%). Significantly fewer patients were withdrawn from azithromycin than comparator treatment (0.4 versus 2.1%; P=0.0001). Most adverse even
