INTRODUCTION: Ewing sarcoma most commonly arises in bones but rarely presents in extraskeletal locations. We report one such case arising from the jejunum.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old woman presented with acute-onset, right lower quadrant pain. Computed tomography results showed a large mass within the midjejunum with pneumoperitoneum. Surgical excision was performed, and an extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma of the jejunum was suspected histologically. The diagnosis was confirmed with fluorescence in situ hybridization studies.
CONCLUSION: This case emphasizes the importance of recognizing th

Ewing sarcoma is the second most prevalent primary malignant bone tumor. Metastases from Ewing sarcoma to the heart are very rare. Herein, we present a case of undiagnosed Ewing sarcoma in a 12-year-old boy who presented with metastasis to the left atrium. The mass was prolapsing across the mitral valve. In view of the potential risk of embolization, urgent cardiac surgery was performed before the establishment of a definitive diagnosis. Histopathology was consistent with Ewing sarcoma. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass in his left fibula. The patient was referred to the on

We report here on a case of Ewing sarcoma (ES) occurring in a child with neurofibromatosis type 1. The sarcoma had an EWSR1-ERG translocation as well as loss of the remaining wild-type allele of NF1. Loss of the NF1 wild-type allele in the tumor suggests that activation of the Ras pathway contributed to its evolution. Review of available public data suggests that secondary mutations in the Ras pathway are found in ∼3% of ESs. This case suggests that Ras pathway activation may play a role in tumor progression in a subset of ESs.

INTRODUCTION: Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the sinonasal tract and associated primitive neuroectodermal tumors are rare. To our knowledge, only 10 case reports of sinonasal ES of the nose or paranasal sinuses have been reported. Furthermore, there has been only 1 case of sinonasal ES arising from the middle turbinate. Recommended management of sinonasal ES stems from the management of its osseous counterpart, ES, but treatment with surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy is varied. Five-year survival rates vary from 21% to 70%, with the lower rates representing patients presenting with metastatic dis

Ewing sarcoma is a highly aggressive small round cell malignant neoplasm of bone and soft tissue that typically is manifested in children and young adults. It is most commonly a primary bone tumor; however, extraosseous cases have been increasingly reported. We report a case of metastatic extraosseous Ewing sarcoma with the primary lesion occurring within a limb affected by primary lymphedema. Lymphedema, in this case, played a role not only in the genesis of the tumor because of the relative local immunosuppression but also in masking the development of the lower limb mass.

Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) is a tumor of small round cells arising in skeletal tissues. These tumors rarely arise in the stomach. We present a 31-year-old healthy female patient who was admitted to our surgical ward due to upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Upper endoscopy revealed a large ulcerated bleeding mass originating from the lesser curvature. Biopsy revealed tumor cell immunoreactivity positive for CD99, vimentin, and Ki67 (an index of proliferation). These findings were compatible with gastric ES/PNET. The fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis resul

Ewing sarcoma, a highly malignant neoplasm of the bone, usually occurs during childhood. About 15% are extraosseous. The Ewing family of tumors (EFTs) are extremely rare in the vagina. A 40-year literature review from 1970 to 2010 revealed only nine cases. A 32-year-old woman presented with a painless vaginal mass. A wide excision was performed. Histopathology, immunohistochemistry and molecular studies confirmed extraosseous vaginal Ewing sarcoma. Despite aggressive chemotherapy with a good initial response, she developed local recurrence and metastasis to the spine and pelvis and succumbed 2

To develop a practical immunohistochemistry panel for distinguishing lymphoblastic lymphoma from Ewing sarcoma (ES), we evaluated 17 ES and 27 lymphoblastic lymphoma and leukemia cases with antibodies to CD99, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT), leukocyte common antigen (LCA), CD43, CD79a, CD20, CD3, vimentin, and neuron-specific enolase (NSE). Three cases were bone lymphomas, 2 initially misdiagnosed as ES. All cases were CD99+. All lymphomas and leukemias were TdT+ compared to none of the ESs. None of the ESs expressed other lymphocytic markers, which were inconsistently expressed i

A high suspicion for relapsed metastatic disease must arise when an intracardiac mass is detected in a patient with a recent history of Ewing sarcoma. Nevertheless, the scenario may eventually turn out to be much more complex than expected, and the possibility that the intracardiac tumor may instead be a "second" primary sarcoma, although extremely rare, should also be considered. We describe the first case of concomitant diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma and low-grade myxoid spindle cell sarcoma in the same young patient.

CRISPR-based technologies have transformed experimental biology by enabling precise, efficient, and programmable manipulation of the genome and epigenome. This chapter provides a comprehensive and practical guide to genetic and epigenetic editing using CRISPR technology, with a particular focus on applications in Ewing sarcoma cell models. We describe strategies for CRISPR-mediated gene knockout (CRISPR KO) via nonhomologous end joining (NHEJ), precise gene knock-in (CRISPR KI) through homology-directed repair (HDR), and reversible transcriptional modulation using CRISPR interference (CRISPRi)

Ewing sarcoma is an aggressive neoplasm that is common among children and adolescents, most frequently affecting the pelvis and long bones. Although rare, Ewing sarcoma is known to also occur in extraosseous locations, affecting a broad range of soft tissue structures. The diagnosis of extraosseous Ewing sarcoma is difficult given the nonspecific symptomatology, often related to local tumor burden. Radiological features of this entity overlap with other common malignancies, as Ewing sarcoma typically presents on computed tomography (CT) as a heterogeneous mass containing areas of necrosis and

Ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) syndrome (EAS) accounts for 8-18% of Cushing syndrome cases and is typically due to neuroendocrine tumors such as small cell lung carcinoma and bronchopulmonary neuroendocrine tumors. EAS arising from Ewing sarcoma (EwS) is rare, with only 9 pediatric and 5 adult cases reported to date. We present the case of a 40-year-old woman with refractory, metastatic EwS who developed progressive swelling, fatigue, hypokalemia, profound proximal muscle weakness, and intermittent confusion over 2 months. Physical examination revealed facial plethora, supraclavicu

Ewing sarcoma is a malignancy belonging to the group of small round blue cell neoplasms. Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma is a very rare malignancy, and very few reports on this topic exist. Bone tumors are most commonly described in the 2nd and 3rd decades of life, and occur predominantly in males. The age of onset for extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma is reportedly greater. We present the case of a 3-year-old girl diagnosed with primary pulmonary Ewing sarcoma with metastasis to the contralateral lung. To our knowledge, there are no reported cases at this age.

Ewing sarcoma (EWS) is the second most common primary malignant bone and soft tissue tumor. Relapsed EWS is difficult to treat, with poor long-term survival. Isolated lung relapse occurs in about a third of relapsed patients, and there is no standard of care. We aim to review the available literature with the goal of providing guidance for the management of isolated pulmonary relapsed EWS using the 2 major types of pulmonary-directed radiation: whole lung irradiation (WLI) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). PubMed and Web of Science were reviewed for studies that evaluated patient

Primary intradural extramedullary Ewing sarcoma (PIEES) is a very rare and aggressive tumor with poorly recognized radiologic features. In this case series, we present our institutional experience with PIEES with emphasis on imaging and temporal evolution of the disease. In total, 8 patients with pathologic diagnosis of PIEES were included in this study. All patients were symptomatic at time of presentation. MRI findings demonstrated T1 isointense, T2 slightly hyperintense, and homogeneously enhancing lesion in all cases with spinal cord edema/cord compression or cauda equina nerve root compre

Primary Ewing sarcoma of the kidney (ESK) is a rare and aggressive malignancy often misdiagnosed as renal cell carcinoma (RCC) due to non-specific radiological features. Accurate diagnosis requires histology, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and molecular studies. We report the case of a female in her 20s presenting with abdominal pain, haematuria and weight loss, initially diagnosed with RCC. Imaging revealed a large renal mass and pulmonary embolus. Mechanical thrombectomy (MT) was performed, and biopsy of the pulmonary thrombus confirmed metastatic ESK through IHC and next-generation sequencing,
