Comparative study between intrathecal dexmedetomidine and intrathecal magnesium sulfate for the prevention of post-spinal anaesthesia shivering in uroscopic surgery; (RCT).

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia and shivering are common complications after spinal anaesthesia, especially after uroscopic procedures in which large amounts of cold intraluminal irrigation fluids are used. Magnesium sulfate and dexmedetomidine are the most effective adjuvants with the least side effects. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of intrathecal dexmedetomidine versus intrathecal magnesium sulfate on the prevention of post-spinal anaesthesia shivering. METHODS: This prospective randomized, double-blinded controlled study included 105 patients who were scheduled for uroscopic su

Warming strategies for preventing hypothermia and shivering during cesarean section: A systematic review with network meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Hypothermia and shivering are undesirable morbidities that occur commonly during cesarean section. Although some active warming strategies, such as the use of forced-air, mattresses, and fluid warming, can attenuate such adverse events, no studies have yet performed multiple contrast assessments of these strategies. We, therefore, conducted a network meta-analysis to simultaneously assess the effects of various warming strategies for cesarean section and assist clinicians in making informed decisions. METHODS: We searched databases for randomized clinical trials that investigated

The Use of Neuromuscular Blockers to Prevent Shivering in the Setting of Postcardiac Arrest Targeted Temperature Management: A Narrative Review of an Off-Label Indication.

Targeted temperature management (TTM) has become a standard of care over the past two decades for the improvement in neurologic function and mortality in postcardiac arrest patients. There are various mechanisms by which hypothermia helps to improve these outcomes, one of which is by reducing oxygen requirements. Less established is the use of nondepolarizing neuromuscular blockers (NMBs) to prevent shivering during TTM. Shivering can be disadvantageous in this setting as it increases oxygen requirements, which TTM is actively trying to decrease, in an already oxygen-deprived system as well as

The Effect of Intraoperative Forced Air Warmer Use on Postoperative Nausea, Vomiting, and Shivering Among Laparoscopic Surgery Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background Unintended perioperative hypothermia is a frequent side effect of general anesthesia and is related to early postoperative symptoms such as shivering and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Forced air warming (FAW), as performed with the Bair Hugger system, is commonly used during long procedures for the maintenance of normothermia. However, its effectiveness in reducing these postoperative symptoms in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery remains uncertain. Methods This single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, between

The effect of ketamine versus tramadol on prophylactic post-spinal shivering in those patients undergoing orthopedic surgery: a prospective cohort study design, 2020.

BACKGROUND: Post-spinal shivering is a common complication after spinal anesthesia with a high incidence among orthopedic patients. Untreated shivering may predispose to exacerbation of wound pain, increased metabolic demand, oxygen consumption, and hemostatic dysfunction. Various studies have been done on the effectiveness of preventing post-spinal shivering using ketamine and other drugs. However, little information on better prophylactic agents in terms of effectiveness and availability. Therefore, this study was intended to compare 0.25 mg/kg of Ketamine (K) versus 0.5 mg/kg of Tramadol (T
