BACKGROUND: Juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) is a rare, recurrent non-obstructive, nonsuppurative parotid inflammation in young children with a multifactorial etiology.
METHODS: The records of 12 children with recurrent parotitis were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: The age of onset ranged from 3 to 8 years (mean, 5.1 years). Each attack lasted an average of 3.5 days. The major clinical manifestations included fever (75%), swelling (100%), and pain (100%). One girl also had xerostomia and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Her biopsy specimen from a minor salivary gland was consistent with juv

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic inflammatory disease with an autoimmune etiology, that affects exocrine glands, in particular salivary and lacrimal glands. Among the diagnostic criteria of SS, imaging techniques play an important role. The aim of our study is to compare three imaging techniques, such as sonography, scintigraphy and sialography in the evaluation of major salivary glands. The use of the these techniques is of great importance for the diagnosis of SS. Sonography is the most frequently used for its prompt execution, non invasivity, great acceptance by the patient and low cost

This paper reviews the examination technique, normal findings, and pathological findings in conventional radiographic diagnosis of the salivary glands. The clinical importance of plain radiographs and sialography today despite the availability of modern imaging modalities is discussed. Of the ultrasound equipment is adequate and the examiner has enough experience in small-parts ultrasonography, application of conventional X-ray methods should be limited to confirmation of ultrasonographic suspicion of sialolithiasis or tumor-erosion of adjacent bone, especially the mandible (plain films), furt

A rare case of a 9-year-old female with mucoepidermoid carcinoma arising in the accessory parotid gland is reported. She had complained of a painless and round mass of the left cheek for a duration of 14 months. Sialography, ultrasonography, CT scan and MRI were performed preoperatively. Sialography revealed a small duct separating from the Stensen's duct. CT and MRI showed that the tumor with smooth outline was lying on the masseter muscle and detached from the main parotid gland. The preoperative diagnosis was an accessory parotid gland tumor. The tumor was removed without facial nerve injur

PURPOSE: Besides sparing the parotid gland, sparing the submandibular gland is considered to be important in preventing xerostomia in head-and-neck cancer patients. Delineation of the submandibular gland at CT, and even on T(1)- and T(2)-weighted MR images, is difficult, due to low contrast with the surrounding tissues. MR sialography might be used for delineation.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Sixteen oropharyngeal cancer patients received a CT and MRI exam as part of the standard treatment imaging protocol. Patients were scanned in their five-point RT immobilization mask. The MRI exam included T(1

For diagnosis of SS and SD and the detection of early stages of disease one should necessarily take into account the symptom complex of "major" (salivary gland enlargement, xerostomia, exacerbation of parotitis) and "minor" stomatological signs (multiple cervical caries, dry lips, perlèche, mycotic and herpetic stomatitis, lymphadenopathy). The initial, marked and late stages were defined according to a degree of expression of stomatological manifestations. The initial stage prevailed in SS, the late stage in SD. The chief method of examination were sialometry, sialography and minor salivary g

A 3 yr old spayed female mixed-breed German shepherd dog was presented with a right facial swelling that developed after fighting with another dog. A parotid salivary mucocele was diagnosed via physical examination, fine-needle aspirate, and sialography of the parotid and mandibular salivary glands. Surgical excision of the right parotid salivary gland and duct was performed along with drainage of the mucocele. Neither intraoperative nor postoperative complications occurred, and follow-up examination 4 mo later revealed no evidence of recurrence. Case outcome was considered excellent. Sialogra

Many pathologic conditions of the salivary gland are diagnosed clinically. Until a few years ago, supplementary radiographic methods have only included plain film radiography and sialography. Both methods vary in usefulness, and the indications are controversial. During the last two decades other imaging methods, both radiographic and non-radiographic, have been used, and have provided clinically useful information. Probably the most useful of these is ultrasonography. Because the salivary glands are superficial structures they lend themselves well to ultrasonographic evaluation. Although sial

Dysfunction of the masseter muscle may cause pathological kinking of the parotid duct leading to parotitis; MR sialography is a non-invasive radiological examination that allows to evaluate dynamically the ductal system of the parotid glands. In the present study we aimed to assess the relationships between Stensen's duct and masseter muscle and their implications in the aetiopathogenesis of recurrent parotitis secondary to masseter muscle dysfunction. Forty-one patients with recurrent unilateral parotitis and nine with bilateral recurrent parotitis, all with a clinical suspicious of masseter

We describe a unique case of a 62-year-old patient with recurrent right submandibular sialadenitis. He initially appeared to have extensive sialolithiasis of the right submandibular duct on computed tomography imaging and examination, but sialendoscopy demonstrated a normal-appearing right submandibular duct. An accessory duct posterior and parallel to the normal duct was identified at the time of sialendoscopy and was found to have extensive sialolithiasis, which required removal by both an endoscopic and intraoral technique. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of sialolith

In head and neck district, major salivary gland diseases seem to have a considerable epidemiological and clinical impact, especially in obstructive disease. Major salivary glands, in fact, having a ductal system can develop several diseases: sialoadenitis, sialodochitis and sialoceles. Particularly, the obstructive sialoadenitis, with or without sialolithiasis, are the most frequent inflammatory disorder, especially for submandibular gland. In the clinical practice, the diagnostic approach for obstructive sialoadenitis up to now consisted of traditional Rx, ultrasonographic technique, scintigr

OBJECTIVES: Sjögren syndrome (SS) features salivary gland architectural changes such as ductal deformities and fat deposition secondary to inflammatory cell infiltrates; however, the anatomical and pathophysiological correlations of SS remain to be determined. This study aimed to determine the correlations of imaging findings based on the magnetic resonance (MR) sialography with the clinical and laboratory aspects of SS patients.
METHODS: We evaluated the MR sialographic findings of two pairs of parotid glands (PGs) and submandibular glands (SMGs) from 41 SS patients. The distinct MR sialogra

Sialocele is a subcutaneous cavity containing saliva, caused by trauma or infection in the parotid gland parenchyma, laceration of the parotid duct or ductal stenosis with subsequent dilatation. It is characterized by an asymptomatic soft and mobile swelling on the parotid region. Imaging studies are useful and help establishing the diagnosis, such as sialography, ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. This paper describes a recurrent case of a parotid sialocele in a young female patient. She presented a 6 cm x 5 cm swelling on the left parotid region. The ultraso

Salivary gland lesions were studied in 65 non-selected, confirmed rheumatoid polyarthritis patients. The investigations included a careful clinical study, the Schirmer test, sialography, sequential scintigraphy with Technetium 99, and a histological study of the sublingual glands. Tests were also made for salivary gland anti-epithelium antibodies. The frequency of sialography and scintigraphy anomalies is emphasized. In different degrees, two of of three patients presented anatomical or functional anomalies of the salivary glands. These disturbances were not related to the duration, the functi

This article presents 102 cases of recurrent parotitis in children with studies of clinical findings, sialographic manifestations, dynamic functions of the parotid gland examined with radionuclide, laboratory findings and follow-up studies of 28 cases with sialography. The following conclusions are reached: 1. Retrograde infection induced by the mumps virus and upper respiratory infection seem to play a major role in the etiology of recurrent parotitis. Familial abnormalities are potential factors. Incomplete immune functions of the children are factors related to the pathogenesis, and followi

A double-blind, retrospective analysis of 110 sequentially operated parotid masses compared the usefulness of preoperative radiologic evaluation to histopathologic diagnosis. The radiologic assessment included 25 sialograms, 162 computed tomography scans, and 10 nuclear magnetic resonance images. The diagnosis is influenced by the following four parameters of computed tomography: tumor borders, density, homogeneity, and enhancement. Well-defined borders, a homogeneous appearance, and high density strongly favor the diagnosis of a benign tumor or a low-grade malignancy (96.7%). Ill-defined tumo

Ultrasound examination for sialolithiasis was carried out in ten cases, and the findings were compared with those from sialography. Salivary stones were recognized as high-level reverberation echoes accompanied by posterior acoustic shadows in eight cases, whereas in the remaining two they appeared only as hyperechoic masses. In a case of sialolithiasis of the parotid gland that was difficult to detect by simple radiographic examination, a salivary stone was detected by both sialographic and ultrasonographic examination. Clearly separated salivary stones were also easily detected in each case

OBJECTIVE: To assess the correlation between MR imaging (MRI) of parotid glands with X-ray sialography, histopathology of the labial salivary glands, and salivary secretion, in patients with secondary Sjögren's syndrome (SS) associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
METHODS: Non-contrast MRI of the parotid glands was performed in 13 secondary SS patients associated with RA who satisfied the revised Japanese diagnostic criteria for SS (1999), and the ACR/EULAR classification criteria for RA (2010). The MRI findings were classified according to the degree of high-intensity signal on T1-weighte
