Automated sleep stage classification based on tracheal body sound and actigraphy.

The current gold standard for assessment of most sleep disorders is the in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG). This approach produces high costs and inconveniences for the patients. An accessible and simple preliminary screening method to diagnose the most common sleep disorders and to decide whether a PSG is necessary or not is therefore desirable. A minimalistic type-4 monitoring system which utilized tracheal body sound and actigraphy to accurately diagnose the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome was previously developed. To further improve the diagnostic ability of said system, this study aims

Staging of obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome: a guide to appropriate treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Early studies by Friedman et al. have demonstrated the value of staging obstructive sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) patients for the prediction of success for uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) on the basis of short-term follow up. The goal of this study is to test the value of this staging system in a prospective study. STUDY DESIGN: This is a prospective study of two cohorts of patients: one was treated with the benefit of a clinical staging system and the other without. METHODS: Patients with symptoms of OSAHS were assessed by polysomnography and were staged according to a

Site of upper airway obstruction in obstructive apnoea and influence of sleep stage.

Various sites along the upper airway (UA) are prone to narrow and collapse in patients affected by obstructive sleep apnoea. Sleep stages may eventually alter these sites. The present study was designed to determine the site(s) of UA obstruction and the influence of sleep stage on the pattern of obstruction. Twenty eight obstructive sleep apnoea patients underwent UA pressure measurements during polysomnography. Solid-state pressure sensors were located at the nasopharynx, oropharynx, tongue base, hypopharynx and oesophagus and the lower limit of UA obstruction was determined relying on the ob

Differential effects of sleep stage on coronary hemodynamic function during stenosis.

We have demonstrated in a previous study that in the normal heart REM sleep induces surges in heart rate and coronary blood flow which are abolished by bilateral stellectomy. To study the effects of sleep in the stenosed coronary circulation, dogs were instrumented with Doppler flow probes and hydraulic occluders around the left circumflex coronary artery to measure coronary blood flow and to produce a 60% flow reduction. Catheters were placed in the aorta to measure mean arterial blood pressure. Electrodes were implanted via the frontal sinus to identify sleep stages. In the absence of stenos

Sleep stage-specific effects of 0.75 Hz phase-synchronized rTMS and tACS on delta frequency activity during sleep.

Slow oscillatory activity during non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep plays a crucial role in both physical health and cognitive functions. Enhancing slow oscillatory activity during sleep has the potential to benefit these domains, yet an optimal stimulation protocol has not been established. This study aimed to investigate whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), synchronized with the trough phase of 0.75 Hz transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate EEG activity in the delta frequency range during sleep and enhance cognitive functions. Healthy adults

Sleep stage-dependent distribution of interictal epileptiform discharges in epilepsy: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Sleep and epilepsy interact through complex bidirectional mechanisms. Although NREM sleep facilitates interictal epileptiform discharges (IED), the diagnostic contribution of individual sleep stages remains uncertain. In particular, it is unclear whether deeper sleep stages such as N3 provide an advantage over N2 for spike detection or localization in clinical (electroencephalography) EEG practice. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed and Web of Science were searched for studies reporting quantitative IED measures across sleep stages in patients

A novel algorithm integrating multimodal information for improving OSA-related sleep staging.

PURPOSE: Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) has severely disrupted the sleep structure of OSA patients, resulting in a decline in sleep staging performance for these patients. The majority of the automatic sleep staging methods have not addressed this issue. Therefore, this article proposes a neural network to enhance the sleep staging result for OSA patients. METHODS: By leveraging the easily extensible nature of Broad Learning System (BLS), we construct a dual-branch, multi-context and multimodal integration framework for sleep staging. The core of the proposed framework lies in its disease-awar
