The Relationships between Social Capital, Metabolic, and Behavioral Risk Factors of Non-Communicable Diseases: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Contextual risk factors such as social capital have a vital role in affecting behavioral and biological risk factors of NCDs. We aimed to systematically identify the relationship between different aspects of social capital (SC) with metabolic, and behavioral risk factors of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). METHODS: This is a systematic review. The period of study was 2000-2021. We searched the English international databases, i.e. PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science. Studies that reported NCDs' metabolic and behavioral risk factors as independent variables, were excluded.

Work-unit social capital and incident purchase of psychotropic medications: A longitudinal cohort-study of healthcare workers.

BACKGROUND: Whether workplace social capital affects employees' mental health is debated. We examined the association between work-unit aggregated social capital and incident purchase of psychotropic medications among employees. METHODS: We used data from the WHALE (Well-being in Hospital Employees) cohort study. The study population comprised 21,711 employees without recent psychotropic purchase-history nested within 2283 work units in the Capital Region of Denmark. Employees were invited to participate in a survey in March 2014 (86% response). We assessed workplace social capital by eight i

Understanding COVID-19 Vaccination Intention in Japan: The Influence of Individual Social Capital and Personal Beliefs on Vaccination.

Background/Objectives: Vaccine hesitancy remains a significant public health challenge in Japan, particularly following the HPV vaccine suspension (2013-2022) that severely damaged vaccination trust. Although prior studies have linked individual social capital to vaccination behavior in Japan, whether and how personal vaccination beliefs modify this association remains poorly understood. This study examined associations between individual social capital (resources accessed through personal social networks) and COVID-19 vaccination intention, and how these associations interact with personal va

The lived experiences of women in recovery from substance use disorders: a qualitative study on social and recovery capital.

Recovery from substance use disorders entails an array of internal and external capacities that enable individuals to initiate and sustain the journey toward wellness. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of women who have recovered from drug use, focusing specifically on the role of social capital and recovery capital. Employing Corbin and Strauss's grounded theory (2015), the study involved in-depth interviews with a purposively sampled group of 15 female participants in Tehran who had maintained sobriety for approximately five years and were actively leading stable lives. Data

The mitigating role of social capital on the association between food insecurity and psychological distress among Chinese adults.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity, a pervasive global issue exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has been linked to adverse mental health outcomes. However, the role of social capital in mitigating this relationship remains understudied, particularly in the Chinese context. AIMS: This study investigated the associations between food insecurity and psychological distress (depressive and anxiety symptoms) and examined the potential moderating effects of bonding and bridging social capital among Chinese adults in Shanghai. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 3,220 Chinese adults (mean age:

Exploring the role of social capital in enhancing physical activity among college and university students: A systematic review.

College and university students often exhibit insufficient levels of physical activity, which negatively impacts their health, mental well-being, and academic performance. Social capital has emerged as a potential factor in promoting physical activity. This systematic review, conducted in line with PRISMA guidelines, examines the existing literature on the role of social capital in enhancing physical activity among college and university students. A search of the Web of Science, Scopus, SportDiscus, and PsychINFO databases identified 10 studies published by August 1, 2024, involving 2,700 stud

A study on factors that drive variation in the levels of social capital among people living with HIV/AIDS in Iran.

INTRODUCTION: Social capital is increasingly used in relation to health issues, particularly in sexually transmitted diseases/infections and health behaviors. Experiences indicated that social capital can contribute in changing HIV related risk behaviors and a decline of HIV infection through social groups and networking and make more effective use of HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment services. We aimed to assess social capital in these persons through a quantitative study. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was performed with a convenience sample of 300 people living HIV/AIDS referred

A four year (1996-2000) analysis of social capital and health status of Canadians: the difference that love makes.

Despite extensive research on the relationship between social capital and health, the specific pathways through which social capital is related to health have not been fully elucidated. Moreover, research has generally been cross-sectional, particularly in Canada, and hence not clearly attentive to the causal relationship between social capital and health. In this study we have examined the importance of multiple forms of individual social capital for the functional health status of adult Canadians, employing the Canadian National Population Health Survey (NPHS). We examine changes in health b

Social capital and rates of gonorrhea and syphilis in the United States: spatial regression analyses of state-level associations.

We conducted spatial regression analysis to account for spatial clustering of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and to examine the state-level association between social capital (using Putnam's public use data set) and rates of gonorrhea and syphilis. We conducted the analysis for the 48 contiguous states of the United States for 1990, 1995, and 2000 and controlled for the effects of regional variation in STD rates, and for state variation in poverty, income inequality, racial composition, and percentage aged 15-34 years. We compared the results of the spatial regression analysis with those

Social Integration as Mediator and Age as Moderator in Social Capital Affecting Mental Health of Internal Migrant Workers: A Multi-Group Structural Equation Modeling Approach.

The rise of migrant workers has been a unique social phenomenon as China goes through industrialization, urbanization, and modernization. They are a special social group formed during the economic and social transition of the country. Migration of rural labor has pushed China on its new path toward industrialization and urbanization. Because of the urban-rural dual system of the country, however, it is difficult for migrant workers to be fully integrated into host cities, making them susceptible to negative emotions and mental health issues. Therefore, their mental health is an issue of great

The causal relationship between family economic, cultural, and social capital and child health in urban and rural China.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the causal impact of family capital on the health of children and adolescents in China, focusing on the urban-rural divide. Despite research on factors like family income and parent-child relationships, causal relationships and urban-rural disparity remain underexplored. METHODS: The study incorporates factors like “family tradition” and “intergenerational care,” using longitudinal data from the China Family Panel Studies (2010–2020). Fixed effects models, lagged regression, and instrumental variable techniques explore family capital’s impact on self-rated h

Examining Social Capital and Its Relation to Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening among Underserved Latinas in the U.S.

Many Latinos in the U.S. experience structural barriers to health care. This study examined associations between social capital and breast and cervical cancer screening adherence among a sample of 394 predominately Puerto Rican and Dominican women. Data were collected at baseline from Latinas attending screening education programs in Buffalo, New York and New York City in 2011-2012. Social capital was higher among Latinas who were older, better educated, insured, an

Beyond Individual Coping: The Role of Social Capital in Community-Based Mental Health Support for Displaced Somali Youth.

Somali refugee youth face intersecting stressors related to displacement, economic hardship, and systemic exclusion, yet their coping strategies remain understudied. This study examines the psychosocial distress, coping mechanisms, and help-seeking behaviors of Somali refugee youth in Nairobi's urban displacement context using a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative analyses assess the prevalence of stressors, coping strategies, and perceived support, while qualitative responses provide insight into lived experiences. Findings reveal that 72% of participants reported distress linked to economic

AIM: This study investigated the association between social capital in late pregnancy and maternal mental health up to 5 years postpartum. METHODS: Secondary analysis of Communicating Healthy Beginnings Advice by Telephone trial data was conducted. Participants included women i
