Uneven densities of corticopontine neurons in the somatosensory cortex: a quantitative experimental study in the cat.

By use of large injections in the pontine nuclei of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate, the distribution of corticopontine cells in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) was mapped quantitatively. The borders of the cytoarchitectonic areas 3a, 3b, 1 and 2, together constituting SI, were determined cyto- and myeloarchitectonically. Flat maps showing the distribution of labelled cells in SI were constructed. All labelled cells were confined to lamina V, and present in deep as well as superficial parts of this lamina. The size spectrum of the corticopontine cells seemed to enc

Thalamic connections of three representations of the body surface in somatosensory cortex of gray squirrels.

The anatomical tracer, wheat germ agglutinin, was used to determine the connections of electrophysiologically identified locations in three architectonically distinct representations of the body surface in the somatosensory cortex of gray squirrels. Injections in the first somatosensory area, S-I, revealed reciprocal connections with the ventroposterior nucleus (VP), a portion of the thalamus just dorsomedial to VP, the posterior medial nucleus, Pom, and sometimes the ventroposterior inferior nucleus (VPI). As expected, injections in the representation of the face in S-I resulted in label in v

Relationships of functional connectivity of motor cortex, primary somatosensory cortex, and cerebellum to balance performance in middle-aged and older adults.

Connectivity of somatosensory cortex (S1) and cerebellum with the motor cortex (M1) is critical for balance control. While both S1-M1 and cerebellar-M1 connections are affected with aging, the implications of altered connectivity for balance control are not known. We investigated the relationship between S1-M1 and cerebellar-M1 connectivity and standing balance in middle-aged and older adults. Our secondary objective was to investigate how cognition affected the relationship between connectivity and balance. Our results show that greater S1-M1 and cerebellar-M1 connectivity was related to grea

Rat somatosensory cerebropontocerebellar pathways: spatial relationships of the somatotopic map of the primary somatosensory cortex are preserved in a three-dimensional clustered pontine map.

In the primary somatosensory cortex (SI), the body surface is mapped in a relatively continuous fashion, with adjacent body regions represented in adjacent cortical domains. In contrast, somatosensory maps found in regions of the cerebellar hemispheres, which are influenced by the SI through a monosynaptic link in the pontine nuclei, are discontinuous ("fractured") in organization. To elucidate this map transformation, the authors studied the organization of the first link in the SI-cerebellar pathway, the SI-pontine projection. After injecting anterograde axonal tracers into electrophysiologi

Stability of ruthenium oxide-coated microelectrode arrays for chronic stimulation of rat somatosensory cortex.

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the primary somatosensory cortex offers the potential for restoring sensory function in neuroprosthetic applications; however, achieving stable long-term performance from implanted electrode materials remains a challenge. Recently, ruthenium oxide (RuOx) has emerged as a viable faradaic coating material suitable for ICMS application due to its high-charge injection capacity, low impedance, and stable electrochemical properties. However, its long-term in vivo performance remains an area of active investigation. In this study, we evaluated the viability o

Somatosensory migraine auras evoked by bihemispheric cortical spreading depression events in human parietal cortex.

Cortical spreading depression (CSD) is associated with pronounced alterations in cerebral blood flow. These alterations can be captured using high-field functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). While compelling clinical and experimental data suggest that CSD is involved in the pathogenesis of migraine aura, the mechanistic intricacies remain poorly understood. Here, we use visual stimulus-induced blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI responses to characterize spatiotemporal alterations in cerebral blood flow during spontaneous attacks with migraine aura. Six adult participants diagnose

Increased excitability and reduced GABAergic levels in somatosensory cortex under chronic spinal cord injury.

The complete or partial damage of ascending somatosensory pathways produced by a spinal cord injury triggers changes in the somatosensory cortex consisting in a functional expansion of activity from intact cortical regions towards deafferented ones, a process known as cortical reorganization. However, it is still unclear whether cortical reorganization depends on the severity of the spinal cord damage or if a spinal cord injury always leads to a similar cortical reorganization process in the somatosensory cortex. To answer these open questions in the field, we obtained longitudinal somatosenso

Secondary somatosensory cortex evoked responses and 6-year neurodevelopmental outcome in extremely preterm children.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed in extremely preterm born (EPB) children whether secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) responses recorded with magnetoencephalography (MEG) at term-equivalent age (TEA) correlate with neurodevelopmental outcome at age 6 years. Secondly, we assessed whether SII responses differ between 6-year-old EPB and term-born (TB) children. METHODS: 39 EPB children underwent MEG with tactile stimulation at TEA. At age 6 years, 32 EPB and 26 TB children underwent MEG including a sensorimotor task requiring attention and motor inhibition. SII responses to tactile stimulation were model

Experimental tooth movement temporally changes neural excitation and topographical map in rat somatosensory cortex.

During orthodontic treatment, binding teeth, may change the topographically organized representation of teeth in the cerebral cortex. To test the hypothesis that experimental tooth movement (ETM) changes the somatotopy of an individual tooth arrangement in the somatosensory cortex, we examined the spatiotemporal features of cortical excitatory propagation in response to mechanical stimulation of the maxillary incisor or molar using optical imaging in late adolescent rats without or with ETM. The ETM models consisted of 1d, 3d, and 7d ETM in which a closed-coil spring was ligated between the ma

The distribution of mislocalizations across fingers demonstrates training-induced neuroplastic changes in somatosensory cortex.

The somatosensory system has been shown to alter its cortical activation patterns in reaction to changes in the attended sensory input to certain body parts. Whether these modifications in the functional organization of the somatosensory cortex of humans also result in perceptual changes has rarely been investigated. Here we used near-threshold tactile stimuli to the center of the fingertips to evoke mislocalizations to fingers other than the stimulated. In healthy untrained subjects, the distribution of the mislocalizations from each of the fingers was different from a distribution expected i

Theta-burst stimulation over primary somatosensory cortex modulates the tactile acuity of the tongue.

Emerging studies in humans have established the modulatory effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over primary somatosensory cortex (S1) on somatosensory cortex activity and perception. However, to date, research in this area has primarily focused on the hand and fingers, leaving a gap in our understanding of the modulatory effects of rTMS on somatosensory perception of the orofacial system and speech articulators. The present study aimed to examine the effects of different types of theta-burst stimulation (TBS)-continuous TBS (cTBS), intermittent TBS (iTBS), or sham-ov

Chronic Toxoplasma gondii infection contributes to perineuronal nets impairment in the primary somatosensory cortex.

Toxoplasma gondii is able to manipulate the host immune system to establish a persistent and efficient infection, contributing to the development of brain abnormalities with behavioral repercussions. In this context, this work aimed to evaluate the effects of T. gondii infection on the systemic inflammatory response and structure of the primary somatosensory cortex (PSC). C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice were infected with T. gondii ME49 strain tissue cysts and accompanied for 30 days. After this period, levels of cytokines IFN-γ, IL-12, TNF-α and TGF-β were measured. After blood collection, mice were

Persistent recruitment of somatosensory cortex during active maintenance of hand images in working memory.

Working memory (WM) supports temporary maintenance of task-relevant information. This process is associated with persistent activity in the sensory cortex processing the information (e.g., visual stimuli activate visual cortex). However, we argue here that more multifaceted stimuli moderate this sensory-locked activity and recruit distinctive cortices. Specifically, perception of bodies recruits somatosensory cortex (SCx) beyond early visual areas (suggesting embodiment processes). Here we explore persistent activation in processing areas beyond the sensory cortex initially relevant to the mod

Layer-specific touch-dependent facilitation and depression in the somatosensory cortex during active whisking.

Brains adapt to new situations by retuning their neurons. The most common form of neuronal adaptation, typically observed with repetitive stimulations of passive sensory organs, is depression (responses gradually decrease until stabilized). We studied cortical adaptation when stimuli are acquired by active movements of the sensory organ. In anesthetized rats, artificial whisking was induced at 5 Hz, and activity of individual neurons in layers 2-5 was recorded during whisking in air (Whisking condition) and whisking against an object (Touch condition). Response strengths were assessed by spike

Hand somatosensory cortex activity following selective dorsal rhizotomy: report of three cases with fMRI.

INTRODUCTION: Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is an effective treatment for lower extremity spasticity in cerebral palsy. Cortical organization in sensory cortex may be abnormal in cerebral palsy, and deafferentation is known to lead to cortical reorganization in many situations. METHODS: We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of hand sensory stimulation to determine if the partial deafferentation of the lower extremity sensory system, associated with SDR, led to any alterations in the cortical somatosensory representation for the upper limbs. Three patients with spastic dipleg

Dynamic changes in area 1 somatosensory cortex during transient sensory deprivation: a preliminary study.

To investigate the neural plasticity in the somatosensory cortex, changes in somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) during finger ischemia were evaluated and compared with those affected by touch or movement interference. Somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded in the vicinity of the central sulcus in four patients with intractable epilepsy. During electrical stimulation to a selected finger, ischemic anesthesia was induced in another finger. Effects of tactile or movement interference were examined during electrical stimulation to the selected finger by applying tactile stimulation to

Plasticity of primary somatosensory cortex paralleling sensorimotor skill recovery from stroke in adult monkeys.

Adult owl and squirrel monkeys were trained to master a small-object retrieval sensorimotor skill. Behavioral observations along with positive changes in the cortical area 3b representations of specific skin surfaces implicated specific glabrous finger inputs as important contributors to skill acquisition. The area 3b zones over which behaviorally important surfaces were represented were destroyed by microlesions, which resulted in a degradation of movements that had been developed in the earlier skill acquisition. Monkeys were then retrained at the same behavioral task. They could initially p

Neuronal response properties within subregions of raccoon somatosensory cortex 1 week after digit amputation.

Multiple penetrations in the somatosensory cortex of three anesthetized raccoons 1 week following amputation of the fourth digit provided detailed information about somatotopy and neuronal responsiveness in the deafferented cortex. Recordings in a total of 601 penetrations (292 in deafferented cortex and 309 in the surrounding cortex) were compared with those from intact control animals described previously (Rasmusson et al., 1991). The level of spontaneous activity increased within the deafferented cortex, with 42% of the sites having high or moderate levels of spontaneous activity, in compar
