Background: The increasing use of electronic cigarettes (ECIGs), especially among youth, has raised concerns about the impact of vaping on oral health. While ECIGs are often marketed as a safer alternative, the existing literature suggests that their use may have detrimental effects on the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems. The oral cavity is the first point of contact for ECIG aerosol, and new reports link vaping to the onset of periodontal disease. It is critical to understand the potential effects of vaping on the oral microbiome, which affects systemic health. This study investigates ho

We describe the antigenic properties of an anti-idiotypic single chain fragment variable (scFv) recombinant antibody mimicking the type III capsular polysaccharide of group B streptococci (GBS), an important cause of neonatal sepsis. This scFv could compete with the nominal antigen for binding to specific mouse or rabbit antibodies. Moreover, the scFv elicited, in mice, the production of antibodies which reacted against the type IlI polysaccharide and passively protected neonatal pups from GBS disease. Maternal immunization with the scFv also protected neonatal mice against GBS infection. Next

Members of the oral mitis group streptococci including Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Streptococcus gordonii are the most abundant inhabitants of human oral cavity and dental plaque, and have been implicated in infectious complications such as bacteremia and infective endocarditis. Oral mitis group streptococci are genetically close to Streptococcus pneumoniae; however, they do not produce cytolysin (pneumolysin), which is a key virulence factor of S. pneumoniae. Similar to S. pneumoniae, oral mitis group streptococci possess several cell surface proteins that bind to the c

BACKGROUND Infective endocarditis (IE) involving the mitral valve can but rarely lead to complete atrioventricular block (CAVB). CASE REPORT A 74-year-old man with a history of infective endocarditis caused by Streptococcus gordonii (S. gordonii) presented to our emergency room with fever and loss of appetite, which had lasted for 5 days. On admission, results of serologic tests pointed to severe infection. Electrocardiography showed normal sinus rhythm with first-degree atrioventricular block and incomplete right bundle branch block, and transthoracic echocardiography and transesophageal echo

Dental caries, as a biofilm-related disease, is closely linked to dysbiosis in microbial ecology within dental biofilms. Beyond its impact on oral health, bacteria within the oral cavity pose systemic health risks by potentially entering the bloodstream, thereby increasing susceptibility to bacterial endocarditis, among other related diseases. Streptococcus mutans, a principal cariogenic bacterium, possesses virulence factors crucial to the pathogenesis of dental caries. Its ability to adhere to tooth surfaces, produce glucans for biofilm formation, and metabolize sugars into lactic acid contr

UNLABELLED: As primary colonizers of the tooth surface, oral streptococci play a crucial role in dental caries development. Numerous natural compounds, including flavonoids, are emerging as promising agents for inhibiting dental biofilm formation without compromising bacterial viability, underscoring their potential in non-bactericidal antibiofilm strategies. This study investigated the effects and mechanism of action of the unmodified plant flavonoid cyanidin on the growth and sucrose-dependent biofilm formation of oral streptococci, with a particular focus on the cariogenic pathogen Streptoc

The DNA homology and cell wall sugar constituents of eight Streptococcus sanguis(-like) strains, three isolated from the patients with Behçet's disease (BD114-23, BD113-20, BD118-1), two from patients with Kawasaki disease (MCLS-1, MCLS-2), and three type and reference strains of ATCC (ATCC10556T: S. sanguis, ATCC10557: S. oralis, and ATCC10558T: S. gordonii) were analyzed. Strains BD114-23 and BD118-1 showed high DNA homology to ATCC10556T, and their cell wall constituents were identical. Conversely, BD113-20, MCLS-1, MCLS-2, and ATCC10557 showed little DNA homology to ATCC10556T and ATCC1055

Gouty involvement of the hand is uncommon and the complications the most described are bony destruction, digital joint instability, tenosynovitis and double ipsilateral tunnel syndrome of the median and ulnar nerves at the wrist. Septic complications, such as infection of a tophaceous nodule, are a rare entity. The authors report a case of an infection of a tophaceous nodule of the middle finger in a 67-year-old man. The diagnosis was suspected on physical examination and radiological findings but final diagnosis is provided by bacteriological examination. This case is presented to heighten aw

Streptococcus pneumoniae colonizes the upper respiratory tract from where the organisms may disseminate systemically to cause life threatening infections. The mechanisms by which pneumococci colonize epithelia are not understood, but neuraminidase A (NanA) has a major role in promoting growth and survival in the upper respiratory tract. In this article we show that mutants of S. pneumoniae D39 deficient in NanA or neuraminidase B (NanB) are abrogated in adherence to three epithelial cell lines, and to primary nasopharyngeal cells. Adherence levels were partly restored by nanA complementation i

INTRODUCTION: Salivary mucin MUC5B has been suggested to support eubiosis in early oral biofilms by regulating the attachment of commensals, while downregulating dysbiotic activities related to dental caries development, such as microbial carbohydrate transport and metabolism.
METHODS: To investigate how the metabolism of glucose, a potential driver for dental caries, in early mono- and dual-species biofilms of oral Actinomyces naeslundii and Streptococcus gordonii clinical isolates was affected by the presence of the complex salivary mucin MUC5B, this study employed nuclear magnetic resonanc

Recent developments have made it possible to construct non-reverting live bacterial vaccine candidates with defined deletions of two or more genes. Such vaccines have proven safe and immunogenic in human volunteers. Since the virulent parent strains are only pathogenic to man (S. typhi, S. flexneri, and V. cholerae), they pose no threat to the environment. Besides holding promise as efficacious vaccines for protection against typhoid fever, bacillary dysentery and cholera, the attenuated strains are well suited as vectors for delivery of heterologous antigenic epitopes from micro-organisms suc

The two-component system TCS08 is one of the regulatory systems that is important for virulence of Streptococcus pneumoniae. In order to investigate the TCS08 regulon, we have analyzed transcription profiles of mutants derived from S. pneumoniae R6 by microarray analysis. Since deletion mutants are often without a significant phenotype, we constructed a mutation in the histidine kinase HK08, T133P, in analogy to the phosphatase mutation T230P in the H box of the S. pneumoniae CiaH kinase described recently (D. Zähner, K. Kaminski, M. van der Linden, T. Mascher, M. Merai, and R. Hakenbeck, J. M

The occurrence of 36 environmentally regulated genes of Streptococcus suis strain 10 among all 35 S. suis serotypes was determined by using hybridization with the amplified genes as probes. In addition, the distribution of these genes among the virulence phenotypes of serotypes 1 and 2 was assessed. Hybridization was also performed with various other streptococcal species and nonstreptococcal bacterial species which may be present in pigs. Interestingly, probe ivs-25/iri-1, similar to agrA and sapR, hybridized only with S. suis serotype 1 and 2 strains with virulent phenotypes and is therefore

BACKGROUND: Streptococci frequently cause infective endocarditis (IE), yet the prevalence of IE in patients with bloodstream infections (BSIs) caused by different streptococcal species is unknown. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of IE at species level in patients with streptococcal BSIs.
METHODS: We investigated all patients with streptococcal BSIs, from 2008 to 2017, in the Capital Region of Denmark. Data were crosslinked with Danish nationwide registries for identification of concomitant hospitalization with IE. In a multivariable logistic regression analysis, we investigated the ris
