Machine Learning Methods for Hypercholesterolemia Long-Term Risk Prediction.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in blood lipids. Its role in the human body is helpful in the process of producing new cells as long as it is at a healthy level. When cholesterol exceeds the permissible limits, it works the opposite, causing serious heart health problems. When a person has high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), the blood vessels are blocked by fats, and thus, circulation through the arteries becomes difficult. The heart does not receive the oxygen it needs, and the risk of heart attack increases. Nowadays, machine learning (ML) has gained special interest from physicia

Enhancing Model Generalizability In Parkinson's Disease Automatic Assessment: A Semi-Supervised Approach Across Independent Experiments.

Machine learning in Parkinson's disease assessment uses data from clinically-coded movements, such as finger tapping, to objectively measure motor impairment. Video-based models showed promise in several experiments, but the lack of a unified test benchmark hinders proving generalizability. Additionally, new telemedicine systems may easily collect large amounts of unsupervised data, while obtaining ground truth labels for supervised learning remains time-consuming and requires specialized clinicians. This study explores semi-supervised learning to enhance the generalizability of a Light Gradie

Predicting genes associated with RNA methylation pathways using machine learning.

RNA methylation plays an important role in functional regulation of RNAs, and has thus attracted an increasing interest in biology and drug discovery. Here, we collected and collated transcriptomic, proteomic, structural and physical interaction data from the Harmonizome database, and applied supervised machine learning to predict novel genes associated with RNA methylation pathways in human. We selected five types of classifiers, which we trained and evaluated using cross-validation on multiple training sets. The best models reached 88% accuracy based on cross-validation, and an average 91% a

Foundation models for electrocardiogram interpretation: clinical implications.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) remains a cornerstone of cardiac diagnostics, yet existing artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for automated interpretation often lack generalizability, remain closed source, and are primarily trained using supervised learning (SL), which requires extensive labelled datasets and may limit adaptability across diverse clinical settings. Self-supervised learning (SSL) can potentially overcome these limitations by learning robust representations from unlabelled data. To address these challenges, this study developed and compared two open-

Sensor-Based Quantification of MDS-UPDRS III Subitems in Parkinson's Disease Using Machine Learning.

Wearable sensors could be beneficial for the continuous quantification of upper limb motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). This work evaluates the use of two inertial measurement units combined with supervised machine learning models to classify and predict a subset of MDS-UPDRS III subitems in PD. We attached the two compact wearable sensors on the dorsal part of each hand of 33 people with PD and 12 controls. Each participant performed six clinical movement tasks in parallel with an assessment of the MDS-UPDRS III. Random forest (RF) models were trained on the sensor data a

A machine learning approach to define antimalarial drug action from heterogeneous cell-based screens.

Drug resistance threatens the effective prevention and treatment of an ever-increasing range of human infections. This highlights an urgent need for new and improved drugs with novel mechanisms of action to avoid cross-resistance. Current cell-based drug screens are, however, restricted to binary live/dead readouts with no provision for mechanism of action prediction. Machine learning methods are increasingly being used to improve information extraction from imaging data. These methods, however, work poorly with heterogeneous cellular phenotypes and generally require time-consuming human-led t

The sound of Parkinson's disease: A model of audible bradykinesia.

INTRODUCTION: Evaluation of bradykinesia is based on five motor tasks from the MDS-UPDRS. Visually scoring these motor tasks is subjective, resulting in significant interrater variability. Recent observations suggest that it may be easier to hear the characteristic features of bradykinesia, such as the decrement in sound intensity or force of repetitive movements. The objective is to evaluate whether audio signals derived during four MDS-UPDRS tasks can be used to detect and grade bradykinesia, using two machine learning models. METHODS: 54 patients with Parkinson's disease and 28 healthy con

On Leveraging Machine Learning in Sport Science in the Hypothetico-deductive Framework.

Supervised machine learning (ML) offers an exciting suite of algorithms that could benefit research in sport science. In principle, supervised ML approaches were designed for pure prediction, as opposed to explanation, leading to a rise in powerful, but opaque, algorithms. Recently, two subdomains of ML-explainable ML, which allows us to "peek into the black box," and interpretable ML, which encourages using algorithms that are inherently interpretable-have grown in popularity. The increased transparency of these powerful ML algorithms may provide considerable support for the hypothetico-deduc

The Use of Kinematic Features in Evaluating Upper Limb Motor Function Learning Progress Based on Machine Learning.

Evaluating progress throughout a patient's rehabilitation process helps choose effective treatment and formulate personalised and evidence-based rehabilitation interventions. The evaluation process is difficult due to the limitations of current clinical assessments. They lack the ability to reflect sensitive changes continuously throughout the rehabilitation process. Kinematic features have been extracted from individual's movement to address this problem due to their sensitivity and continuity. However, choosing appropriate kinematic features for rehabilitation evaluation has always been chal

Continuous, Learned Imputation of Missing Values in Parkinson's Disease.

Parkinson's disease management requires accurate clinical scores but suffers from missing data. Leveraging self-supervised learning, we demonstrate superior generalization capabilities across populations compared to other well-established imputation techniques (MIWAE, MissForest, MICE). With the ability to employ the method already during the data collection and not afterward, the technology allows more robust data collection in clinical reality.

Efficient Data-Driven Machine Learning Models for Cardiovascular Diseases Risk Prediction.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are now the leading cause of death, as the quality of life and human habits have changed significantly. CVDs are accompanied by various complications, including all pathological changes involving the heart and/or blood vessels. The list of pathological changes includes hypertension, coronary heart disease, heart failure, angina, myocardial infarction and stroke. Hence, prevention and early diagnosis could limit the onset or progression of the disease. Nowadays, machine learning (ML) techniques have gained a significant role in disease prediction and are an essent

Predictive analytics for step-up therapy: Supervised or semi-supervised learning?

BACKGROUND: Step-up therapy is a patient management approach that aims to balance the efficacy, costs and risks posed by different lines of medications. While the initiation of first line medications is a straightforward decision, stepping-up a patient to the next treatment line is often more challenging and difficult to predict. By identifying patients who are likely to move to the next line of therapy, prediction models could be used to help healthcare organizations with resource planning and chronic disease management. OBJECTIVE: To compared supervised learning versus semi-supervised learn

Improving Endoscopy Lesion Classification Using Self-Supervised Deep Learning.

In this work, we assess the impact of self-supervised learning (SSL) approaches on the detection of gastritis atrophy (GA) and intestinal metaplasia (IM) conditions. GA and IM are precancerous gastric lesions. Detecting these lesions is crucial to intervene early and prevent their progression to cancer. A set of experiments is conducted over the Chengdu dataset, by considering different amounts of annotated data in the training phase. Our results reveal that, when all available data is used for training, SSL approaches achieve a classification accuracy on par with a supervised learning baselin

Boundary-aware information maximization for self-supervised medical image segmentation.

Self-supervised representation learning can boost the performance of a pre-trained network on downstream tasks for which labeled data is limited. A popular method based on this paradigm, known as contrastive learning, works by constructing sets of positive and negative pairs from the data, and then pulling closer the representations of positive pairs while pushing apart those of negative pairs. Although contrastive learning has been shown to improve performance in various classification tasks, its application to image segmentation has been more limited. This stems in part from the difficulty o

Seizure detection using hierarchical temporal trend integration and self-supervised learning.

Early, reliable detection of epileptic seizures from electroencephalography (EEG) remains challenging due to label scarcity, inter patient variability, and the non stationary nature of clinical recordings. This work introduces Federated Temporal Learning (FTL), an annotation efficient framework that couples a supervised seizure classifier with a self supervised pretext task, Temporal Sequence Consistency Learning (TSCLM), over a shared backbone. The backbone is built from Hierarchical Temporal Trend Integration Modules (HTTIMs) that extract and top down mix multi scale long and short term tren

A histomorphological atlas of resected mesothelioma discovered by self-supervised learning from 3446 whole-slide images.

Mesothelioma is a highly lethal and poorly biologically understood disease which presents diagnostic challenges due to its morphological complexity. This study uses self-supervised AI (Artificial Intelligence) to map the histomorphological landscape of the disease. The resulting atlas consists of recurrent patterns identified from 3446 Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stained images scanned from resected tumour slides. These patterns generate highly interpretable predictions, achieving state-of-the-art performance with 0.65 concordance index (c-index) for outcomes and 88% AUC in subtyping. Their cl

Detecting floating litter in freshwater bodies with semi-supervised deep learning.

Researchers and practitioners have extensively utilized supervised Deep Learning methods to quantify floating litter in rivers and canals. These methods require the availability of large amount of labeled data for training. The labeling work is expensive and laborious, resulting in small open datasets available in the field compared to the comprehensive datasets for computer vision, e.g., ImageNet. Fine-tuning models pre-trained on these larger datasets helps improve litter detection performances and reduces data requirements. Yet, the effectiveness of using features learned from generic datas

Supervised and unsupervised learning reveal heroin-induced impairments in astrocyte structural plasticity.

Astrocytes regulate synaptic activity across large brain territories via their complex, interconnected morphology. Emerging evidence supports the involvement of astrocytes in shaping relapse to opioid use through morphological rearrangements in the nucleus accumbens (NAc). However, a comprehensive assessment of astrocyte structural diversity within and between NAc subdivisions is lacking because of limitations in existing methodologies to quantify meaningful alterations in astrocyte structure. We developed a methodological pipeline that integrates supervised and unsupervised learning technique
