Meniscus damages are most common in sports injuries and aged knees. One third of meniscus lesions are known as white-white zone or nonvascular zones, which are composed of chondrocyte and extracellular matrix composition only. Due to low vascularization the ability of regeneration in such zones is inherently limited, leading to impossible self-regeneration post damage. Meniscus tissue engineering is known for emerging techniques for treating meniscus damage, but there are questions that need to be answered, including an optimal and suitable cell source, the usability of growth factor, the sele

BACKGROUND: The menisci of the stifle joint are essential for impact absorption, joint stability, and load support. Meniscal injuries, particularly of the medial meniscus, can lead to osteoarthritis and are generally associated with cranial cruciate ligament instability. Lateral meniscal injuries are less frequent. The aim of this study was to describe the frequency of medial or lateral meniscal injuries and cartilage lesions on the tibial and femoral condyles in cadaveric dogs with intact cranial cruciate ligaments, and to correlate the meniscal injuries with the tibial plateau angle and the

Meniscus injuries occur at a higher rate in the military than the general population. Appropriate management and rehabilitation of meniscus injuries is important for maintaining readiness. The purpose of this study was to describe the health burden of meniscus injuries in the Military Health System (MHS) to identify the surgical intervention rate for meniscus injuries, and to determine which injury characteristics and demographic variables were associated with the likelihood of surgery after injury. The U.S. Department of Defense Management Analysis and Reporting Tool, a database of health car

Meniscus and cartilage injuries of the knee joint lead to cartilage degeneration and osteoarthritis (OA). The research on biomaterials and artificial implants as substitutes in reconstruction and regeneration has become a main international focus in order to solve clinical problems such as irreparable meniscus injury, postmeniscectomy syndrome, osteochondral lesions and generalised chronic OA. In this review, we provide a summary of biomaterials currently used in clinical practice as well as state-of-the-art tissue engineering strategies and technologies that are developed for articular cartil

The meniscus is the most commonly injured structure in the human knee. Meniscus deficiency has been shown to lead to advanced osteoarthritis (OA) due to abnormal mechanical forces, and replacement strategies for this structure have lagged behind other tissue engineering endeavors. The challenges include the complex 3D structure with individualized size parameters, the significant compressive, tensile and shear loads encountered, and the poor blood supply. In this progress report, a review of the current clinical treatments for different types of meniscal injury is provided. The state-of-the-ar

BACKGROUND: Complex repairs of radial meniscal tears have shown increased fixation strength compared to conventional sutures. A simplified 2-suture hybrid and a novel dual tie-grip repair with interconnected vertical mattress sutures spanning the tear were tested and compared to all-inside double-horizontal and tie-grip repairs.
HYPOTHESIS: The dual tie-grip repair would increase the initial compression load across the tear and show the least cyclic displacement and highest failure strength.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: A total of 40 porcine medial menisci were assign

There is a paucity of data regarding using platelet-rich plasma therapy for Baker's cyst-associated medial meniscal tear. To date, conservative treatments for this type of condition include aspiration of fluid effusion with steroid injection and physical therapy. When this treatment fails, arthroscopic debridement, meniscectomy, cyst decompression and open cystectomy are available surgical management options. Recurrence rates, however, are high such that even these procedures fail to provide long-term pain relief. This case study explores the benefits of leukocyte-rich platelet-rich plasma the

Bilateral complete discoid medial menisci are extremely rare congenital anatomic variants of the knee. Currently, arthroscopic partial meniscectomy with or without peripheral suture repair is performed for symptomatic discoid meniscus. However, most of the outcomes are short-term. In this article, we present a pediatric case of symptomatic bilateral complete discoid medial menisci and highlight the effectiveness of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy with or without peripheral suture on symptomatic complete discoid medial menisci based on 60-month excellent clinical and functional results.

Meniscal injuries are a common challenge in orthopaedic surgery. Depending on their location and the patient's age and functional needs, they can be treated either conservatively or surgically. A surgical approach can consist of arthroscopic meniscectomy or meniscal suture. The latter is the treatment of choice in case of lesions involving the red-red or red-white areas of the meniscus, especially for young high-demanding patients. We report here our experience with the repair of longitudinal meniscal tears using the all-inside technique with the Fast-Fix™ 360 Meniscal Repair System (Smith & N

Meniscal tears are exceedingly common. Because the meniscus serves many vital functions to the knee joint, the preservation of meniscal tissue through meniscal repair is ideal. However, not all meniscal tears are amenable to repair, and each case must be critically assessed for repair suitability. It has been well documented that meniscal healing is enhanced in the setting of concurrent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. This may influence the indications for repair, as well as the repair technique. Meniscal repair techniques have evolved over time from initial open repairs to in

Repair of a longitudinal peripheral meniscal tear permits salvage of this structure in a high percentage of cases. In previous reports an arthrotomy was used to accomplish this repair; in this paper an arthroscopic technique is presented. The potential risks are significant and include damage to the peroneal nerve and popliteal vascular structures, failure of meniscal healing and the usual complications of arthroscopy. The procedure is recommended only for the advanced arthroscopist who is advised first to establish clearly by cadaver dissections the anatomical relationships.

AIMS: Flexion varus tibial plateau fracture (FVTPF) is associated with a substantial reoperation rate and poor outcomes. This study aims to clarify its fracture characteristics, investigate concomitant ligament and meniscus injuries, and explore correlations between fracture morphology and soft-tissue involvement.
METHODS: FVTPF patients with available CT and MRI data were included. Fracture mapping was used to present the fracture line and depression area in a spatial manner. Fracture morphological parameters were measured on CT, and ligament and meniscus injuries were assessed on MRI. Assoc

Accurate tunnel placement, graft passage, and secure suture fixation are key elements in meniscus allograft transplantation. We describe the use of a femoral distractor in meniscus transplantation. Joint distraction on the side of the transplantation by the femoral distractor can dramatically improve visibility and joint access. The distractor is applied after all necessary preparatory work. The distal femoral pin is placed in the supracondylar region on the side corresponding to the side to be transplanted. To avoid injury to the peroneal nerve, the proximal tibial pin is placed medial to lat

BACKGROUND: A torn meniscus is one of the most common indications for knee surgery. The purpose of this study was to determine the psychometric properties of the Lysholm knee score and the Tegner activity scale when used for patients with a meniscal injury of the knee.
METHODS: Test-retest reliability, content validity, criterion validity, construct validity, and responsiveness to change were determined for the Lysholm score and the Tegner activity scale. Test-retest reliability was measured in a group of 122 patients at least two years after they had undergone surgery for a meniscal lesion.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic meniscal injuries can cause acute pain, hemarthrosis (bleeding into the joint), joint immobility, and post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). However, the exact mechanism(s) by which PTOA develops following meniscal injuries is unknown. Since meniscus tears commonly coincide with hemarthrosis, investigating the direct effects of blood and its constituents on meniscus tissue is warranted. The goal of this study was to determine the direct effects of blood and blood components on meniscus tissue catabolism.
METHODS: Porcine meniscus explants or primary meniscus cells were exp

Medial meniscus posterior root tears and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries disrupt knee biomechanics and accelerate joint degeneration, particularly in the presence of varus malalignment. This technical note describes a combined surgical approach that integrates medial meniscus posterior root repair, ACL reconstruction, and high tibial osteotomy (HTO) to restore joint stability, optimize load distribution, and prevent osteoarthritis progression. The procedure is performed arthroscopically using anteromedial and anterolateral portals. Meniscal root and ACL footprints are prepared, and s

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are increasingly common in the skeletally immature population. As such there is a need to increase our understanding of the biomechanical function of the joint following partial and complete ACL injury during skeletal growth. In this work, we aimed to assess changes in knee kinematics and loading of the remaining soft tissues following both partial and complete ACL injury in a porcine model. To do so, we applied anterior-posterior tibial loads and varus-valgus moments to stifle joints of female pigs ranging from early juvenile to late adolescent ages a

Medial meniscus extrusion (MME) is the displacement of the meniscus beyond the edge of the medial tibial plateau. Proposed etiologies for MME include biologic degeneration of meniscal tissue, the result of a medial meniscus posterior root tear (MMPRT), and the failure of the meniscotibial ligament. Standard MMPRT repairs do not address this MME, as it often persists or worsens postoperatively, even with successful root healing. New techniques, such as centralization sutures, have been developed to supplement the standard MMPRT repair technique. Systematic reviews and randomized controlled tria
