A Unified Approach to the Correction of Male Torso Deformities After Massive Weight Loss: A 443-Patient Consecutive Series.

Although numerous techniques have been described, standardized approaches for comprehensive male torso reconstruction remain limited. This study presents a unified approach integrating circumferential planning, chest reshaping, and abdominal contouring. A retrospective review was performed of 443 consecutive male MWL patients treated between 2018 and 2024. All patients underwent a standardized protocol combining posterior body lift, chest reduction/mastopexy, and either standard or fleur-de-lis (FDL) abdominoplasty. Preoperative planning incorporated Pascal's Rule of 16 for circumferential mar

Optical Imaging of Ventricular Action Potentials in a Torso Tank: A New Platform for Non-Invasive Electrocardiographic Imaging Validation.

Background: Non-invasive electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) is a promising tool to provide high-resolution panoramic imaging of cardiac electrical activity noninvasively from body surface potential measurements. Current experimental methods for ECGI validation are limited to comparison with unipolar electrograms and the relatively low spatial resolution of cardiac mapping arrays. We aim to develop a novel experimental set up combining a human shaped torso tank with high-resolution optical mapping allowing the validation of ECGI reconstructions. Methods: Langendorff-perfused pig hearts (n = 3)

[A study of the predictive value of the primary review and complementary examinations in assessing the need for surgery in patients with stab wounds in the torso].

INTRODUCTION: Observation is the gold standard for stable patients with stab wounds. The aim of the study was to analyse the value of the primary review and complementary examinations to predict the need for surgery in stab wound patients in order to decrease observation times. METHODS: A retrospective study of stab wound patients recorded in a database. Clinical and diagnostic workup parameters were analysed. The main variable was the need for surgery. RESULTS: A total of 198 patients were included between 2006 and 2009, with a mean injury severity score (ISS) of 7.8±7, and 0.5% mortality.

Support for a linear length-tension relation of the torso extensor muscles: an investigation of the length and velocity EMG-force relationships.

This study investigated the hypothesis that the length-tension relation of the torso erectors would be linear, mirroring the observed linear increase in extension strength capability toward full flexion. The effect of torso extension velocity on the tension capability of these muscles was also investigated for common motion speeds. A myoelectric-based approach was used wherein a dynamic biomechanical model incorporating active and passive tissue characteristics provided muscle kinematic estimates during controlled sagittal plane extension motions. A double linear optimization formulation from

Risk factors for acute kidney injury in critically ill patients with torso injury: A retrospective observational single-center study.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in trauma patients and associated with poor outcomes. Identifying AKI risk factors in trauma patients is important for risk stratification and provision of optimal intensive care unit (ICU) treatment. This study identified AKI risk factors in patients admitted to critical care after sustaining torso injuries. We performed a retrospective chart review involving 380 patients who sustained torso injuries from January 2016 to December 2019. Patients were included if they were aged >15 years, admitted to an ICU, survived for >48 hours, and had thoracic and/or abdo

Determining the need for laparotomy in penetrating torso trauma: a prospective study using triple-contrast enhanced abdominopelvic computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: The nontherapeutic laparotomy rate in penetrating abdominal trauma remains high and the morbidity rate in these cases is approximately 40%. Selective management, rather than mandatory laparotomy, has become a popular approach in both stab wounds and gunshot wounds. The advent of spiral technology has stimulated a reassessment of the role of computed tomography (CT) in many aspects of trauma care. We prospectively investigated the current utility of triple-contrast CT as a diagnostic tool to facilitate initial therapeutic management decisions in penetrating torso trauma. METHODS: W

Prediction of trapezius muscle activity and shoulder, head, neck, and torso postures during computer use: results of a field study.

BACKGROUND: Due to difficulties in performing direct measurements as an exposure assessment technique, evidence supporting an association between physical exposures such as neck and shoulder muscle activities and postures and musculoskeletal disorders during computer use is limited. Alternative exposure assessment techniques are needed. METHODS: We predicted the median and range of amplitude (90th-10th percentiles) of trapezius muscle activity and the median and range of motion (90th-10th percentiles) of shoulder, head, neck, and torso postures based on two sets of parameters: the distributio

A preliminary comparison of total skin electron treatment techniques to demonstrate the application of a mid-torso phantom for measurement of dose penetration.

OBJECTIVES: In the UK, the treatment of patients with mycosis fungoides using total skin electron (TSE) beam therapy is undertaken using a number of different irradiation techniques. As part of a review of these techniques, a comparative set of measurements would be useful to determine how the techniques differ in terms of dose distribution. A dose penetration intercomparison method that could be used as part of such a study is presented here. METHODS: The dose penetrations for six treatment techniques currently or recently used in four centres in the UK were measured. The variation of dose w

Comparative analysis of body composition using torso CT from PET/CT with bioelectrical impedance and muscle strength in healthy adults.

The role of torso computed tomography (CT) in evaluating body composition has been unexplored. This study assessed the potential of low-dose torso CT from positron emission tomography (PET)/CT for analyzing body composition and its relation to muscle strength. We retrospectively recruited 384 healthy Korean adults (231 men, 153 women) who underwent torso 18F-FDG PET/CT, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and muscle strength tests (handgrip strength [HGS] and knee extension strength [KES]). CT images were segmented into three compartments: torso volumetric, abdominal volumetric, and abdomi

Breaking point? An analysis of fatal stab wounds to the torso in Ireland between 2011 and 2018, examining the extent of rib fractures.

This study examines the pattern of rib injuries occurring in cases of fatal torso stab wounds in Ireland between 2011 and 2018. It has been suggested by previous studies that rib fractures are not commonly sustained in stab wounds to the torso. We wanted to ascertain whether this was the case, as our data suggested that rib fractures were frequent, and where a rib is fractured there is a higher chance of organ injury and death, making this an important area of study. One hundred and forty seven cases of fatal stab wounds from an eight-year period were retrospectively reviewed. Fatal stab wound

Differences between the tactile sensitivity on the anterior torso of normal individuals and those having suffered complete transection of the spinal cord.

Using the method of limits and a magnitude estimation procedure, the sense of touch was examined at multiple sites on the anterior torso of normal subjects. Their performance was compared with the performance of individuals having experienced a functionally complete spinal cord transection more than 6 months prior to the tests. Near the insentient regions of the spinal cord-injured patients there was a zone wherein the threshold for light touch was elevated and variable. Within this same transition zone, estimates of the magnitude of a brushing stimulus increased as a linear function of distan

In-silico pace-mapping using a detailed whole torso model and implanted electronic device electrograms for more efficient ablation planning.

BACKGROUND: Pace-mapping is a commonly used electrophysiological (EP) procedure which aims to identify exit sites of ventricular tachycardia (VT) by matching ventricular activation patterns (assessed by QRS morphology) at specific pacing locations with activation during VT. However, long procedure durations and the need for VT induction render this technique non-optimal. To demonstrate the potential of in-silico pace-mapping, using stored electrogram (EGM) recordings of clinical VT from implanted devices to guide pre-procedural ablation planning. METHOD: Six scar-related VT episodes were simu

Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta versus resuscitative thoracotomy in traumatic non-compressible torso hemorrhage: A structured narrative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Non-compressible torso hemorrhage (NCTH) is a leading cause of preventable trauma death. Resuscitative thoracotomy (RT) has served as salvage intervention, while resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) has emerged as a less invasive alternative, though evidence remains discordant. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane CENTRAL through March 2026 for comparative studies of REBOA versus RT in adult NCTH patients. Risk of bias was assessed using ROBINS-I and RoB 2. A structured narrative synthesis was performed.

Negative catheter angiography after vascular contrast extravasations on computed tomography in blunt torso trauma: an experience review of a clinical dilemma.

BACKGROUND: Catheter angiography is often arranged when vascular contrast extravasations on computed tomography (VCEC) presents after blunt torso trauma. However, catheter angiograph can be negative for bleeding and further management about this condition is not well discussed. The purpose of this study was a review of our experience of this discrepancy and to propose management principle. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients who received catheter angiography due to VCEC after blunt torso trauma at a level one trauma center in Taiwan from January 1, 2006 to December 31,

Direct vascular control results in less physiologic derangement than proximal aortic clamping in a porcine model of noncompressible extrathoracic torso hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: The optimal method of vascular control and resuscitation in patients with life-threatening, extrathoracic torso hemorrhage remains debated. Guidelines recommend emergency department thoracotomy (EDT) with aortic clamping, although transabdominal aortic clamping followed by vascular control and direct vascular control (DVC) without aortic clamping are alternatives. The objective of this study is to compare the effectiveness of three approaches to extrathoracic torso hemorrhage in a large animal model. METHODS: Adolescent swine (Sus Scrofa) (mean weight = 80.9 kg) were randomized in

Detection of lower torso ischemia by near-infrared spectroscopy during cardiopulmonary bypass in a 6.8-kg infant with complex aortic anatomy.

Neonates and small infants with congenital heart disease and complex cardiac and vascular anatomy are particularly prone to episodes of complete or incomplete regional ischemia during cardiopulmonary bypass. These episodes may result either from inhomogeneous distribution of arterial blood flow via the aortic cannula or from impaired drainage of blood via the venous cannulae. However, techniques for continuous routine monitoring of regional perfusion in neonates or small infants undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass are extremely limited. Over recent years, transcranial near-infrared spectroscopy

An Integrated Rigid-Flexible Body Dynamic Approach to Computationally Efficient Musculoskeletal Modeling and Muscle Recruitment Simulation of the Lumbosacral Spine and Torso.

OBJECTIVE: In silico biomechanical models of the spine traditionally follow either rigid body dynamic (RBD) modeling (multibody modeling) or finite element (FE) modeling techniques. While RBD models lack robust representation for flexible tissues, FE models are computationally expensive. This study proposes an integrated rigid-flexible body dynamic (RFBD) architecture to address these limitations, and develops a full-torso human model, focusing spinal mechanical stability. METHODS: The model consisted of L1-L5 lumbar vertebrae, pelvis, sacrum, a lumped thoracic spine with ribcage as rigid bod
