Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for the Treatment of Concussion: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Post-concussive symptoms (PCSs) are common, disabling, and challenging to manage. Evolving models of concussion pathophysiology suggest evidence of brain network dysfunction that may be amenable to neuromodulation. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has emerged as a potential novel treatment option for PCSs. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review rTMS trials for the treatment of symptoms following concussion/mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of Pubmed/Medline, Embase, and PsychINFO databases were searched up

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in the Treatment of Bipolar Disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a debilitating mood disorder marked by manic, hypomanic and/or mixed or depressive episodes. It affects approximately 1-2% of the population and is linked to high rates of suicide, functional impairment and poorer quality of life. Presently, treatment options for BD are limited. There is a strong evidence base for pharmacological (e.g., lithium) and psychological (e.g., psychoeducation) treatments; however, both of these pose challenges for treatment outcomes (e.g., non-response, side-effects, limited access). Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-

Is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Appropriate For Treating Adolescents with Depression?

Children who are inadequately treated for depression often experience greater dysfunction. Problems can include conduct disorders, substance abuse, physical illness, and poor performance at school, work, or in psychosocial contexts. Depression can lead to a greater risk of suicide. Suicide is the third most common cause of death among adolescents, with more than 500,000 attempts made by children each year. Suicide is the third most frequent cause of death among young people ages 10 to 19 years old. Thus, proper treatment is important. Major depressive disorder in adolescents is often followed

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common and gravely disabling health concern. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an FDA approved treatment for major depression and may be a valuable tool in the treatment of PPD. The treatment effect of rTMS is rapid, generally well tolerated, without systemic effects, and without medication exposure to a fetus and/or breastfed infant. METHODS: Six women with PPD received 20 sessions of 10 Hz rTMS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) over a 4 week period. Psychiatric rating scales (BDI, EPDS, STATI), cognitive as

Investigational and Therapeutic Applications of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Schizophrenia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This current review summarizes the investigational and therapeutic applications of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in schizophrenia. RECENT FINDINGS: Fairly consistent findings of an impaired cortical excitation-inhibition balance, cortical plasticity, and motor resonance have been reported in schizophrenia. Cortical connectivity impairments have also been demonstrated in motor and prefrontal brain regions. In terms of treatment, the best support is for 1-Hz TMS to the left temporoparietal cortex for the short-term treatment of persistent auditory hallucinations. Hi

Accelerated repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in the treatment of depression.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is increasingly used clinically in the treatment of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, rTMS treatment response can be slow. Early research suggests that accelerated forms of rTMS may be effective but no research has directly evaluated a schedule of accelerated rTMS compared to standard rTMS. To assess the efficacy of accelerated rTMS compared to standard daily rTMS., 115 outpatients with MDD received either accelerated rTMS (n = 58) (i.e., 63,000 high frequency rTMS pulses delivered as 3 treatments per day over 3 days in

The contribution of transcranial magnetic stimulation in the diagnosis and in the management of dementia.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is emerging as a promising tool to non-invasively assess specific cortical circuits in neurological diseases. A number of studies have reported the abnormalities in TMS assays of cortical function in dementias. A PubMed-based literature review on TMS studies targeting primary and secondary dementia has been conducted using the key words "transcranial magnetic stimulation" or "motor cortex excitability" and "dementia" or "cognitive impairment" or "memory impairment" or "memory decline". Cortical excitability is increased in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and in

Deep transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of pathological gambling.

Five pathological gamblers received deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (DTMS). Evaluations included rating scales and collateral anamnesis. Despite initial improvement in ratings, collateral anamnesis demonstrated failure to respond. DTMS to the pre-frontal cortex using an H1 coil was an ineffective treatment. Our study is preliminary, and additional studies are required.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in the investigation and treatment of schizophrenia: a review.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive method of stimulating the brain that is increasingly being used in neuropsychiatric research and clinical psychiatry. This review examines the role of TMS in schizophrenia research as a diagnostic and a therapeutic resource. After a brief overview of TMS, we describe the application of TMS to schizophrenia in studies of cortical excitability and inhibition, and we discuss the potential confounding role of neuroleptic medications. Based on these studies, it appears that some impairment of cortical inhibition may be present in schizophren

Transcranial magnetic stimulation in the reversal of motor conversion disorder.

Agricultural soil harbors a diverse microbiome that can form beneficial relationships with plants, including the inhibition of plant pathogens. Pseudomonas spp. are one of the most abundant bacterial genera in the soil and rhizosphere and play important roles in promoting plant health. However, the genetic determinants of this beneficial activity are only partially understood. Here, we genetically and phenotypically characterize the Pseudomonas fluorescens population in a commercial potato field, where we identify strong correlations between specialized metabolite biosynthesis and antagonism o

[Transcranial magnetic stimulation of patients with a single epileptic seizure].

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was performed in 21 patients who had had loss of consciousness of unknown origin, in order to find out whether TMS could help in finding the cause of unconsciousness and to estimate the risk of provoking a seizure in patients who had single fits in the past. Furthermore, EEG recordings with hyperventilation, photostimulation, 24-hour EEG and sleep-deprivation EEG's were carried out as well as CCT or NMR investigation. In 15 patients the loss of consciousness was judged to be due to an epileptic seizure. None of the 21 patients had epileptic potentials in

Treating Depression With Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: A Clinician's Guide.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) applies electromagnetic pulses to stimulate cortical neurons. The antidepressant effect of the repetitive application of TMS (rTMS) was first shown nearly three decades ago. The therapeutic potential of TMS has been extensively investigated, mostly in treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Studies have extensively evaluated stimulation parameters, treatment schedules, methods to localize the stimulation target, and different magnetic coil designs engineered for desired stimulation breadth and depth. Several of these stimulation protocols and coils/devices

Cerebellar repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation versus propranolol for essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: Propranolol, a nonselective beta-adrenergic blocker, has long been used as one of the standard treatments for essential tremor (ET). Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has also been used for a long time as a substitution therapy for ET patients. OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this study was to evaluate the antitremor effect of 1-Hz (low-frequency) cerebellar rTMS and compare it to the use of propranolol in ET patients. METHODS: In this single-blinded, randomized, controlled pilot study, a total of 38 patients with ET were randomized into two groups. One group (n = 20

Transcranial magnetic stimulation entrains alpha oscillatory activity in occipital cortex.

Parieto-occipital alpha rhythms (8-12 Hz) underlie cortical excitability and influence visual performance. Whether the synchrony of intrinsic alpha rhythms in the occipital cortex can be entrained by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is an open question. We applied 4-pulse, 10-Hz rhythmic TMS to entrain intrinsic alpha oscillators targeting right V1/V2, and tested four predictions with concurrent electroencephalogram (EEG): (1) progressive enhancement of entrainment across time windows, (2) output frequency specificity, (3) dependence on the intrinsic oscillation phase, and (4) input fre
