Effects of anion excipients on the viscosity of high-concentration mAb solution.

High protein concentrations often lead to high viscosity, necessitating reduced solution viscosity. We investigated the effects of eight anionic excipients commonly used in biopharmaceutical formulations on the solution viscosity of high-concentration monoclonal antibodies using three antibodies with different isoelectric points. The three antibodies exhibited attractive or repulsive protein-protein interaction tendencies in histidine buffer without anionic excipients. The effect of adding anionic excipients on solution viscosity differed by interaction tendencies. Preferential interaction coe

Kinematic Shear Viscosity of Low-Molecular-Weight Liquids and Their Solutions.

This work is devoted to discussing the kinematic shear viscosities of low-molecular-weight liquids, including atomic liquids of the argon type, their mixtures, liquids with dumbbell-like and ring-like molecules (such as nitrogen and benzene), water, monohydric alcohols from the methanol series, and aqueous solutions of methanol and ethanol. We show that applying the standard activation approach to these liquids presents insurmountable difficulties. Additionally, we establish that all of these liquids are characterized by averaged interparticle potentials that have an argon-like structure. As a

Influence of Solvent Challenge on the Hardness and Toughness of Viscosity-Modified Composites.

BACKGROUND: This study assessed the effect of solvent aging on Vickers microhardness (VHN) and fracture toughness (KIC) of four resin composites: two high-strength flowable materials indicated for all cavity classes (GUF and CBF), a packable nanohybrid composite (XTE), and its flowable counterpart (XTEF). METHODS: Disk specimens (n = 6 per group) were photocured and stored at 37 °C in distilled water or in a 75%/25% ethanol/water solution for 1 or 30 days. Vickers microhardness was recorded with a 300 g load applied for 15 s. Single-edge-notched beam (SENB) specimens (32 × 6 × 3 mm; n = 6 per

Elevated blood viscosity is associated with dysautonomia in long COVID symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Long COVID is associated with elevated inflammatory and antibody levels. Elevated plasma proteins can increase blood viscosity and decrease blood flow. Our aim is to evaluate if blood viscosity is associated with long COVID outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study and included a sample of patients enrolled in our long COVID clinic. We estimated whole blood viscosity (WBV) using two previously validated formulas and compared it with the NASA lean test, COMPASS-31 scale as measures of dysautonomia and the symptom burden as measured by the modified COVID-19 Yorkshire s

Nanomaterials for Modified Asphalt and Their Effects on Viscosity Characteristics: A Comprehensive Review.

The application of nanomaterials as modifiers in the field of asphalt is increasingly widespread, and this paper aims to systematically review research on the impact of nanomaterials on asphalt viscosity. The results find that nanomaterials tend to increase asphalt's viscosity, enhancing its resistance to high-temperature rutting and low-temperature cracking. Zero-dimension nanomaterials firmly adhere to the asphalt surface, augmenting non-bonding interactions through van der Waals forces and engaging in chemical reactions to form a spatial network structure. One-dimensional nanomaterials inte

Effect of viscosity of gelatin methacryloyl-based bioinks on bone cells.

The viscosity of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA)-based bioinks generates shear stresses throughout the printing process that can affect cell integrity, reduce cell viability, cause morphological changes, and alter cell functionality. This study systematically investigated the impact of the viscosity of GelMA-gelatin bioinks on osteoblast-like cells in 2D and 3D culture conditions. Three bioinks with low, medium, and high viscosity prepared by supplementing a 5% GelMA solution with different concentrations of gelatin were evaluated. Cell responses were studied in a 2D environment after printing an

Non-Invasive Evaluation of Kidney Elasticity and Viscosity in a Healthy Cohort.

Introduction: There is currently a lack of published data on kidney elasticity and viscosity. Non-invasive techniques, such as two-dimensional shear-wave elastography (2D-SWE PLUS) and viscosity plane-wave ultrasound (Vi PLUS), have surfaced as new detection methods, which, thanks to efficient processing software, are expected to improve renal stiffness and viscosity measurements. This study aims to be the first one to assess the normal range values in normal renal function subjects and to investigate the factors that impact them. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study employing 50 part

The Impact of Artificial Tear Viscosity on the Results of Optical Coherence Tomography.

BACKGROUND: In earlier studies, an irregular tear film could be responsible for artifacts in imaging procedures in ophthalmology. As a result, this study will investigate the influence of hyaluronic acid-containing tear substitutes of different viscosities on the measurement results of optical coherence tomography and on the non-invasive tear film break-up time. METHODS: The study included three sessions in which three hyaluronic acid tear substitutes of different viscosities (Hylo-Vision 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%, OmniVision GmbH, Puchheim, Germany) were applied to each subject. In 20 healthy volunte

Zika Virus Alters the Viscosity and Cytokines Profile in Human Colostrum.

The resurgence of cases of Zika virus (ZIKV) infection, accompanied by epidemic of microcephaly in Brazil, has aroused worldwide interest in understanding the biological mechanisms of the virus that allow patient management and the viral dissemination control. Colostrum and human milk are possible sources of virus spread. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyze the repercussions of ZIKV infection on rheological parameters and inflammatory cytokines of colostrum. The prospective cohort study included 40 puerperal donors of colostrum, divided into 2 groups: control (without ZIKV in

Knee stiffness and viscosity: New implementation and perspectives in prosthesis development.

The pendulum test is a method applied to measure passive resistance of the knee. A new and simple pendulum test with instrumentation based on infrared camera was used to evaluate knee stiffness and viscosity on a female human cadaver. The stiffness and viscosity were calculated based on the kinetic data. During the measurements, the periarticular and intraarticular soft tissue of the knee was gradually removed to determine the stiffness and viscosity as a function of the tissue removal rate. The measurements showed that the removal of tissue around the joint reduces the damping of leg oscillat

[The influence of viscosity of synthetic urine on the flow rate through catheters].

BACKGROUND: There are special requirements for draining a pouch, e.g. length, flexibility and ability to drain highly viscous urine. METHODS: We checked in vitro the flow time of pure and synthetic urine thickened with hydroxyethylcellulose (0.125% and 0.250%, HEC) on selected catheters. RESULTS: We found for SpeediCath Compact Male (SCCM) as a CH12 catheter the shortest flow times for undiluted and urine thickened with 0.125% and for SafetyCath Plus for urine thickened with 0.250%. For catheters with CH14 we found significantly shorter flow times for all tested solutions. The flow time does

Role of pleural viscosity in the differential diagnosis of exudative pleural effusion.

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Determining the aetiology of an effusion involves assessing if it is an exudate or a transudate. However, a reliable test for determining the aetiology of a pleural effusion is lacking. Pleural viscosity has a high sensitivity and specificity and a high positive and negative predictive value for discriminating exudative and transudative pleural effusions. The aim of this study was to use pleural fluid viscosity to discriminate between various aetiologies of exudative effusions, namely malignant, parapneumonic and tuberculous. METHODS: Seventy consecutive patients (24

Is hemoglobin desaturation related to blood viscosity in athletes during exercise?

Several studies have suggested that athletes with low hemoglobin saturation during exercise may experience impaired pulmonary blood gas exchange during maximal exercise. Blood viscosity may be implicated in exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in race horses. We hypothesized that blood rheology may contribute to impaired gas exchange and reduced hemoglobin saturation during exercise in humans. A group of 20 highly trained endurance athletes participated in this study, 9 with low hemoglobin saturation during exercise (Low-SpO (2) group) and 11 with normal hemoglobin saturation (High-SpO (2) gr

Effect of sealant viscosity on the penetration of resin into etched human enamel.

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between the etched depth, penetration of sealants and marginal seal. Sixty unerupted lower first premolars extracted from patients for orthodontic reasons were thoroughly cleaned and stored in an antiseptic Ringer's solution at 4 degrees C. A "window" on the occlusal of 15 of the premolars, including both mesial and distal pits, was developed by painting nail varnish around the border of the occlusal surfaces. Etching was then done with 35% phosphoric acid for 60 seconds to all 60 premolars. Five of the "window" teeth were evaluated by mi

[Usefulness of blood and plasma viscosity measurements in the evaluation of arteriopathic patients].

Blood viscosity represents the internal friction of the blood, in other terms, its resistance to be deformed and to flow under a tangential force. This function is conditioned by the intrinsic characteristics of blood and the geometry of the system in which flow occurs. Thus, any in vitro (or ex vivo) system of measurement of blood viscosity represents a relatively approximate evaluation of the ratio between intertial forces and viscous resistance. However, the possibility of measuring blood viscosity in a reproducible way provided the opportunity of identifying some clinical conditions associ

The viscosity of red blood cell membranes in patients with beta-thalassaemia.

The purpose of this work was to study the viscoelastic behaviour of the red blood cell membrane (RBCM) in cells from patients with beta-thalassaemia and to investigate whether the precipitated haemoglobin, which is one of the main features of thalassaemic syndromes, influences the membrane viscosity. RBCM viscosities were determined using the micropipet aspiration method. A negative pressure of about 50 Pa was applied in steps at the membrane surface so as to cause partial aspiration of the cell and the entry process was analyzed automatically by a TV-line analyzer. This analysis enabled estim
