The M6-C Cervical Disk Prosthesis: First Clinical Experience in 33 Patients.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: To determine the short-term clinical succesrate of the M6-C cervical disk prosthesis in primary and secondary surgery. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cervical disk arthroplasty (CDA) provides an alternative to anterior cervical decompression and fusion for the treatment of spondylotic radiculopathy or myelopathy. The prevention of adjacent segment disease (ASD), a possible complication of anterior cervical decompression and fusion, is its most cited--although unproven--benefit. Unlike older arthroplasty devices that rely on a ball-and-socket-type de

The Moovis® implant for trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis: results after 2 to 6 years.

In this retrospective study we reviewed the outcomes of 46 trapeziometacarpal joint replacements with the Moovis® prosthesis in 46 patients with painful osteoarthritis. The dual mobility design of this prosthesis aims to reduce prosthetic dislocation and subsidence. At follow-up 2 to 6 years (mean 5 years) after operation, pain was reduced from 6 to 0 on a visual analogue scale from 0 to 10. The scores of the Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire improved significantly. Thumb motion and grip and pinch strength did not differ significantly from the contralateral hand. T

Revision of failed Rubis II prostheses with a dual-mobility Touch implant.

OBJECTIVES: Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis is the most prevalent upper limb arthropathy. Total joint arthroplasty has established itself as a trapezium-preserving alternative to trapeziectomy, but single-mobility implants carry a significant risk of dislocation. When revision is required, conversion to a dual-mobility implant is an appealing option, yet no published series has specifically evaluated the outcomes of this procedure. This study aimed to assess implant survival, functional outcomes and complications after revision trapeziometacarpal arthroplasty by conversion from the single-mo

What do blind people "see" with retinal prostheses? Observations and qualitative reports of epiretinal implant users.

INTRODUCTION: Retinal implants have now been approved and commercially available for certain clinical populations for over 5 years, with hundreds of individuals implanted, scores of them closely followed in research trials. Despite these numbers, however, few data are available that would help us answer basic questions regarding the nature and outcomes of artificial vision: what do recipients see when the device is turned on for the first time, and how does that change over time? METHODS: Semi-structured interviews and observations were undertaken at two sites in France and the UK with 16 rec

Photovoltaic Restoration of Central Vision in Atrophic Age-Related Macular Degeneration.

PURPOSE: Loss of photoreceptors in atrophic age-related macular degeneration results in severe visual impairment, although some peripheral vision is retained. To restore central vision without compromising the residual peripheral field, we developed a wireless photovoltaic retinal implant (PRIMA; Pixium Vision, Paris, France) in which pixels convert images projected from video glasses using near-infrared light into electric current to stimulate the nearby inner retinal neurons. DESIGN: We carried out a first-in-human clinical trial to test the safety and efficacy of the prosthesis in patients

Restoration of Vision After Brain Injury Using Magnet Glasses.

Visual impairments are common after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and negatively affect quality of life. We describe a 39-year-old woman with a severe TBI who was evaluated by the inpatient optometry and vision rehabilitation service with findings of complete right homonymous hemianopia and right cranial nerve III palsy with 30-degree right exotropia (eye turn out) and complete right ptosis (eyelid will not open). The 30-degree exotropia advantageously generated 30 degrees of right visual field expansion when the right ptosis was treated with a magnetic levator prosthesis, which restores eyelid

Long-term outcomes of total lumbar disc prosthesis: Sustained pain relief.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a leading cause of chronic low back pain and work-related disability. Total lumbar disc prosthesis offers motion preservation and may reduce adjacent segment degeneration compared to fusion. However, long-term functional and occupational outcomes remain underreported. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 130 patients (mean age 37.3±7.9 years; 71.54% male) who underwent total lumbar disc replacement between 2008 and 2020. Patients were assessed preoperatively and at a mean follow-up of 13.88 years using Visual Analog Scale (VAS

Introduction and Early Outcomes of Intraosseous Distal Radioulnar Joint Prosthesis: A Pilot Study and a Technique on a New Design of the Sauvé-Kapandji Procedure.

BACKGROUND: Different surgical procedures have been proposed for the treatment of Distal Radioulnar Joint (DRUJ) arthrosis and other conditions. This study aimed to introduce a new design of DRUJ prosthesis based on the Sauvé-Kapandji procedure followed by the evaluation of its short-term results. Darrach and Sauvé-Kapandji techniques are two well-known salvage procedures. Various implant designs have been proposed for DRUJ substitution to avoid the disadvantages of these procedures. METHODS: Before and after the insertion of the intraosseous DRUJ prosthesis in five patients, indices, such as

Functional outcome of reverse shoulder tumor prosthesis in the treatment of proximal humerus tumors.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of proximal humerus tumors with reverse shoulder arthroplasty with allograft augmentation is still controversial. A tumor prosthesis represents a proven solution for such osseous defects. We investigated the functional results of patients who underwent reverse shoulder tumor prosthesis (RSTP) without the use of allograft after resection of a proximal humerus tumor. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 10 patients with malignant proximal humerus tumors who had undergone RSTP, with a mean follow-up period of 18.2 months (range, 6-27 months).
