Work-family-self-care and day drinking among women during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The term "day drinking" is used colloquially to refer to drinking alcohol during daytime hours and has become part of the vernacular surrounding alcohol use. Anecdotal evidence is suggestive of increased day drinking among women during the COVID-19 pandemic, but empirical studies are few. This study assessed changes in the time of day women consumed alcoholic beverages during the pandemic and investigated whether their difficulty balancing work, family, and self-care was associated with the initiation of daytime drinking. METHODS: In June of 2020, 546 women age 25 and older comple

A Comprehensive and Structured Follow-Up for Persons With Multiple Sclerosis (CoreDISTparticipation) to Optimize Physical Functions, Health, and Employment: Protocol for a Prospective, Single-Blinded Randomized Controlled Trial and Health Economic Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease of the central nervous system, primarily affecting young adults. Common challenges in MS include fatigue, physical impairments, and cognitive impairments, associated with low levels of physical activity, unemployment, reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and substantial personal and societal costs. Many leave the workforce or reduce hours even when disability is low and despite a desire to increase work hours if the job is adjusted to their needs. Existing services aiming to optimize physical functions and work pa

Balance, Gait Kinematics, and Fear of Falling After a Four-Month Targeted Training Program in a Patient with Cervical Dystonia: A Case Report.

In cervical dystonia (CD), balance and gait impairments can compromise daily activities and negatively affect quality of life. However, interventions addressing these deficits remain poorly investigated. A 54-year-old woman with CD, presenting balance and gait difficulties that interfered with work-related motor tasks, underwent a four-month training program. Sessions (40 min, three times per week) combined lower-limb strengthening, proprioceptive and balance exercises, and integrated motor-cognitive tasks. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included gait speed (GS), stride length (SL), an

Changes in Work Arrangements, Psychosocial Working Conditions, and Worker Well-Being Between 2018 and 2022: Evidence From the General Social Survey.

BACKGROUND: We used national-level data to compare worker demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, work arrangements, psychosocial working conditions, safety and health, job security, wages and benefits, and worker health and well-being before the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2018, and in the late stage of the pandemic, in 2022. Understanding these changes helps inform some of the potential ways these factors may shape the future of work. METHODS: We analyzed self-reported and publicly available data from the 2018 and 2022 waves of the General Social Survey (GSS)-Quality of Worklife (QWL) modu

Perceptions of everyday life during lenient COVID-19 restrictions in Sweden- an interview study.

BACKGROUND: Both COVID-19 and its associated societal restrictions have affected individuals' health and everyday life. In Sweden, more lenient public health restrictions were implemented, with individuals asked to act responsibly in terms of reducing spread of disease. The majority of studies reporting on experiences of Covid-19 restrictions have been in the context of more substantial mandatory rules aimed at reducing social contact, therefore it is important to describe how more lenient restrictions have impacted individuals' well-being. This study aims to describe perceptions of everyday l

Age-related differences in lower limb muscle activation patterns and balance control strategies while walking over a compliant surface.

Substantial evidence demonstrates that falls in older adults are leading causes of fatal and non-fatal injuries and lead to negative impacts on the quality of life in the aging population. Most falls in older fallers result from unrecoverable limb collapse during falling momentum control in the single limb support (SLS) phase. To understand why older adults are more likely to fall than younger adults, we investigated age-related differences in knee extensor eccentric control, lower limb muscle activation patterns, and their relation to balance control. Ten older and ten younger healthy adults

Energy balance in advanced breast cancer: extending beyond the curative setting.

Outcomes in early-stage breast cancer, including quality of life, body composition, physical functioning, physiologic biomarkers, cancer recurrence, and mortality, are associated with body weight, diet, and physical activity. These same endpoints may also be relevant in patients with metastatic breast cancer; however, few studies have evaluated the role of energy balance in this setting. Future work is needed to determine how body weight, nutrition, and exercise or other physical activity might affect the disease course of metastatic breast cancer, and whether energy balance may be a component

"I have nothing more to give": Disparities in burnout and the protective role of immigrant status during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Burnout is an epidemic, with deleterious effects on individuals, patient care, and healthcare systems. The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic may be exacerbating this problem. We aimed to explore socio-cultural and gender norms that modulate burnout development in physicians during the pandemic and analyze any disparities associated with gender, marital and immigration status and work-life balance. We conducted an online cross-sectional survey of physicians (August-November, 2021): The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) was used to measure burnout, combined wit

Case of cerebellar ataxia successfully treated by virtual reality-guided rehabilitation.

A male patient in his 40s was transferred to our hospital for rehabilitation of ataxia after right cerebellar and brainstem infarction. After 3 weeks of conventional physical therapy, his activities of daily life successfully improved with an increase in the functional impedance measure from 101 to 124. However, he still fell short of gaining a higher level of balance function, which was necessary for his job as a standup forklift driver. We introduced virtual reality-guided balance training. The training was performed for approximately 40 min on weekdays for 2 weeks. As a result, the Scale fo

Medicine and motherhood: a cross-sectional survey of the experiences of women doctors in the Republic of Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Women doctors may face challenges in their pursuit of motherhood, including a higher likelihood of delayed childbearing and infertility. The psychological and financial sequelae of their experiences around fertility, pregnancy, and motherhood have the potential to impact both the individual doctor and healthcare systems. However, most research on these topics is focused on North America. Given differences in medical training and healthcare systems, laws, and cultures across regions, this study sought to examine women doctors' experiences of fertility, family planning, pregnancy, an

Work-home interface stress: an important predictor of emotional exhaustion 15 years into a medical career.

The importance of work-home interface stress can vary throughout a medical career and between genders. We studied changes in work-home interface stress over 5 yr, and their prediction of emotional exhaustion (main dimension of burn-out), controlled for other variables. A nationwide doctor cohort (NORDOC; n=293) completed questionnaires at 10 and 15 yr after graduation. Changes over the period were examined and predictors of emotional exhaustion analyzed using linear regression. Levels of work-home interface stress declined, whereas emotional exhaustion stayed on the same level. Lack of reducti

The causal effect of workplace violence on mental health and work-related outcomes: a cross-sectional study using propensity score matching.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of workplace violence in healthcare is 50-60%. While it has been linked to decreased job satisfaction, diminished quality of care, and economic burdens on healthcare systems, there are still major gaps. Previous studies ignored the Latin American perspective. Moreover, they neither offered causal evidence nor measured its impact on psychological outcomes. The objective was to evaluate the impact of workplace violence on psychological and work-related outcomes. METHODS: A secondary analysis of Peru's 2016 National Healthcare Satisfaction Survey was conducted. This
