Trunk and lower extremity long-axis rotation exercise improves forward single leg jump landing neuromuscular control.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries often involve sudden single leg loading with directional changes. Trunk and lower extremity (LE) load transfer and muscle power are directly coupled during these movements. The effect of trunk and LE long-axis rotation training on forward single leg drop jump landing and stabilization (FSLDJLS) was studied. METHODS: Using block randomization (gender), 36 (18 men, 18 women) subjects were assigned to experimental (nine, 20 min exercise sessions) and control groups with equal subject number. Ground reaction force (1000 Hz), kinematic (60 Hz)

Latent class analysis of sexual health markers among men and women participating in a British probability sample survey.

BACKGROUND: Despite known associations between different aspects of sexual health, it is not clear how patterning of adverse sexual health varies across the general population. A better understanding should contribute towards more effective problem identification, prevention and treatment. We sought to identify different clusters of sexual health markers in a general population, along with their socio-demographic, health and lifestyle correlates. METHODS: Data came from men (N = 5113) and women (N = 7019) aged 16-74 who reported partnered sexual activity in the past year in Britain's third Na

Quantitative assessment of nocturnal neural respiratory drive in children with and without obstructive sleep apnoea using surface EMG.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Recent studies have suggested potential utility of non-normalized respiratory muscle EMG as an index of neural respiratory drive (NRD). Whether NRD measured using non-normalized surface EMG of the lateral chest wall overlying the diaphragm (sEMGcw) recorded during nocturnal clinical polysomnography can differentiate children with and without obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is not known. What is the main finding and its importance? Non-normalized sEMGcw was increased in children with OSA and an additional group of snoring children without

Masseteric-to-Facial Nerve Transfer and Selective Neurectomy for Rehabilitation of the Synkinetic Smile.

IMPORTANCE: Synkinesis is the involuntary movement of 1 area of the face accompanying volitional movement of another; it is commonly encountered in patients affected by facial palsy. Current treatments for synkinesis include biofeedback for muscular retraining and chemodenervation via the injection of botulinum toxin. Chemodenervation is effective in reducing unwanted muscle movement, but it requires a commitment to long-term maintenance injections and may lose effectiveness over time. A permanent solution for synkinesis remains elusive. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate masseteric-to-facial nerve trans

Prolonged impairment of deglutition in supratentorial ischaemic stroke: the predictive value of Parramatta Hospitals' Assessment of Dysphagia.

BACKGROUND: Up to 50% of ischaemic stroke patients show initial dysphagia, which may persist for months. Guidelines recommend switching nasogastric (NG) to percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube feeding at the second week after the stroke if impaired deglutition is expected for another 4 weeks. Precise prognostic criteria are lacking. We hypothesised that the Parramatta Hospitals' Assessment of Dysphagia (PAHD) performed 8 to 10 days after the stroke predicts impaired deglutition for another 4 weeks. METHODS: After a first dysphagia assessment (buccolingual motor function, liquid and

Partitioning of the nervous system following exoskeleton and epidural stimulation in spinal cord injury.

The effects of percutaneous spinal cord epidural stimulation (SCES) on motor control have yet to be elucidated in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). We examined the effects of percutaneous SCES on the central and peripheral nervous systems after SCI. We determined the effect of SCES combined with exoskeletal assisted walking (EAW) and resistance training (RT) on motor performance as assessed by the 10 m-walking test, electromyography outcomes and spasticity measurement. Four chronic (6-24 years post-injury) motor complete (C8-T11 AIS A and B) persons with SCI underwent permanent implantati

Overcoming the HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Uptake Barrier With A Health Action Process Approach and Conditional Economic Incentives Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in 3 Chinese Cities: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite high pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness and willingness among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM), actual uptake remains critically low. The health action process approach (HAPA) is a 2-phase theory that addresses both the motivational and volitional phases of health behavior change, making it suitable for tackling the intention-behavior gap in PrEP use. In China, where PrEP is not covered by national health insurance, financial barriers further hinder uptake. Group-based conditional economic incentives (GCEIs) represent an innovative strategy to address cost-rel

Pulmonary ventilation and gas exchange during prolonged exercise in humans: Influence of dehydration, hyperthermia and sympathoadrenal activity.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of the study? Ventilation increases during prolonged intense exercise, but the impact of dehydration and hyperthermia, with associated blunting of pulmonary circulation, and independent influences of dehydration, hyperthermia and sympathoadrenal discharge on ventilatory and pulmonary gas exchange responses remain unclear. What is the main finding and its importance? Dehydration and hyperthermia led to hyperventilation and compensatory adjustments in pulmonary CO2 and O2 exchange, such that CO2 output increased and O2 uptake remained unchanged despite

Obesity worsens mitochondrial quality control and does not protect against skeletal muscle wasting in murine cancer cachexia.

BACKGROUND: More than 650 million people are obese (BMI > 30) worldwide, which increases their risk for several metabolic diseases and cancer. While cachexia and obesity are at opposite ends of the weight spectrum, leading many to suggest a protective effect of obesity against cachexia, mechanistic support for obesity's benefit is lacking. Given that obesity and cachexia are both accompanied by metabolic dysregulation, we sought to investigate the impact of obesity on skeletal muscle mass loss and mitochondrial dysfunction in murine cancer cachexia. METHODS: Male C57BL/6 mice were given a pur

[How to differentiate schizophrenia from bipolar disorder using cognitive assessment?].

BACKGROUND: Historical aspects of the dichotomy between manic-depressive disorders and schizophrenia raise the question of a continuum between the two entities. Griesinger (1817-1868) proposed a unitary concept of psychosis: "Einheitspsychose", adaptations of which have survived until the present day. Although Kraepelin's traditional dichotomy is still a common base for clinicians every day: diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of psychotic disorders, recent epidemiological and neurobiological data are congruent with a dimensional aspect of psychosis. Epidemiological data are consistent with the

Muscle metabolism, temperature, and function during prolonged, intermittent, high-intensity running in air temperatures of 33 degrees and 17 degrees C.

Nine unacclimatized university sportsmen performed a prolonged, intermittent, high-intensity shuttle running test in hot (HT) (33 degrees C, dry bulb temperature, approximately 28 %, relative humidity) and moderate (MT) (17 degrees C, 63 %) environmental conditions. Subjects performed 60 m of walking, a 15-m sprint, 60 m of cruising ( approximately 85 % V.O (2max)), and 60 m of jogging ( approximately 45 %V.O (2max)) for 14.8 +/- 0.1 min followed by a 3-min rest, repeated until volitional exhaustion. The hot trial was performed first followed, 14 days later, by the moderate trial. During exerc

Metabolic and thermodynamic responses to dehydration-induced reductions in muscle blood flow in exercising humans.

1. The present study examined whether reductions in muscle blood flow with exercise-induced dehydration would reduce substrate delivery and metabolite and heat removal to and from active skeletal muscles during prolonged exercise in the heat. A second aim was to examine the effects of dehydration on fuel utilisation across the exercising leg and identify factors related to fatigue. 2. Seven cyclists performed two cycle ergometer exercise trials in the heat (35 C; 61 +/- 2 % of maximal oxygen consumption rate, VO2,max), separated by 1 week. During the first trial (dehydration, DE), they cycled

Perspectives of Transplant Professionals on the Values, Ethics, and Challenges of Living Kidney Donor Evaluation in Asia.

BACKGROUND: Deceased donor rates in Asia are among the lowest in the world. This has necessitated a reliance on living kidney donation, which has given rise to concerns about donor motivation and assessment in this region. We aimed to describe transplant professional perspectives on living kidney donor evaluation in Asia. METHODS: Face-to-face, semistructured interviews were conducted with 53 transplant professionals (nephrologists [n = 21], surgeons/urologists [n = 17], coordinators [n = 7], social workers [n = 5], ethicists [n = 2], psychologist [n = 1]) from 20 centers in 10 countries. Personalized upper limb training combined with anodal-tDCS for sensorimotor recovery in spastic hemiparesis: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Recovery of voluntary movement is a main rehabilitation goal. Efforts to identify effective upper limb (UL) interventions after stroke have been unsatisfactory. This study includes personalized impairment-based UL reaching training in virtual reality (VR) combined with non-invasive brain stimulation to enhance motor learning. The approach is guided by limiting reaching training to the angular zone in which active control is preserved ("active control zone") after identification of a "spasticity zone". Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) is used to facilitate act

The influence of sex on activity in voluntary wheel running, forced treadmill running, and open field testing.

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity is commonly used for both measuring and treating dysfunction. While preclinical work has been historically biased towards males, the use of both male and female animals is gaining popularity after multiple NIH initiatives. With increasing inclusion of both sexes, it has become imperative to determine sex differences in common behavioral assays. The purpose of this study was to determine baseline sex differences in 3 activity assays: voluntary wheel running, forced treadmill running, and open field testing. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of sex differenc
