Contamination of seafood products with multi-drug-resistant (MDR) bacteria is considered to be a potential source for the spread of MDR bacteria in communities. However, little is known about the extent of the contamination of seafood, in particular shrimp, with MDR bacteria in Saudi Arabia. In this study, imported frozen shrimp in retail markets were examined for the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Escherichia coli. Escherichia coli was isolated from 40 frozen shrimp samples; a total of 25 and 15 shrimp samples were imported from China and Vietnam, respectively. Of the 40 examined fr

The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global menace to both public and animal health sectors with devastating effects in developing countries. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics in human health and livestock management contributes to development and rapid spread of AMR. Staphylococcus aureus is a major opportunistic zoonotic pathogen that colonises the skin and nostrils of human beings and animals and continues to develop antimicrobial resistance against different agents. The study aimed to determine multiple antibiotic resistance indices of S. aureus isolates from healthy domest

Staphylococci are one of the most common pathogens isolated from nosocomial and community acquired infections. Antibiotics such as clindamycin and erythromycin have been useful options for treating skin and soft-tissue infections caused by staphylococci. However, expression of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B resistance (MLSB) can limit the effectiveness of these drugs. The aims of this study were to investigate the prevalence and phenotypes of MLSB resistance in staphylococcus strains isolated from clinical samples and to determine the telithromycin activity against these isolates. BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) and antibacterial resistance (ABR) are important public health problems, but they are not well-studied among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) globally, especially in low-income countries. Therefore, it is important to regularly measure the extent of UTIs and ABR in the most susceptible populations. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of UTIs, associated factors, bacterial causal agents, and their antibiotic susceptibility profile among PLHIV in central Ethiopia.
METHODS: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was co

Objective: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is common in pregnant women. The selection of anti-infection plans during pregnancy must take into account the dual factors of patient pregnancy status and urinary tract infection anti-infection treatment, as well as the efficacy, cost, risk, and potential adverse reactions associated with each method applied to individual patients. Consequently, there are numerous drugs from which to choose; presently, there is no unified conclusion regarding the choice of drug therapy, and there is a lack of long-term drug treatment for UTI during pregnancy. Our objec

In an extensive, multiyear study of antibiotic resistance from wastewater oxidation ponds, five mobile home park wastewater oxidation ponds in Clarke and Oconee counties were shown to be discharging high numbers of antibiotic-resistant bacteria into the waterways of North Georgia. This effluent contributed to higher nitrogen, phosphorus, and fecal coliform levels in creeks downstream from the ponds. A survey of residents revealed that many people did not complete their antibiotic prescriptions, and the majority flushed leftover antibiotic medications down the toilet. In the pond discharges, re

BACKGROUND: Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are important device-associated infections among critically ill patients. The causative organisms and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns vary between institutions. However, institution-specific data regarding bacterial CLABSIs among adult intensive care unit (ICU) patients in central India remain limited. This study evaluated the occurrence, bacterial profile, and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of CLABSIs among clinically suspected adult ICU patients with central venous catheters (CVCs).

Purpose Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a worldwide environmental and public health problem, causing more than 250,000 deaths per year. Unregulated usage, unsafe hospital practices, and misuse in veterinary contribute to the development of multidrug resistance in various bacteria. Hospital water was hypothesized to be a hotspot for AMR transmission because of (1) increased exposure to antibiotic load, (2) poor drainage and sanitation system, (3) interaction between environmental and clinical microbes. The purpose of the research was to assess the biodiversity and AMR in hospital tap

Introduction:Clostridium perfringens and other gas gangrene-forming clostridia are commensals of the human gut and vaginal microbiota, but can cause serious or even fatal infections. As there are relatively few published studies on antibiotic susceptibility of these bacteria, we decided to perform a 10-year retrospective study in a South-Eastern Hungarian clinical centre. Methods: A total of 372 gas gangrene-forming Clostridium spp. were isolated from clinically relevant samples and identified with rapid ID 32A (bioMérieux, France) and MALDI-TOF MS (Bruker Daltinics, Germany) methods. UNLABELLED: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a global public health threat, exacerbated by rising drug-resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). DacB1, a D,D-carboxypeptidase critical in Mtb peptidoglycan biosynthesis, is a promising target for β-lactam antibiotics (BLs), which remain underutilized in TB treatment. Dual BL therapy may enhance efficacy by inactivating multiple targets within the peptidoglyan synthesis pathway. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for β-lactams and β-lactamase inhibitors against Mtb H37Ra, H37Rv, and clinical isolates showed that imipenem, me

Background Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) are potential pathogens and are often associated with healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Chlorhexidine (CHX) is the most widely used antiseptic to reduce colonization and infection by all Staphylococci, including CoNS. Resistance to CHX among CoNS has been observed over the past few years, consequent to its widespread use. Phenotypic tolerance or reduced susceptibility to CHX is conferred by plasmid-mediated qac group of genes, mainly qacA/B and smr, which cause activation of efflux pumps over the bacterial cell wall. This study aims to

Klebsiella pneumoniae which is a causative agent of nosocomial infections, is protected from phagocytosis and the lethal effect of serum bactericidal proteins owing to its capsular polysaccharides (CPS). The important leading problem in treating infections caused by this bacterium that successfully develops antimicrobial resistance, especially via mobile genetic elements, is that it acquires beta-lactamase genes, which are responsible for the resistance against beta-lactam antibiotics. Due to the increase in studies targeting capsular polysaccharides in developing strategies for vaccination an
