Pivotal role of the sympathetic nerves of the human heart in mental stress responses and triggered cardiovascular catastrophes.

Mental stress can trigger cardiac catastrophes, explicitly evident during national disasters such as earthquakes. Activation of the cardiac sympathetic outflow and inhibition of the cardiac vagus are important mediating mechanisms. This manuscript describes efforts by the Human Neurotransmitters Research Laboratory of the Baker Institute in Melbourne to develop investigative methods to study the sympathetic nerves of the human heart, and to apply these in mental stress research. With laboratory mental stress, activation of the adrenal medulla was found to occur, accompanied by a regionalized s

From innovation to implementation: a global scoping review of artificial intelligence applications, governance, and challenges in humanitarian contexts.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being explored as a tool for supporting humanitarian action through hazards and crisis prediction, real time monitoring of evolving crisis conditions and humanitarian needs, resource allocation, and decision-making. However, evidence on how AI is implemented, evaluated, and governed across humanitarian contexts remains fragmented. In this scoping review, we mapped the global evidence on the application of AI in humanitarian settings, including its distribution across the emergency management cycle, deployment maturity, and evaluation. We

Co-detection of antimicrobial resistance and virulence-associated determinants in Staphylococcus aureus isolated from radicular cysts in a post-disaster region of Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: Radicular cysts are among the most common chronic odontogenic lesions, yet the molecular mechanisms of resistance and virulence of their microbial flora remain incompletely defined. Following the 2023 earthquakes in Hatay, Türkiye, medical facilities were severely disrupted, creating a post-disaster clinical setting. This cross-sectional, isolate-based study descriptively evaluated antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and selected virulence-associated genes among S. aureus isolates recovered from radicular cyst infections in this setting. METHODS: A total of 225 clinical S. aureus

Musculocutaneous Pedicled Anterolateral Thigh Flap for Reconstruction of Stage IV Trochanteric Pressure Ulcers: Experience in Chronic and Acute Compression Injuries.

Background/Objectives: Trochanteric pressure ulcers represent a challenging reconstructive problem due to their depth, frequent infection, and tendency for recurrence. Durable coverage with well-vascularized tissue capable of effective dead-space management is essential for long-term stability. The pedicled musculocutaneous anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap offers substantial soft-tissue volume with reliable regional vascularity. Methods: A retrospective review was performed of consecutive patients with Stage IV trochanteric pressure ulcers who underwent reconstruction using musculocutaneous pedi

Radiation Risk Perception, Breast Cancer Anxiety, and Mental Distress among Women Who Participated in Breast Cancer Screening Programs in Minamisoma City: Five Years after Fukushima's 2011 Triple Disaster.

INTRODUCTION: The 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster following the Great East Japan Earthquake did not cause significant physical health effects, but long-term mental distress persists, partly driven by radiation risk perception. Women, particularly those undergoing breast cancer screening in affected areas, may experience heightened breast cancer anxiety and mental distress. The interrelationships among radiation risk perception, breast cancer anxiety, and mental distress remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate these associations among women in Minamisoma, one of the municipalities most se

Management of pelvic fracture urethral injuries in the developing world.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic fracture causes urethral injury in about 10% of patients. The etiology of injury is different in developing and developed world. While high-velocity automobile accidents are common in developed countries, where patients are in the car and there is usually a side impact, in the developing world, significant number of injuries are caused by two-wheeler accidents, pedestrians, farming accidents, fall from height, fall from tractor, fall from tree, and other causes like earthquake. We share our experience which is the largest in the reported literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Longitudinal course of disaster-related PTSD among a prospective sample of adult Chilean natural disaster survivors.

BACKGROUND: With an increasing number of individuals surviving natural disasters, it is crucial to understand who is most at risk for developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The objective of this study was to prospectively examine the role that pre-existing psychopathology plays in developing PTSD after a disaster. METHODS: This study uses data from a prospective 5-wave longitudinal cohort (years 2003-11) of Chilean adults from 10 health centres ( N  = 1708). At baseline, participants completed the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), a comprehensive psychiatric diag

Cholera: something old, something new.

BACKGROUND: In the aftermath of a devastating earthquake in early 2011, Haiti fell victim to an outbreak of cholera that claimed thousands of lives and affected populations in nearby Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and even the United States. This was the first time cholera had been reported in Haiti in more than 100 years. The sudden appearance of cholera, a pathogen with no known non-human host, raised the question of how it was introduced to an island that has long been spared this disease. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the history of cholera, its pathophysiology an

Post-tsunami medical care: health problems encountered in the International Committee of the Red Cross Hospital in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.

INTRODUCTION: When the Tsunami struck Asia on 26 December 2004, Aceh, Indonesia suffered more damage than did any other region. After the Tsunami, many humanitarian organizations provided aid in Aceh. For example, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), along with the Indonesian and Norwegian Red Cross opened a field hospital in Banda Aceh on 16 January 2005. This study describes the illnesses seen in the out-patient department/casualty department (OPD/CD) of the ICRC hospital nine weeks after the Tsunami. It describes the percentage of people seen for problems directly related to

Three-year trend survey of psychological distress, post-traumatic stress, and problem drinking among residents in the evacuation zone after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident [The Fukushima Health Management Survey].

AIM: Prolonged periods of instability in terms of living environment can lead to a serious increase in mental health issues among disaster-affected individuals. The aim of this study was to assess long-term trends in mental health among adult residents in a nuclear-disaster-affected area. METHODS: Mail-based, self-administered questionnaire surveys were conducted three times (T1-T3), targeting all residents registered with the municipalities in the evacuation zone in Fukushima prefecture at the time of the disaster. Age-adjusted prevalences of the following were analyzed by sex: risk of psych

Crush syndrome: a review for prehospital providers and emergency clinicians.

INTRODUCTION: Disasters and accidents have occurred with increasing frequency in recent years. Primary disasters have the potential to result in mass casualty events involving crush syndrome (CS) and other serious injuries. Prehospital providers and emergency clinicians stand on the front lines of these patients' evaluation and treatment. However, the bulk of our current knowledge, derived from historical data, has remained unchanged for over ten years. In addition, no evidence-based treatment has been established to date. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to provide a focused overview of

Notional Spread of Cholera in Haiti Following a Natural Disaster: Considerations for Military and Disaster Relief Personnel.

INTRODUCTION: Cholera remains a significant public health threat for many countries, and the severity largely varies by the population and local conditions that drive disease spread, especially in endemic areas prone to natural disasters and flooding. Epidemiological models can provide useful information to military planners for understanding disease spread within populations and the effectiveness of response options for preventing the transmission among deployed and stationed personnel. This study demonstrates the use of epidemiological modeling to understand the dynamics of cholera transmiss

Lateral Oscillation and Body Compliance Help Snakes and Snake Robots Stably Traverse Large, Smooth Obstacles.

Snakes can move through almost any terrain. Similarly, snake robots hold the promise as a versatile platform to traverse complex environments such as earthquake rubble. Unlike snake locomotion on flat surfaces which is inherently stable, when snakes traverse complex terrain by deforming their body out of plane, it becomes challenging to maintain stability. Here, we review our recent progress in understanding how snakes and snake robots traverse large, smooth obstacles such as boulders and felled trees that lack "anchor points" for gripping or bracing. First, we discovered that the generalist v

Molecular epidemiology of Vibrio cholerae associated with flood in Brahamputra River valley, Assam, India.

Cholera is often caused when drinking water is contaminated through environmental sources. In recent years, the drastic cholera epidemics in Odisha (2007) and Haiti (2010) were associated with natural disasters (flood and Earthquake). Almost every year the state of Assam India witnesses flood in Brahamputra River valley during reversal of wind system (monsoon). This is often followed by outbreak of diarrheal diseases including cholera. Beside the incidence of cholera outbreaks, there is lack of experimental evidence for prevalence of the bacterium in aquatic environment and its association wit
