Does high-field MR imaging have an influence on the classification of patients with clinically isolated syndromes according to current diagnostic mr imaging criteria for multiple sclerosis?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Current MR imaging criteria for multiple sclerosis (MS) do not specify the magnetic field strength. The aim of this study was to investigate whether different MR imaging field strengths, specifically high-field MR imaging, have an impact on the classification of patients with clinically isolated syndromes suggestive of MS, according to MR imaging and diagnostic criteria. METHODS: In a prospective intraindividual comparative study, we examined 40 patients with clinically isolated syndromes (CIS) consecutively with a 1.5 T and 3T MR imaging system, including axial sectio

Aging potentiates the acute and chronic neurological symptoms of pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency in the rodent.

The present study aimed to assess the role of advanced age in the development and manifestation of thiamine deficiency using an animal model of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS). Interactions between pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency (PTD) and age were examined relative to working memory impairment and neuropathology in Fischer 344 rats. Young (2-3 months) and aged (22-23 months) F344 rats were assigned to one of two treatment conditions: PTD or pair-fed control (PF). Rats in the former group were further divided into three groups according to duration of PTD treatment. Working memory w

Increased asymmetries in 2-deoxyglucose uptake in the brain of freely moving congenitally acallosal mice.

To investigate the role of the corpus callosum in the expression of functional brain asymmetries, we compared left and right uptake of [14C]2-deoxyglucose in 43 brain regions measured in 10 C57B1/6 mice with a normal corpus callosum and in 12 congenitally acallosal mice, after 45 min of free activity in a novel, large open-field arena. The metabolic patterns across the brain appeared to be similar in the two groups of mice, as well as the average direction of asymmetry in tracer incorporation, which was higher at right in most of the brain regions for both acallosals and controls. However, the

[MRI study of three siblings of suspicious Sjögren-Larsson syndrome].

We report the characteristics of high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of three siblings with hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), probably of autosomal recessive inheritance. The proband was a 25-year-old woman who manifested slowly progressive spastic paraplegia, mental deficit, decayed teeth since her childhood. The siblings of the proband, 29-year-old woman and 27-year-old man, also showed the same clinical course as hers, and the symptoms are more severe in elder siblings. The proband solely had ichthyosis on her neck and lower thighs, which suggested Sjögren-Larsson syndrome. Sagit

Diplotaxis erucoides-derived SynCom suppresses Alternaria blight in mustard by regulating ROS homeostasis and defense response.

Alternaria blight, caused by Alternaria brassicae, is a major constraint in Indian rapeseed-mustard cultivation, causing substantial yield losses. Diplotaxis erucoides, an oligotrophic wild crucifer exhibiting natural tolerance to Alternaria blight was explored as a source of beneficial endophytic bacteria. In this study, endophytic bacteria isolated from various tissues of D. erucoides were screened for plant growth-promoting and antagonistic traits against A. brassicae. Functionally efficient isolates showing growth promotion, phytohormone production, siderophore production and pathogen inhi

Silverleaf Nightshade (Solanum elaeagnifolium) Undergoes Guild-Specific Transcriptomic Reprogramming Against Chewing Versus Piercing Sucking Herbivory.

Solanum elaeagnifolium (silverleaf nightshade, SLN) is a globally invasive perennial weed with reproductive plasticity and complex defence systems that significantly impact crop yields by invading fields of staple, commercial and ornamental crops. Despite being a host to multiple insect herbivores, the molecular programming enabling its rapid adaptation to defend against diverse feeding guilds remains poorly resolved. Here, we report a comprehensive de novo transcriptomic assembly and comparative analysis of S. elaeagnifolium challenged by two distinct herbivores: the piercing-sucking generali

Loss of Zmiz1 in Mice Leads to Impaired Cortical Development and Autistic-Like Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: De novo mutations in transcriptional regulators are emerging as key risk factors contributing to the etiology of neurodevelopmental disorders. Human genetic studies have recently identified ZMIZ1 and its de novo mutations as a cause of a neurodevelopmental syndrome strongly associated with intellectual disability, autism, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, microcephaly, and other developmental anomalies. However, the role of ZMIZ1 in brain development or how ZMIZ1 mutations cause neurological phenotypes is unknown. METHODS: We generated forebrain-specific Zmiz1 mutant mice

A longitudinal study of inter-hemispheric transfer time across the corpus callosum in adults following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI): Evidence from event-related potentials (ERP) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).

Although visible symptoms of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), commonly known as concussion, may improve rapidly, subtle neurophysiological alterations can persist. One such indicator is the speed of visual information transfer across the splenium of the corpus callosum, also known as inter-hemispheric transfer time (IHTT). We quantified IHTT in adults with mTBI and demographically-similar control participants at an initial assessment approximately 3-4 weeks after injury and again at follow-up about 10 months later. The analytic sample comprised 94 participants between the ages of 18 and 45

Moving on in hydrocephalus imaging: from 2D to 3D biomarkers.

PURPOSE: Linear two-dimensional indices such as the Evans index, callosal angle, and fronto-occipital horn ratio remain the clinical standard for hydrocephalus assessment, yet are limited by measurement variability, insensitivity to spatial CSF redistribution, and reduced sensitivity to volumetric change over time. This narrative review aims to summarize established two-dimensional indices, their structural limitations, and describe how automated segmentation and radiomic feature extraction enable three-dimensional assessment across four clinical domains. METHODS: A narrative literature revie

Presenilin deficiency beyond amyloid: Lessons from presenilin 1/2 conditional double-knockout mice on synaptic failure, calcium dyshomeostasis, and inflammation-driven Alzheimer's disease.

Presenilins are best known as the catalytic core of γ-secretase, where familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD) mutations shift amyloid-β (Aβ) trimming toward aggregation-prone species. Yet conditional and cell-type-specific genetic analyses in mice now place presenilin (PS) biology far beyond amyloidogenesis. In PS1/2 conditional double-knockout (PS cDKO) models, which combine germline PS2 deletion with postnatal PS1 inactivation in forebrain excitatory neurons, the earliest phenotype is a synaptopathy: presynaptic release probability and short-term plasticity collapse, N-methyl-D-aspartate recepto

Moderately ectopic expressing NLP27 in potato confers high disease resistance without yield penalty.

A 27-aa peptide coding sequence NLP27 was moderately overexpressed in potato, conferring enhancing plant resistance to Phytophthora infestans and Streptomyces scabies infection without yield penalty through plant immunity promotion. The conserved short peptides derived from pathogen effectors can stimulate plant innate immunity response against pathogens through exogenous application. However, it remains to be explored whether the ectopic expression of these peptides in plants can trigger plant defense responses and affect plant growth. Here, we modified the nucleotide sequence of conserved 27

The zig-zag model of molecular defense and counterdefense in plant-herbivore interactions.

Plant-herbivore interactions follow zig-zag-like cycles in which herbivore- and damage-derived cues activate conserved defense signaling hubs, while insect effectors suppress or redirect these pathways, creating recurrent molecular bottlenecks that shape plant resistance. Plant-herbivore interactions are orchestrated through a dynamic molecular dialogue at the feeding interface, wherein insect attack triggers the generation of damage-derived signals from plant tissues and herbivore-derived signals from oral or salivary secretions. These cues can activate plant defense by sensing the damage- an

Neurophysiology in the mirror: A tri-layer model of mirror movements informed by TMS evidence.

OBJECTIVE: Mirror movements are involuntary, task-coupled contractions in contralateral homologous muscles during unilateral movement. While often described as a developmental remnant or rare clinical sign, mirror movements offer insight into the physiological mechanisms that underlie motor lateralization and interhemispheric balance. This review aimed to synthesize the available neurophysiological evidence-primarily from transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-and propose a structured, mechanism-based framework for interpreting mirror movements across neurological conditions. METHODS: A stru

Comparative Neuroplasticity in Frontal- and Lateral-Eyed Mammals With Induced-Binocular Vision Dysfunction: Insights From Monocular Deprivation Models.

Visual cortical plasticity during early postnatal life is profoundly shaped by species-specific ocular anatomy and ecological demands. This review synthesizes comparative evidence on how monocular deprivation (MD)-a classical model of amblyopia-affects visual system development in frontal- versus lateral-eyed mammals. Frontal-eyed species, including cats and primates, exhibit extensive binocular field overlaps and columnar architecture in the primary visual cortex (V1), making them highly susceptible to MD-induced shifts in ocular dominance and synaptic remodeling. In contrast, lateral-eyed sp
