Correction for acceleration-induced displacement artifacts in phase contrast imaging.

The acceleration-induced displacement artifact impairs the accuracy of MR velocity measurements. This study proposes a post processing method for correction of this artifact. Velocity measurements were performed in a flow phantom containing a constriction. Velocity curves were obtained from streamlines parallel to the frequency, phase, and slice directions, respectively. The acceleration-induced displacement artifact was most prominent when the frequency encoding direction was aligned with the flow direction. After correction, velocity assignment improved and a more accurate description of the

The effect of brief headward acceleration on human G tolerance.

OBJECTIVE: To generate, on a multi-axial centrifuge, a negative to positive acceleration profile that reproduces the physiological reaction and subjective symptoms experienced by agile aircraft pilots. Previous research will be summarized and current status of research described. METHODS: Experiments have been accomplished with the Dynamic Environment Simulator (DES) using different profile generating techniques. The DES was programmed with a set of open-loop profiles that provided five second duration baseline exposures ranging from +1.4 Gz down to -2 Gz followed by rapid transition to posit

[Changes of plasma endocrine hormone in pilots under Coriolis acceleration].

Plasma endocrine hormones were studied in both 24 motion sickness (orthostatic intolerance) and healthy pilots. Coriolis acceleration of 3.75, 5.00 and 6.25 pi 2 cm/s2 were given with intervals of 3-4 min AT-II, insulin, cortisol, Aldosterone and gastrin were determined by radioimmunoassay. It was found that aldosterone, AT-II, gastrin increased with increase of coriolis acceleration in all pilots. (P < 0.05), but cortisol and insulin only increased in healthy pilots (P < 0.05). It suggests excitation of the autonomic nervous system might be insufficient in orthostatic intolerant pilots and th

Sympathetic nerve response to muscle during anteroposterior acceleration in humans.

This study aimed to elucidate the effects of linear acceleration on muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) in humans. Eight healthy young male volunteers were seated in a linear accelerator (sled) during the recording of their electrocardiogram, blood pressure with the Finapres, thoracic impedance and respiration curve. MSNA was recorded from the tibial nerve by microneurography. At a fixed distance of sled movements in an anteroposterior direction, eight modes of stimulation with peak accelerations at 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20 G (gravity) in sinusoidal or step mode were applied to each sub

Female acceleration tolerance: effects of menstrual state and physical condition.

INTRODUCTION: The literature contains a paucity of information on female tolerance to high sustained acceleration. With women now flying high-performance aircraft, gender-specific factors that may affect female acceleration tolerance have become increasingly important. The purpose of this investigation was to determine how menstrual state and physical condition affect acceleration tolerance. We hypothesized the menstrual cycle would have no effect on acceleration tolerance and that a positive correlation would exist between physical fitness level and tolerance to high sustained acceleration.

Acceleration of Alzheimer's fibril formation by apolipoprotein E in vitro.

Numerous studies have established a linkage between the apolipoprotein (apo) E4 allele and late-onset Alzheimer's disease. It remains unclear if apo E plays a direct role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease and what, if any, are its significant interactions with amyloid beta (A beta) and tau. Apo E has been found immunohistochemically in all types of amyloid deposits and apo E fragments have been isolated from amyloid. Furthermore, apo E has been shown to bind soluble A beta. It has been proposed that apo E acts to promote and/or modulate A beta fibril formation. It is well established

Acceleration of pubertal development following pituitary radiotherapy for Cushing's disease.

A 7-year-old boy with pituitary dependent Cushing's disease was treated with pituitary irradiation following unsuccessful microadenomectomy. This led to normalization of the hypercortisolaemia, but was followed by GH deficiency. Two years after radiotherapy he had the onset of pubertal development with testicular enlargement to 8 ml bilaterally. Pubertal regression was induced using the long-acting GnRH analogue goserelin. Acceleration of skeletal maturation was also arrested, resulting in improvement of final height prediction. Irradiation directly to the hypothalamo-pituitary region, as well

Effect of increased acceleration on regional pleural pressure in dogs.

The variation of pleural pressure was measured in anesthetized spontaneously breathing dogs subjected to increased acceleration (0-4 G) in a centrifuge. Two groups of animals were studied. In one group, the resultant acceleration was in a direction either ventral-to-dorsal (+Gx) or dorsal-to-ventral (-Gx), with a relatively small residual cranial-to-caudal acceleration. In the other group, the resultant acceleration was either cranial-to-caudal (+Gz) or caudal-to-cranial (-Gz), with a relatively small residual dorsal-to-ventral acceleration. Pleural liquid pressure (Ppl) was measured by two ri

Assisted positive pressure breathing for augmentation of acceleration tolerance time.

The addition of assisted (chest counterpressure), positive pressure breathing (APPB) at 50 mm Hg (PPB50) and 70 mm Hg (PPB70) was compared to the current operational support of the G-suit and the anti-G straining maneuver (AGSM) without PPB (PPB0), during acceleration exposures of sustained 9 +Gz for 45 s and a 5-9 +Gz simulated aerial combat maneuver (SACM) to exhaustion. We selected 7 highly motivated male centrifuge subjects from a group of 31 volunteers. Positive pressure breathing was applied to the oronasal cavity with a Royal Air Force P/Q mask. Mask pressure was monitored continuously.

[Experimental acceleration of fracture repair by biochemical media (author's transl)].

The influence of calcitonine, amino acids, ribonucleid acids, kallikrein, growth hormone, and cyclic adenosine 3'5' monophosphate on fracture repair was tested in rabbits. To obtain an objective measurement of callus stability the bones were bent mechanically. The force applied and the degree of bending were recorded continuously. The slope of the curve was taken as a parameter of callus stability. In the series with calcitonine no influence on fracture healing was found. Injections of ribonucleic acids, amino acids, kallidrein, and growth hormone demonstrated a limited effect on bone repair.

Trichinella spiralis: acceleration and inhibition of cyst calcification in rats.

Daily administration of vitamin D3 (75,000 IU/kg b. wt) for 7 days accelerated Trichinella spiralis cyst calcification in rats with a 14-week-old infection. When disodium ethane-1-hydroxy-1, 1-diphosphonate (EHDP) was administered (50 mg/kg b. wt) from 2 days before until 2 days after vitamin D3 treatment, cyst calcification was inhibited. Thus, the ability to inhibit E. spiralis calcification has demonstrated for the first time.

Fetal activity acceleration determination for the evaluation of fetal reserve.

Fetal activity acceleration determination (FAD) was performed 462 times on a total of 410 patients for the evaluation of fetal reserve. Simultaneous oxytocin challenge test (OCT) was performed 324 times to evaluate the correlation between the two tests. In 308 instances, FAD was positive and OCT was either negative or probably negative. In 2 cases with inadequate FAD results the simultaneous OCT was suspicious and positive. In four instances of negative FAD the simultaneous OCT was positive. The correlation between the two tests was excellent. The outcome of all cases with positive FAD was als

Are Rubber Gloves Marketed as Accelerator-Free Truly Free of Accelerators?

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis to rubber accelerators in gloves has been well described in the literature. In response to this, glove manufacturers have recently marketed "accelerator-free" gloves. Little research has been done, to confirm whether these gloves are truly free from the accelerators known to cause contact dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to verify use of accelerators in reportedly accelerator-free/low-dermatitis-potential gloves. METHODS: A total of 16 commercially available medical gloves touted as "accelerator-free," "sensitive," or "low dermatitis pot

The autoimmune accelerating yaa mutation does not accelerate murine AIDS.

Murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (MAIDS) is characterized by lymphoproliferation, polyclonal B cell activation resulting in the production of autoantibodies, and a progressive immunodeficiency. These are all hallmarks of some autoimmune diseases. Yaa is a Y-chromosome-linked gene that accelerates autoimmune diseases in some autoimmune-prone strains of mice. To further elucidate a possible relationship with autoimmunity, the effect of the Yaa gene on MAIDS was investigated. Analysis of phenotypic and functional disease parameters revealed that Yaa does not accelerate MAIDS disease. Thi

Prevention of accelerated presbycusis by bone marrow transplantation in senescence-accelerated mice.

A substrain of the senescence-accelerated mouse (SAM), the SAMP1 mouse, is an animal model for accelerated senescence including the age-related acceleration of both immunological dysfunction and hearing loss caused by the impairment of spiral ganglion cells. In the present study, we examine whether the accelerated presbycusis can be prevented by allogeneic BMT. Young SAMP1 (H-2(k)) mice were irradiated with 9 Gy and then reconstituted with bone marrow cells from normal BALB/c (H-2(d)) mice. Allogeneic BMT was found to prevent the development of immunological dysfunction, hearing loss, and apop

Biological age acceleration and bradyarrhythmia: evidence from clinical and epigenetic perspectives.

BACKGROUND: To date, effective preventive and therapeutic strategies for early-stage bradyarrhythmia remain limited. METHODS: We first calculated two well-established biological aging (BA) measures (Klemera-Doubal Method [KDM] and Phenotypic Age [PhenoAge]), with BA acceleration defined as the residual from regressing each BA measure on chronological age. Cox proportional hazards models were used to evaluate the effects of BA acceleration on bradyarrhythmia risk. We then conducted epigenetic Mendelian randomization (MR) and colocalization analyses to prioritize aging-related DNA methylation C

Acceleration-based Clustering Reveals Frequent Gait Switching in Sprint Sled Dogs.

Continuous video is difficult to obtain during field studies of sprint sled dogs, limiting analysis of stride-to-stride variation during load-pulling gallop. We developed an acceleration-based pipeline to identify recurrent stride states from harness-mounted tri-axial accelerometers without manual gait labels. Using multivariate dynamic time warping, manifold embedding, and density-based clustering, we analyzed more than 20,000 strides from a 10-dog team and identified recurrent, dog-specific stride states. In one previously annotated individual, acceleration-derived states were broadly consis
