Facial nerve function was examined in patients who underwent posterior fossa surgery for unilateral acoustic neuroma. Examinations took place prior to surgery (n = 47 patients), early after surgery (0-12 days, n = 16 of 47 patients), and late after surgery (187-1505 days, n = 29 of 47 patients). Clinical signs of facial palsy were present to a variable extent in 13 of 47 patients before, in 12 of 16 patients early, and in 18 of 29 patients later after surgery. Electrophysiologically, the facial nerve was stimulated electrically at the stylomastoid fossa and magnetically at its proximal intraca

OBJECTIVE: Transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation (TMAS) is an innovative non-invasive technique designed for neural modulation, utilizing coupled magnetic and acoustic fields to regulate brain neural activity. Alterations in the electrophysiological activity between the motor cortex (MC) and subthalamic nucleus (STN) are implicated in the motor impairments of Parkinson's disease (PD).
METHOD: This study aimed to investigate the alterant electrophysiological activities in the STN-MC pathway. Using TMAS on the STN of PD rats, changes in beta-frequency(12-30 Hz) power and coherence in the mo

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized primarily by motor dysfunction. Transcranial magneto-acoustic stimulation (TMAS), an emerging non-invasive brain neuromodulation technology, is increasingly being applied in the treatment of brain diseases. However, the effects of TMAS on PD are unknown, which is not well studied. Here, we utilized TMAS on PD model mice induced by MPTP to investigate the underlying mechanism of therapy. Our study found that TMAS improved the behavioral performance of PD model mice, enhancing the motor function and motivation for movement. B

Transcranial magneto-acoustic-electrical stimulation is a new non-invasive neuromodulation technology, in which the induced electric field generated by the coupling effect of ultrasound and static magnetic field are used to regulate the neural rhythm oscillation activity in the corresponding brain region. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of transcranial magneto-acoustic-electrical stimulation on the information transfer and communication in neuronal clusters during memory. In the experiment, twenty healthy adult Wistar rats were randomly divided into a control group (fiv

The authors report the case of a young man suffering from neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) who harbored bilateral acoustic schwannomas and a parasellar meningioma. Neuroimaging studies performed during a 4-year follow-up period showed that the bilateral schwannomas had grown very little and at similar rates. However, after the meningioma had infiltrated the tentorium and approached the ipsilateral schwannoma at the incisura, both Schwann cell tumors started to grow rapidly, particularly the one adjacent to the meningioma, of which the percentage of annual growth rate increased by approximately a

Regional selectivity of gentamicin (GM) ototoxicity was studied in guinea pigs (GPs) using electrophysiological, morphological, autoradiographic and immunohistological observations following combined treatment with GM (150 mg/kg i.m.) and ethacrynic acid (EA) (30 mg/kg i.c. or i.v., 1.5 h after GM injection). The GPs were either continuously stimulated every 5 min with a series of 256 clicks (70 dB peSPL, 10/s) during 3 h for monitoring fast changes in VIII nerve compound action potential (CAP) after the EA injection, and thereafter kept in the animal quarters (background noise of 60 dB SPL) (

Acoustic stimulation is one of the most influential techniques for distressing tinnitus, while how it functions to reverse neural changes associated with tinnitus remains undisclosed. In this study, our objective is to investigate alterations in brain networks to shed light on the enigma of acoustic intervention for tinnitus. We designed a 75-day long-term acoustic intervention experiment, during which chronic tinnitus patients received daily modulated acoustic stimulation with each session lasting 15 days. Every 15 days, professional tinnitus assessments were conducted, collecting both electr

There is an increasing trend to provide cochlear implants for people with useful residual hearing, typically in the low frequency range (<2 kHz). These recipients typically use both electrical stimulation from their implant and acoustic stimulation that has been amplified with a hearing aid to access their residual hearing, so called electro-acoustic stimulation (EAS). However, a significant problem is the loss of residual hearing following implantation that can occur immediately following surgery or delayed over many months. One potential cause of the loss of residual hearing is the over stim

The horizon of nanomedicine research is moving toward the design of therapeutic tools able to be completely safe per se, and simultaneously be capable of becoming toxic when externally activated by stimuli of different nature. Among all the stimuli, ultrasounds come to the fore as an innovative approach to produce cytotoxicity on demand in presence of NPs, without invasiveness, with high biosafety and low cost. In this context, zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) are among the most promising metal oxide materials for theranostic application due to their optical and semi-conductor properties, high s

Filter theory indicates that changes in cochlear filter bandwidths are accompanied by changes in cochlear response latencies. Previous reports indicate that otoacoustic emission (OAE) delays are reduced by exciting medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents with contralateral broad-band noise (CBBN). These delay reductions are consistent with MOC-induced widening of cochlear filters. We quantified the MOC-induced changes in human cochlear filter-related delays using stimulus-frequency and click-evoked OAEs (SFOAE and CEOAEs), recorded with and without MOC activity elicited by 60dB SPL CBBN. MOC-indu

A case is presented in which external vibratory acoustic stimulation performed following a nonreactive nonstress test produced a severe variable deceleration of the fetal heart rate. A clinically suspected nuchal cord was confirmed by ultrasound. This rapid precise antepartum diagnosis of cord compression prevented untimely delay and led to immediate abdominal delivery of a nonacidotic, yet hypoxic, infant. This report suggests care be taken when fetal vibratory acoustic stimulation is applied in cases of oligohydramnios and a known existing nuchal cord.

1) BCEOE have been obtained in subjects with normal hearing by 1 kHz tone-bursts; 2) the morphology of BCEOE varies from one subject to another, and is stable over the course of time. BCEOE do not display a linear relation between their amplitude and the intensity of the stimulus, whose spectral composition is the same as theirs; 3) by contrast with ACEOE, whose mean threshold is the same as that of the subjective tonal threshold for the same stimulus presented by the same stimulation modality, BCEOE threshold, on overage, is about 10 dB HTL higher; 4) this difference in threshold is not due t

Transcranial magneto-acoustic electrical stimulation (TMAES) is a non-invasive novel neuromodulation technique based on the magneto-acoustic coupling effect. In this study, we employed APP/PS1 transgenic mice as an experimental model, targeting the hippocampus. Cognitive function was assessed through behavioral tests, while neuronal morphology was examined using hematoxylin-eosin and Golgi staining. Additionally, fiber photometry was utilized to measure calcium transient intensity in the CA1 region. By investigating the effects of TMAES on synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus, we aimed to el
