Adventitial Collagen Cross-Linking by Glutaraldehyde Reinforcing Human Saphenous Vein - Implication for Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting.

INTRODUCTION: A weak venous wall is one of the major reasons contributing to vein graft failure after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). We investigated whether adventitial collagen cross-linking by glutaraldehyde reinforces venous wall, preserving the endothelium of veins during high-pressure distention. METHODS: Human saphenous veins (SVs) were collected from 40 patients undergoing CABG, and adventitia cross-linking was performed with 0.3% glutaraldehyde for five minutes. The cross-linked SVs were accessed by biodegradation assay, immunofluorescent staining, and tensile test. Native SV

Claudication due to adventitial cystic degeneration: A differential diagnosis of peripheral artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is an important and rare non-atherosclerotic cause of intermittent claudication and critical limb ischemia. Since the first case of CAD involving the external iliac artery was described by Atkins and Key in 1947, approximately 300 additional cases have been reported. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this article is to report a rare vascular disorder, predominantly seen in young healthy men with minimal cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS: We report a rare case of cystic adventitial disease of a young policeman. To confirm the diagnosis, an ultrasonography

Significance of inflammation restricted to adventitial/periadventitial tissue on temporal artery biopsy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the characteristics and significance of inflammation restricted (RI) to the adventitial and/or periadventitial tissue on temporal artery biopsy (TAB). METHODS: We studied a retrospective cohort of 80 patients with RI, extending our earlier series of 39 patients. For comparison purposes, we collected the same data from 254 patients with transmural inflammation (TMI) and 81 TAB-negative patients. A review of the literature was also performed. RESULTS: A final diagnosis of giant cells arteritis (GCA) and/or polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) was observed in 86% of patients with

What is the source of anticontractile factor released by the pedicle of human internal thoracic artery?

OBJECTIVES: Perivascular tissue (PVT) surrounding human internal thoracic artery (ITA) releases an unidentified anticontractile factor. The exact source of perivascular tissue-derived relaxing factor (PVRF) is unknown, although the adventitia and adipose tissue have both been suggested as primary candidates, hence the name adventitia or adipocyte-derived relaxing factor (ADRF). To look for the source of ADRF, we examined the dilatory response of human ITA to PVT aliquots in their histological composition. METHODS: We studied isolated ITA segments from 20 patients subjected to coronary artery

Cystic adventitial pathology as an entity in peripheral arterial disease.

BACKGROUND: Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is a rare condition in which mucinous cyst forms within the adventitia of arteries and veins. The management of CAD still remains unclear and a wide range of imaging and treatment options has been described. The purpose of this study is to propose an update of etiology, clinical diagnosis, imaging modalities and treatment options in the setting of CAD described on arterial territory. METHODS: We performed a systematic review including studies reporting case or case series of CAD, searching across the Medline, Embase and Cochrane databases. RESULTS

Aortic disease in idiopathic retroperitoneal and mediastinal fibrosis.

In three patients with idiopathic mediastinal or retroperitoneal fibrosis, postmortem sections of the aorta showed aortitis (in one case) or extrusions of atheromatous debris into the inflamed adventitia (two cases). It is suggested that damage to the aortic wall, followed by adventitial inflammation due to allergy to a component of the atherosclerotic plaque, is one way in which this disease may develop.

Optimal Vessel Sizing and Understanding Dissections in Infrapopliteal Interventions: Data From the iDissection Below the Knee Study.

PURPOSE: To investigate if imaging with intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) yields a more accurate estimate of vessel diameter and the presence of dissections than angiography after intervention in the infrapopliteal arteries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, single-center study enrolled 20 consecutive patients (mean age 74.1±12.4 years; 12 women) with infrapopliteal disease who were treated with percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA; n=10) or orbital atherectomy (OA) followed by PTA (n=10). Nogo-B expression, in arterial intima, is impeded in the early stages of atherosclerosis in humans.

Nogo-B (Reticulon 4B) is considered to be a novel vascular marker, which may have a protective role in injury-induced neointima formation and atherosclerosis. Nogo A/B is found to be crucial for monocyte/macrophage recruitment in acute inflammation and it is expressed in CD68 + macrophages. We hypothesize that macrophage infiltration in atherosclerosis is not dependent on Nogo-B expression in arterial wall. We have assessed Nogo-B expression and macrophage accumulation in the iliac arteries of healthy organ donors and organ donors with cardiovascular risk factors. Paraffin sections of 66 iliac

Effects of chronic exposure to air pollution from Sao Paulo city on coronary of Swiss mice, from birth to adulthood.

To explore the hypothesis that air pollution promotes cardiovascular changes, Swiss mice were continuously exposed, since birth, in two open-top chambers (filtered and nonfiltered for airborne particles <or= 0.3 microm) placed 20 m from a street with heavy traffic in downtown Sao Paulo, twenty-four hours per day for four months. Fine particle (PM(2.5)) concentration was determined gravimetrically; hearts were analyzed by morphometry. There was a reduction of the PM(2.5) inside the filtered chamber (filtered = 8.61+/-0.79 microg/m(3), nonfiltered = 18.05+/-1.25 microg/m(3), p < .001). Coronary

[Structural changes in the vascular wall in vasoconstrictor and vasodilator exposures].

Noradrenaline vasoconstriction of the tail artery decreased external, internal diameters and the cross-section area of all the elements of the blood vessel wall. Papaverine vasorelaxation of the same artery increased the diameters but reduced the endothelium and adventitia areas. The data obtained suggest a close relation between the blood vessel tonus and the morphology of all the elements of the vessel wall.

Spatiotemporally programmed VEGF/IL-4 delivery via HMSNs enhances endothelialization and immune-mediated matrix remodeling in acellular vascular grafts.

Delayed endothelialization and inadequate matrix remodeling remain major obstacles in the development of small-diameter vascular grafts (SDVGs; <6 mm). To address these challenges, we developed an immunomodulatory tissue-engineered vascular graft (iTEVG) by integrating hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) with tailored mesopore sizes as delivery carriers for immunoregulatory factors. VEGF was selectively immobilized on the intimal surface, while the adventitia incorporated a sequential release system for VEGF and IL-4. VEGF exhibited rapid release (64.04 ± 4.44 % in 7 days), promotin

Spectroscopic intravascular photoacoustic imaging of lipids in atherosclerosis.

The natural history of atherosclerosis is marked by changes in the lipid biochemistry in the diseased arterial wall. As lesions become more vulnerable, different cholesterol species accumulate in the plaque. Understanding unstable atherosclerosis as a pharmacological and interventional therapeutic target requires chemically specific imaging of disease foci. In this study, we aim to image atherosclerotic plaque lipids and other vessel wall constituents with spectroscopic intravascular photoacoustics (sIVPA). sIVPA imaging can identify lipids in human coronary atherosclerotic plaque by relying o

Distribution of myofibroblast and tenascin-C in cystic adventitial disease: comparison with ganglion.

Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is a rare peripheral artery disorder which shows the development of gelatinous cysts in the adventitia. Although several theories for the pathogenesis of CAD have been postulated, the etiology of CAD remains unclear. Histological examination of three CAD cases revealed that these cyst walls were composed of fibrous tissue and lacked both epithelial and endothelial lining. The surfaces of these cysts were partially covered with spindle-shaped cells, similar to the interstitial cells within the cyst wall. A pool of mucinous material in the adventitia was evident.

Extracellular Matrix Remodeling in Vascular Disease: Defining Its Regulators and Pathological Influence.

Because of structural and cellular differences (ie, degrees of matrix abundance and cross-linking, mural cell density, and adventitia), large and medium-sized vessels, in comparison to capillaries, react in a unique manner to stimuli that induce vascular disease. A stereotypical vascular injury response is ECM (extracellular matrix) remodeling that occurs particularly in larger vessels in response to injurious stimuli, such as elevated angiotensin II, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, genetic deficiencies, inflammatory cell infiltration, or exposure to proinflammatory mediators. Even with substan

Histology of the distal dural ring.

The distal dural ring (DDR) is a conserved intracranial anatomic structure marking the boundary point at which the internal carotid artery (ICA) exits the cavernous sinus (CS) and enters the subarachnoid space. Although the CS has been well described in a range of anatomic studies, to our knowledge no prior study has analyzed the histologic relationship between the ICA and DDR. Correspondingly, our objective was to assess the relationship of the DDR to the ICA and determine whether the DDR can be dissected from the ICA and thus divided, or can only be circumferentially trimmed around the arter

Evidence to support that adventitial cysts, analogous to intraneural ganglion cysts, are also joint-connected.

Cystic adventitial disease (CAD) is a rare condition in which cyst is found within a vessel, typically producing symptoms of vascular compromise. Most commonly located in the popliteal artery near the knee, it has been reported in arteries and veins throughout the body. Its pathogenesis has been poorly understood and various surgical approaches have been recommended. We extrapolated some recent information about a similar condition, intraneural ganglion cyst affecting the deep fibular (peroneal) nerve, to the prototype, CAD of the popliteal artery. In intraneural ganglion cysts affecting the d

Segmental Arterial Mediolysis in Pigs Presenting With Renal Infarcts.

Segmental arterial mediolysis, a rare arteriopathy first reported in humans, is described in the kidneys of 36 pigs slaughtered in an abattoir in Jutland, Denmark. The kidney changes presented themselves macroscopically as one or more cortical wedge-shaped hemorrhagic or pale lesions. The arterial lesions involved the interlobar and arcuate arteries and exhibited injurious and reparative phases of development. Two types of injurious lesions occurred: (1) a tearing separation of the outer media from the adventitia with fibrin, erythrocytes, and edema fluid filling the formed space, causing coll

Differential expression and regulation of Klotho by paricalcitol in the kidney, parathyroid, and aorta of uremic rats.

Klotho plays an important role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Klotho is highly expressed in the kidney and parathyroid glands, but its presence in the vasculature is debated. Renal Klotho is decreased in CKD, but the effect of uremia on Klotho in other tissues is not defined. The effect of vitamin D receptor activator therapy in CKD on the expression of Klotho in various tissues is also in debate. In uremic rats (surgical 5/6th nephrectomy model), we compared 3 months of treatment with and without paricalcitol on Klotho immunostaining in the kidn

Resistance of the internal mammary artery to restenosis: a histomorphologic study of various porcine arteries.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Restenosis after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of the internal mammary artery (IMA) grafts is much less pronounced than in other arteries and venous grafts. The aim of the study was to test whether various arteries respond differently to dilatation. METHODS: PTA of the IMA, carotid, renal and circumflex coronary (RCx) arteries was performed in 9 pigs (balloon to artery ratio of 1:1.5). After 8 weeks, angiography was repeated and vessels prepared for histological analysis. Immunohistochemical staining was done to examine proliferative activity (Ki67) and to ident
