Phytoremediation is a kind of efficient strategy for remediating soils polluted with heavy metals. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) on the phytoremediation potential of Ricinus communis in Cd- and Zn-polluted soil. We treated the soil with SMS before growing plants and analyzed the contents, distribution of heavy metals, and response of plants after growth. Leptospermone, a β-triketone derived from Leptospermum scoparium seed oil, was evaluated as a predominantly non-competitive inhibitor of tyrosinase. Pleurocybella porrigens is a mushroom that grows widely around the temperate northern hemisphere, and was once considered edible, especially in Japan. Following a number of deaths in 2004, investigations revealed the presence of various toxins, including a lectin (PPL) that apparently survives cooking and enters the bloodstream via the stomach. We have cloned PPL and solved its structure by X-ray crystallography and cryo-EM. We report the sugar binding properties of this β-trefoil lectin, which has a novel hexameric structure.

In order to develop the tyrosinase inhibitors with potential application in food industry, a series of stilbene-hydroxypyridinone hybrids were prepared. Breakthrough invasive infections occur in immunosuppressed patients while they are receiving antifungal agents for both prophylaxis and therapy. Under such conditions, unusual fungal infections emerge. Hormographiella aspergillata is considered an uncommon human pathogen and causes devastating infections. Here, we present a case report of necrotizing pneumonia caused by H. aspergillata as a breakthrough infection in a neutropenic patient and review all previous cases of H. aspergillata infection reported in the literature.
