BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic illnesses with physical and cognitive disabilities, particularly stroke survivors with aphasia, are often not involved in design and evaluation processes. As a consequence, existing eHealth services often do not meet the needs of this group of patients, which has resulted in a digital divide.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness and user satisfaction of an electronic care and rehabilitation planning tool from the perspective of stroke survivors with aphasia. This would help us gain knowledge on how such a tool would need to be ada

BACKGROUND: Identifying suspected anterior circulation large-vessel occlusion (aLVO) strokes during emergency calls could enhance dispatch efficiency, particularly in rural areas. However, data on emergency medical dispatchers' (EMDs) ability to recognize aLVO symptoms remain limited. This simulation study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of identifying side-specific arm paresis, side-specific conjugate eye deviation (CED), and aphasia during emergency calls by instructing layperson callers to perform brief, standardized examination steps. Two communication methods were compared: (1) telephon

BACKGROUND: Experience-based co-design (EBCD) is a well-established method to engage patients, family members and healthcare professionals in the co-design of interventions. A key principle of EBCD is equal partnership. For adults with acquired communication disabilities, additional measures are required to ensure authentic, rather than tokenistic, engagement. The aim of this study was to evaluate the co-design process from the perspectives of co-designers (individuals with aphasia (impaired language/communication), family members, speech pathologists), and researchers (speech pathologists and

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: DC_TRAIN_APHASIA is an ongoing multicenter, randomized controlled trial, conducted since November 2019 under the lead of the University Medicine Greifswald (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03930121). The study seeks to determine whether adjuvant transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can increase the effectiveness of a 3‑week treatment with intensive speech-language therapy in chronic post-stroke aphasia.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Until the end of 2024, a total of 130 patients are to be included in Germany. Recruitment has been a challenge throughout the study an

BACKGROUND: Therapy guidelines recommend speech and language therapy (SLT) as the "gold standard" for aphasia treatment. Treatment intensity (i.e., ≥5 hours of SLT per week) is a key predictor of SLT outcome. The scientific evidence to support the efficacy of SLT is unsatisfactory to date given the lack of randomized controlled trials (RCT), particularly with respect to chronic aphasia (lasting for >6 months after initial stroke). This randomized waiting list-controlled multi-centre trial examines whether intensive integrative language therapy provided in routine in- and outpatient clinical se

BACKGROUND: Due to communication problems, people with primary progressive aphasia (PwPPA) are often affected in their self-image and experience a reduced quality of life (QoL). Biographic-narrative therapy is an effective approach to improve QoL in post-stroke aphasia. This study describes how PwPPA experienced their participation in the biographic-narrative intervention called Cope PPA.
METHODS: The intervention comprised a combination of five individual and seven group therapy sessions as well as the use of music and art therapy elements. Inclusion criteria were a capacity to give consent

BACKGROUNDS: Previous studies indicated inconsistent results for the treatment effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on post-stroke aphasics. The study conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate whether the rTMS with different frequencies demonstrated any effect in patients with post-stroke aphasia.
METHODS: Electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, EMBASE, and Google Scholar) were searched for articles published before July 2019. Statistical analyses were made using STATA 12.0 software. Standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were cal

INTRODUCTION: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is tested as tool for post-stroke rehabilitation in aphasia, and individualized simulations of tDCS-induced electric fields (E-fields) can guide its application. However, the accuracy of simulations is challenged by complex and variable tissue properties of stroke lesions. Here, we assessed the impact of stroke lesions on tDCS-induced E-fields realistically in terms of lesion size, shape, and conductivity.
METHODS: Structural and diffusion MRI datasets of stroke patients with aphasia (n = 13, six females, age = 38-70 years) and age-

BACKGROUND: Stroke profoundly affects quality of life (QOL), including loss of employment, reduced social activity, shrinking social networks and low mood. Dysgraphia (impaired writing) is a common symptom of aphasia yet is rarely targeted in rehabilitation. Recent technological advances might challenge this, since much communication is now conducted digitally through writing. The rehabilitation of writing may therefore help to address the wider consequences of stroke and aphasia.
AIMS: Can assistive technology (AT) training for people with dysgraphia: (1) improve written output, and are gain

In the field of cognitive neuropsychology of phonological short-term memory (pSTM), a key debate surrounds the issue of how impairment on tasks deemed to tap this system imply a dissociable phonological input and output buffer system, with the implication that impairments can be fractionated across disruption to separate functional components (Nickels, Howard & Best, 1997). This study presents CT, a conduction aphasic who showed no impairment on basic auditory discrimination tasks, but had very poor nonword repetition. Clear-cut examples of such cases are very rare (see Jacquemot, Dupoux & Bac

BACKGROUND: Poststroke aphasia (PSA) significantly impairs language and cognitive functioning, yet few interventions comprehensively address both domains. This study evaluated the efficacy of an intervention combining acupuncture and computer-assisted cognitive rehabilitation using the RehaCom cognitive training system (hereinafter, ACR) on language and nonverbal cognitive function in individuals with PSA.
METHOD: A single-center randomized controlled trial was conducted at a tertiary rehabilitation hospital in Fujian Province, China. Eighty patients with PSA were randomly assigned (1:1) to e

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Accumulating evidence supports the ventral precentral gyrus (vPrCG) as the true seat of speech production instead of Broca's area, but the exact scope of language impact following damage to each remains unclear. To provide detailed causal observation, we compared the short-term and long-term effects on language function following localized resections of the dominant vPrCG and Broca's area.
METHODS: Aphasia Battery of Chinese evaluation at preoperation, 1-month, and 3-month postoperation was conducted in 40 right-handed glioma patients who underwent resection within

PURPOSE: There are few evidence-based treatments for language deficits in primary progressive aphasia (PPA). PPA treatments are often adopted from the poststroke aphasia literature. The poststroke aphasia literature has shown promising results using Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST), a behavioral therapy that focuses on improving naming by producing verbs and their arguments in phrases and sentences. Emerging research in poststroke aphasia and PPA has shown promising results pairing behavioral language therapy with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS).

PURPOSE: Long-term social support is a key protective factor for living well with chronic disabilities. Community Aphasia Groups (CAGs) provide opportunities for connection and recovery. To address service availability challenges, we developed the Hub-and-Spoke, Peer-led CAG program in which a "Hub" of clinical staff supports "Spokes"-community members with and without aphasia-to facilitate high-quality CAGs. A pilot, mixed-methods study confirmed the feasibility and acceptability of this model.

Studies on the efficacy of language treatment for multilingual people with post-stroke aphasia and its generalization to untreated languages have produced mixed results. We conducted a systematic review and a meta-analysis to examine within- and cross-language treatment effects and the variables that affect them. We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Google Scholar (February 2020; January 2023), identifying 40 studies reporting on 1573 effect sizes from 85 individuals. We synthesized effect sizes for treatment outcomes using a multi-level model to correct for multiple observations from the

PURPOSE: Characterize the profile of aphasic syndromes determined by aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) of the left middle cerebral artery (LMCA).
METHODS: An analytical, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted using a database of cognitive assessments of 193 patients with aSAH admitted to Hospital da Restauração between March 2007 and November 2009. Of these, a total of 26 patients with aSAH in the LMCA territory confirmed by digital angiography were selected. OBJECTIVE: To examine the rehabilitative effects of a combined scalp acupuncture and speech therapy (ST) protocol on language function and quality of life in individuals with motor aphasia following stroke (MAAS).
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted involving 68 individuals with MAAS who satisfied the inclusion criteria. Participants were randomly assigned to either the observation group (n=34; scalp acupuncture+ST) or the control group (n=34; sham acupuncture+ST) through a computer-generated random number table. Both groups received daily interventions, 6 times per week, ove

BACKGROUND: There is conflicting evidence regarding the benefits of intensive speech and language therapy (SLT), particularly because intensity is often confounded with total SLT provided.
AIMS: A two-centre, randomized, rater-blinded, parallel study was conducted to compare the efficacy of 100 h of SLT in a regular (RT) versus intensive (IT) treatment in sub-acute post-stroke aphasia.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: Consecutive patients with aphasia, within 3 months of a left hemisphere ischemic stroke, were randomized to IT (2 h per day × 5 days per week, 10 weeks) or RT (2 h per week × 50 weeks). E

This review focuses on six key papers published in the mid 2000 s based on work conducted in Cambridge. The first two relate to clinico-pathological studies which established that Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a relatively common cause of focal cortical syndromes, notably progressive aphasia (largely nonfluent), progressive apraxia, and posterior cortical atrophy with complex visual symptoms. Building on these findings, criteria for the progressive aphasias have been developed which define the variant associated with AD (progressive logopenic aphasia). Memory in the dementias has been a major ar
