BACKGROUND: Radiation proctitis is a complication of radiotherapy for malignant pelvic disease. Argon beam coagulation is a new and rapidly evolving technology that permits a "no-touch" electrocoagulation of diseased tissue.
METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively the records of 7 patients with prostatic and endometrial cancers treated with irrradiation (median radiation dose was 6840 cGy, range 2400 to 7200 cGy). The median time to onset of symptoms after the conclusion of radiotherapy was 20 months (range 16 to 48 months); symptoms consisted of rectal bleeding and tenesmus in all patients. The

Syringomas are benign lesions most commonly appearing around the eyelids and in malar areas, but they have also been described on other body sites. Depending on the site they may cause either aesthetic disturbance (e.g. face, neck, arms) or pruritus (e.g. vulva). This is the first report of argon laser treatment of syringoma in a patient with multiple vulvar syringomas in association with pruritus vulvae and carcinophobia.

We studied one randomly selected eye of 50 consecutive primary open-angle glaucoma patients treated with argon laser trabeculoplasty to assess response differences as functions of anterior chamber anatomy and refraction. We found no significant differences related to these variables, and thus conclude that argon laser trabeculoplasty may be performed successfully in patients with crowded angles as long as the trabecular meshwork can be visualized.

A 64-year-old man had vascular ingrowth of a surgical wound resulting in recurrent hyphema and pupillary block glaucoma three years after cataract extraction. Argon laser photocoagulation of an abnormal vessel in the inner lip of the wound resulted in complete clearing of a chronic hyphema, with a four-month follow-up. We used 500-micron laser spots of 2,000 mW and 0.5 seconds' duration to closr the vessels. This approach is recommended for its relative safety and simplicity.

The operator must become familiar with the dangers involved with argon laser photocoagulation. The hazards in the use of the argon laser slit-lamp photocoagulator derive from the same properties of the instrument that make it advantageous for the treatment of retinal vascular diseases: the wavelengths are highly absorbed by blood, and the beam can be focused to a small diameter. Of course complications can be avoided entirely by using applications so light the virtually no effect is obtained; but such an approach, although safe, cannot be therapeutic.

Primary endobronchial schwannomas are extremely rare tumors that originate from Schwann cells. We report a case of primary endobronchial schwannoma. A 44-year-old woman, without respiratory symptoms, was presented with a nodule in the left main bronchus on her chest computed tomography scan. The nodule was removed by a rigid bronchoscopy with argon plasma coagulation. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of schwannoma. There was no recurrence during her 4-month follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Distal migration is one of the common complications after insertion of a covered metallic stent. Stent repositioning or removal is not always possible in every patient. Therefore, trimming using an argon plasma coagulator (APC) may be a good alternative method to solve this problem.
