Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne viral zoonosis widely distributed in Africa, Asia and eastern Europe. Reassortment of CCHF genome segments has been shown to occur in nature. We therefore investigated the genetic relationship of southern African isolates using partial sequence data for each RNA segment, S, M and L, and comparing the tree topologies constructed using a neighbour joining method. A total of 21 southern African isolates were studied. The incongruencies which were identified in S, M and L sequence datasets involved group switching implying reassortment for 15

Unlike hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype (GT) 6, which is widely circulated in Southeast Asia and South China, GT 6 was not reported in Taiwan until 2006. GT 1b and 2a, also known as global HCV subtypes, have been reported as major GTs circulating in Taiwan. Because of improvement in genotyping kits and sequencing techniques for the subtyping of HCV, an increasing number of GT 6 subtypes have been reported, especially subtype 6a among intravenous drug users with human immunodeficiency virus infection after an outbreak since 2003. Thus, HCV GT 6 infection is regarded to be closely associated wit

BACKGROUND: The emergence of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to artemisinin and its derivatives, manifested as delayed parasite clearance following the treatment, has developed in Southeast Asia. The spread of resistance to artemisinin from Asia to Africa may be catastrophic for malaria control and elimination worldwide. Recently, mutations in the propeller domain of the Kelch 13 (k13) gene (PF3D71343700) were associated with in vitro resistance to artemisinin and with delayed clearance after artemisinin treatment in southern Asia. The aim of the study was to characterize the genetic variabil

FIGO established a Working Group on the Prevention of Unsafe Abortion in 2007 and a parallel program or "Initiative" with the same name. The initiative involved 46 FIGO member societies from seven regions: South-Southeast Asia, Eastern-Central Europe and Central Asia, North Africa and Eastern Mediterranean, Eastern-Central-Southern Africa, Western-Central Africa, Central America and Caribbean, and South America. Each society working in collaboration with the corresponding Ministry of Health and other agencies conducted a situational analysis and prepared a plan of action based on the findings.

Penicilliosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by Penicillium marneffei. The infection is most commonly seen in Southeast Asia, Southern China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. It is rarely seen among individuals of African descent. Here, we report a case of penicilliosis in an African man from Namibia who was studying in Malaysia. He presented with multiple umbilicated papules associated with cough, fever, loss of appetite, and weight. He also had urethral discharge and admitted to unprotected sexual intercourse with multiple partners. Histopathological examination of a skin papule showed the pres

Chikungunya virus, a mosquito-borne alphavirus, is endemic in Africa and Southeast Asia but is rarely reported in Taiwan. We report the case of a Taiwanese woman who developed Chikungunya fever, which was first diagnosed by a clinician rather than by fever screening at an airport. The woman presented with fever, maculopapular rash, and arthralgia, the triad for the disease, on the day she returned home after a trip to Malaysia. These symptoms are very similar to those of dengue fever, which is endemic in Southern Taiwan. Chikungunya infection was confirmed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase c

Hantaviruses are rodent-borne agents belonging to the Bunyaviridae family. These viruses, which are found throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas, are maintained by different species of rodents, in which they produce chronic, inapparent infections. Humans become infected through contact with urine, saliva or faeces from infected rodents, mainly via the aerosol route. In humans, clinical disease occurs in the form of two major syndromes: haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) or hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome mainly occurs in Europe and Asia

South Asia presents a striking nutritional paradox: populations among the world's highest fish consumers carry disproportionate cardiometabolic risk at BMI levels well below disease thresholds for European populations. Marine fish is established as cardioprotective in fatty-fish-consuming coastal populations, yet this benefit appears to break down in South Asian contexts. This commentary interrogates four interlocking mechanisms. First, aquaculture-driven species substitution has replaced n-3-rich species such as hilsa and coastal sardines with leaner farmed varieties offering only a fraction

UNLABELLED: Older women of a South Asian heritage are at higher risk of osteoporosis yet remain less likely to access healthcare services for support with osteoporosis. Our study found sociocultural and religious factors shape their decisions. Designing culturally tailored services can help South Asian older women access timely osteoporosis support.
PURPOSE: To explore South Asian older women's beliefs and experiences of living with osteoporosis, with the aim of informing health service delivery.
METHODS: Eleven older women with a self-reported diagnosis of osteoporosis were conveniently sel

AIM: Functional constipation (FC) is a prevalent paediatric condition that places a significant burden on healthcare systems and adversely impacts the quality of life of children. Despite its widespread occurrence, the underlying contributors to FC in early childhood remain inconsistently documented. Thus, the study aimed to assess the early life factors and dietary habits in the associations with FC in children aged 6-48 months.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited children undergoing routine health examinations in the City Children's Hospital. FC was diagnosed using the Rome IV cri

Perinatal mental health concerns are common and may be heightened among immigrant populations because of migration-related stressors, social isolation, stigma, language barriers, and limited access to culturally safe care. Although previous reviews have examined perinatal mental health among immigrants broadly, evidence focused specifically on South Asian immigrant women in Canada across pregnancy and the postpartum period has not been comprehensively mapped. South Asian women represent one of the largest and fastest-growing immigrant populations in Canada and may experience unique cultural, f

BACKGROUND: Post-mortem biological investigation of causes of deaths is uncommon in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). The primary objective of Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) is to determine the underlying and contributing causes of death for stillbirths and children younger than 5 years, including identification of specific pathogens and risk factors associated with mortality. We report on the role of infections, including pathogen-specific causes, in the overall causal pathway to death in neonates (aged <28 days) across CHAMPS sites in Ethiopia, Keny

The invasive urban malaria vector Anopheles stephensi threatens 126 million city dwellers in Africa. Controlling An. stephensi requires greater understanding of its origin, invasion dynamics, and insecticide resistance mechanisms. Analysis of 645 whole genomes sampled across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia supports an invasion scenario in which an initial South Asian introduction established a bridgehead population in Djibouti, which seeded distinct invasion fronts in Sudan, Ethiopia/Kenya, and Yemen. These incursions show contrasting rates and routes of spread shaped by landscape topology.

Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is one of the most severe viral zoonozes. It is prevalent throughout Africa, Asia and southern Europe. Limited availability of sequence data has hindered phylogeographic studies. The complete genomic sequence of all three segments of 14 Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever virus strains isolated from 1958-2000 in Russia, Central Asia and Africa was identified. Each genomic segment was independently subjected to continuous Bayesian phylogeographic analysis. The origin of each genomic segment was traced to Africa about 1,000-5,000 years ago. The virus was

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to conduct a temporal analysis of rheumatic heart disease (RHD) disease burden trends over a 30-year period (1991 to 2021), focusing on prevalence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in the South Asia (SA).
METHODS: In this ecological study, we analyzed data regarding burden of RHD from the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) study spanning the years 1991 to 2021 for the SA Region. Estimates of the number RHD-related prevalence, deaths, and DALYs along with age-standardized rates (ASR) per 100,000 population and 95% uncertainty intervals

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer is the fifth most common cancer globally, with about 75% of cases occurring in Asia. While chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and intestinal metaplasia (IM) are well-recognized preneoplastic gastric lesions, we determined the prevalence and temporal trend of CAG and IM in Asia over the past 50 years.
METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched PubMed, Embase, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies reporting the prevalence of CAG and IM in Asia (according to the United Nations geoscheme) published between 1970 and 2022. Heterogeneity was

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), is becoming an increasingly important public health concern in Asia, with rising incidence and prevalence reported across the region. Despite progress in global burden studies, data gaps remain in Asia due to variations in healthcare and socio-demographic factors. This study aims to address these gaps by assessing the burden of IBD across Asia from 1990 to 2023, focusing on regional trends in UC and CD.
METHOD: We utilized data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factor

GOALS: To investigate the association between atrophy severity and antiparietal cell antibody (APCA) levels in South and Southeast Asia.
BACKGROUND: APCA is an autoantibody that damages gastric parietal cells; autoimmune gastritis (AIG) is a chronic gastric inflammatory disease related to APCA and severe predominant corpus atrophy. Although a positive APCA result is a key clinical diagnostic tool for AIG, its rates vary widely among ethnic groups, and its exact relationship with AIG and predominant corpus atrophy remains unclear.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is a broadly distributed tick-borne disease and is caused by the arthropod-borne Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Hyalomma ticks have been associated with the circulation of the virus in natural foci and in laboratory experiments. One of the main species, Hyalomma rufipes, is originally distributed in Africa. However, anthropogenic activities, bird migration, and domestic animal movement, could break the natural barriers that prevent its spread out of its natural area of colonization. This study explored the potential suitable areas for H. rufipes
