Chlamydia prevalence and associated behaviours among female sex workers in Vanuatu: results from an integrated bio-behavioural survey, 2011.

There is insufficient data on sexually transmitted infections (STI) and related behaviours among key populations, including female sex workers (FSW), in the Pacific region. Using respondent driven sampling, we conducted an integrated bio-behavioural survey with FSW in Vanuatu (aged ≥18 years) to investigate risk behaviours associations with Chlamydia trachomatis (CT). Weighted population estimates and correlates of CT infection were calculated. Among 149 FSW, prevalence of CT was 36 % (95 % CI 26-48 %). Few FSW reported consistent condom use with recent transactional sex partners (TSP) (8 %; 9

Family Factors and HIV-Related Risk Behaviors Among Adolescent Sexual Minority Males in Three United States Cities, 2015.

Purpose: We examined the relationship between family factors and HIV-related sexual risk behaviors among adolescent sexual minority males (ASMM) who are affected disproportionately by HIV. Methods: We analyzed results from the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance among Young Men Who Have Sex with Men. Adolescent males ages 13-18 who identified as gay or bisexual, or who reported attraction to or sex with males were interviewed in 2015 in Chicago, New York City, and Philadelphia. Separate log-linked Poisson regression models were used to estimate associations between family factors and sexual r

Subjective cognitive decline prevalence, impacts, and discussions with healthcare professionals among middle-aged and older women veterans and non-veterans, 2021-2022.

OBJECTIVES: Veterans may be at higher risk of cognitive decline due to military-related risk factors (e.g. traumatic brain injury). We compared the prevalence and impacts of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) among veteran and non-veteran women. METHOD: Using data from the 2021-2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Cognitive Decline module in 29 jurisdictions, women ≥45 years reporting increased memory problems or confusion over the past year were classified as having SCD. We calculated weighted estimates among 1,905 women veterans (n = 268 with SCD) and 66,880 women non-veterans (n

Increased use of colorectal cancer tests--United States, 2002 and 2004.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death (after lung/bronchus cancer) in the United States. In 2002, a total of 139,534 adults in the United States had colorectal cancer diagnosed, and 56,603 died. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and other national organizations recommend that adults aged >/=50 years be screened for colorectal cancer with one or more of the following tests: fecal occult blood testing (FOBT) every year, sigmoidoscopy or double-contrast barium enema every 5 years, or colonoscopy every 10 years. To estimate current rates of use of colorectal c

Thursday's child: the role of adverse childhood experiences in explaining mental health disparities among lesbian, gay, and bisexual U.S. adults.

This study examined how adverse childhood experiences (ACE) may explain disparities in poor mental health between lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB), and heterosexual adults. Data are from three US states' 2010 behavioral risk factor surveillance system surveys (n = 20,060) that included sexual orientation, ACE inventory, and mental distress. LGB status was significantly associated with mental distress (OR = 1.85 [1.14-3.02]). Once incorporating ACE scores into the multiple regression analysis, LGB status was no longer associated with mental distress (OR = 1.28 [0.76-2.16]). The results corrobor

Supply and demand effects between tobacco retailer density and smoking prevalence.

OBJECTIVE: Places with more tobacco retailers have higher smoking prevalence levels, but whether this is because retailers locate where people who smoke live or whether tobacco availability prompts tobacco use is unknown. In this study, we compare the role of consumer demand with that of tobacco supply in longitudinal, area-based associations of tobacco retailer density with smoking prevalence. METHODS: We merged annual adult smoking prevalence estimates derived from the USA Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System data with annual county estimates of tobacco retailer density calculated fr

Comments on a Misguided Focus on Screening Rates.

Hernandez's analysis of Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data concludes that adults of 78 to 79 years of age, who are excluded from Medicare coverage of lung cancer screening, have the highest uptake (32%) for lung cancer screening. They join other studies based on BRFSS that report much higher uptake than previous studies based on other sources. Potential social desirability, recall, and age-related biases and respondent clinical confusion in BRFSS and other sources lead us to question Hernandez's conclusions and the usefulness of uptake measures. Measuring the portion of ne

Depression and Cost-Related Health Care Utilization Among Persons with Diabetes.

The presence of depression among people with diabetes can substantially increase health care costs and reduce health care utilization. This study aimed at further elucidating the factors underlying the relationship between depressive disorders and health care utilization among people with diabetes. Data were obtained from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, and the sample was limited to people with diabetes (n = 22,642). The independent variable was assessed by a lifetime diagnosis of depressive disorder, including depression, major depression, dysthymia, or minor depression.

Subjective Cognitive Decline Among Adults Aged ≥45 Years - United States, 2015-2016.

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is the self-reported experience of worsening or more frequent confusion or memory loss within the previous 12 months (1,2) and one of the earliest noticeable symptoms of Alzheimer's disease (Alzheimer's), a fatal form of dementia (i.e., a decline in mental abilities severe enough to interfere with everyday life) (1). Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, although not all memory loss results from Alzheimer's (3). To examine SCD, CDC analyzed combined data from the 2015 and 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys. Overall, 11.

Sunburn prevalence among adults--United States, 1999, 2003, and 2004.

Episodic acute overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (i.e., sunburn) is an important risk factor for two types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Melanoma is the most lethal type of skin cancer. In 2003, a total of 45,625 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in the United States, and 7,818 persons died from the disease. A meta-analysis of 57 studies indicated that the relative risk for melanoma among persons with sunburn history compared with those without sunburn history was 2.03 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.73-2.37). Monitoring sunburn prevalence with population-bas

Alcohol use among pregnant and nonpregnant women of childbearing age - United States, 1991-2005.

Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is a risk factor for poor birth outcomes, including fetal alcohol syndrome, birth defects, and low birth weight. In the United States, the prevalence of fetal alcohol syndrome is estimated at 0.5-2.0 cases per 1,000 births, but other fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) are believed to occur approximately three times as often as fetal alcohol syndrome. The 2005 U.S. Surgeon General's advisory on alcohol use in pregnancy, advises women who are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant to abstain from using alcohol. Binge drinking is particularly harmful

Temporal trends in cardiovascular disease and diabetes prevalence in the United States: assessing compression versus expansion.

Recent trends from Western countries indicate a stagnation of life expectancy gains, raising questions about the mechanisms that sustain healthy aging and morbidity compression. In this study, we focus on trends in cardiovascular diseases and diabetes and their determinants in the United States, as relevant contributors to potential morbidity compression and, consequently, to increases in healthy life expectancy. Using data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 1990 to 2023, we apply a pseudo-panel approach to analyze morbidity patterns across birth cohorts in the United Sta

Risks Factors and Treatment Use Related to Infertility and Impaired Fecundity Among Reproductive-Aged Women.

INTRODUCTION: Population-level data on infertility and impaired fecundity are sparse. We explored the use of self-reported information provided by reproductive-aged women participating in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three out of 12 questions on reproductive history, family planning, and infertility that seven states included in the 2013 BRFSS were used for this study. In addition to descriptive statistics, we used multinomial logistic regression to identify factors associated with ever experiencing
