Dendrimers as Pharmaceutical Excipients: Synthesis, Properties, Toxicity and Biomedical Applications.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) in the United States of America, define excipient as the constituents of the pharmaceutical form other than the active ingredient, i.e., any component that is intended to furnish pharmacological activity. Although dendrimers do not have a pharmacopoeia monograph and, therefore, cannot be recognized as a pharmaceutical excipient, these nanostructures have received enormous attention from researchers. Due to their unique properties, like the nanoscale uniform size, a high degree of branching, polyvalency, aqu

Nanotechnology for photodynamic therapy: a perspective from the Laboratory of Dr. Michael R. Hamblin in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

The research interests of the Hamblin Laboratory are broadly centered on the use of different kinds of light to treat many different diseases. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses the combination of dyes with visible light to produce reactive oxygen species and kill bacteria, cancer cells and destroy unwanted tissue. Likewise, UV light is also good at killing especially pathogens. By contrast, red or near-infrared light can have the opposite effect, to act to preserve tissue from dying and can stimulate healing and regeneration. In all these applications, nanotechnology is having an ever-growing im

Balancing biomedical and ecological perspectives in research framing of liver fluke and cholangiocarcinoma in NE Thailand.

This review examines the association of Asian liver flukes and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) from the standpoint of two contrasting research perspectives: that aligned with the biomedical model predominantly employed to date; and, that aligned with ecological (and evolutionary) thinking increasingly being used to frame research questions that address this association in Northeast Thailand. An examination of the assumptions that underlie most of this research, requisite of evidence-based health research, shows how a broadened research frame that incorporates 'ecologic' perspectives provides alternat

Improved anticoagulation of titanium by sequential immobilization of oligo(ethylene glycol) and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine.

Titanium and its alloys have been widely used for blood-contacting biomedical devices; however, their blood compatibility needs to be improved. In this study, titanium surface was modified by sequential immobilization of oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) to improve its anticoagulation. Water contact angle results showed an excellent hydrophilic surface after the immobilization. Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) confirmed that OEG and MPC were successfully immobilized on titanium surface. Static platelet

Electromagnetohydrodynamic pulsatile blood flow of Casson nanofluid with stenosis porous artery under periodic body acceleration and slip effects: A Reynolds and Vogel viscosity models.

Nanofluid technology is increasingly relevant in biomedical engineering for enhancing diagnostics and targeted therapies. This study examines the electromagnetohydrodynamic behavior of an Au-blood nanofluid through a tapered, porous, stenosed artery. Blood is modeled as a non-Newtonian Casson fluid with temperature-dependent viscosity, described using Reynolds' and Vogel's models. The governing equations, which incorporate slip, body acceleration, electro-osmosis, magnetic effects, and nanoparticle suspension, are solved using a finite difference scheme and validated against benchmark studies.

Dyads of Au nanoparticles and carbon nanodots confined in plasmonic nanoslits for fluorescence enhancement.

Considerable efforts have been made to enhance the fluorescence of carbon nanodots (CNDs) through surface engineering or functionalization. However, these methods often alter the intrinsic properties of the CNDs. Although only a few studies have reported such plasmonic enhancement for CNDs, the rational engineering of plasmonic platforms to modulate light-matter interactions has become a powerful alternative for enhancing emitter performance without altering the emitter. Herein, we offer a simple strategy in which CNDs and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are first hybridized and then immobilized wi

A future 'rodentopia'? Imagining a good life for rats and mice used in research (and the humans who work with them).

This invited perspective imagines 2066, this journal's centennial. Building on current understandings of rodent cognition, affect and welfare needs, we envision a world with dramatically altered societal attitudes toward rats and mice: widely kept as companion animals (pets), they are valued as intelligent, sociable beings. Scientific validity, animal welfare and human welfare are also considered inseparable priorities, further transforming biomedical animal-use. Within this context, animal-based research now involves two complementary models. Laboratory research persists, under conditions rad
