Occurrence of acute large and edematous callosal lesions in neuromyelitis optica.

BACKGROUND: The corpus callosum is commonly involved in multiple sclerosis (MS), but the characteristics of callosal lesions in neuromyelitis optica (NMO) are unknown.ObjectiveTo reveal the features of callosal lesions in NMO in comparison to MS. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and the brain magnetic resonance imaging films of 56 patients with MS and 22 patients with NMO. RESULTS: In MS, 36 (64.3%) of 56 patients had callosal lesions, but only four patients had acute lesions. All such acute lesions were small, isolated and non-edematous, and the intensity was homoton

Neuroplasticity in human callosal dysgenesis: a diffusion tensor imaging study.

Callosal dysgenesis (CD) is observed in many neurodevelopmental conditions, but its subjacent mechanisms are unknown, despite extensive research on animals. Here we employ magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging and tractography in human CD to reveal the aberrant circuitry of these brains. We searched particularly for evidence of plasticity. Four main findings are described--1) in the presence of a callosal remnant or a hypoplastic corpus callosum (CC), fibers therein largely connect the expected neocortical regions; 2) callosal remnants and hypoplastic CCs display a fiber topography simil

Nonprogressive transgene-related callosal and hippocampal changes in PDAPP mice.

We have previously shown that homozygous PDAPP mice, a transgenic model of Alzheimer's-like amyloidosis, have abnormal corpus callosi and anterior hippocampi. Now, we investigated the extent to which these morphological abnormalities are correlated with mutant gene dose in a larger, independent, and substantially younger cohort. Homozygous and heterozygous PDAPP mice had significantly smaller callosal commissure length and anterior hippocampal area than controls. Reductions correlated with mutant APP gene dose, with homozygotes showing the greatest reduction, and were present at 2 months of ag

Callosal commissural neurons of Dab1 deficient mutant mouse, yotari.

The yotari mouse is an autosomal recessive mutant mouse, caused by mutation of disabled homolog 1 (Dab1) gene. The mutant mouse is recognized by unstable gait and tremor and by early deaths around at the time of weaning. The cytoarchitectures of cerebeller and cerebral cortices and hippocampal formation of the yotari mouse are abnormal. These malformations strikingly resemble those of reeler mouse. In the present study we examined the callosal commissural (CC) neurons of yotari, reeler and normal mice with the injection of recombinant adenovirus into the frontal area 1 (Fr1) to find some possi

The stability of compromised interhemispheric processing in callosal dysgenesis and partial commissurotomy.

The persistence and stability of selective deficits in interhemispheric processing resulting from known callosal pathology have been monitored over periods ranging from ten to thirty five years. The present study included five patients: two with complete agenesis of the corpus callosum, one with partial dysgenesis, and two with a partial section of the corpus callosum. A crossed-uncrossed difference task and four bilateral visual matching tasks were administered to these patients and to groups of normal individuals matched on age and intelligence. As expected, all of the patients showed defici

[Callosal dementia: behavioral disorders related to central and extrapontine myelinolysis].

We report the behavioral symptoms presented by a 57-year-old man as the first sign of a Marchiafava-Bignami syndrome and by a 44-year-old woman with centro and extrapontine myelinolysis. These observations define a clinical entity, that we named callosal dementia characterized by: 5) fronto-limbic signs with coarse interjections, repetitive and antisocial behavior, alternation of lack of incitation and agitation; 6) elements of a Balint syndrome (suggestive of a posterior callosal involvement), with a pseudo-hallucinated look and a gaze apraxia; 7) signs of callosal dysconnection and; signs of

Behavioral disorders in association with posterior callosal and frontal cerebral infarction.

Behavioral disorders were a prominent clinical feature after the surgical treatment of an anterior communicating artery aneurysm rupture in a 44-year-old man. Callosal apraxia was associated with an alien hand. The latter remained 1 year after surgery while diagonistic apraxia disappeared after 3 months. Other callosal signs included left agraphia, tactile anomia and auditory suppression. MRI revealed posterior callosal infarction and a right frontal infarct. The association of diagonistic apraxia and alien hand is rarely reported.

Sonographic and pathological features of callosal hypoplasia in non-ketotic hyperglycinaemia.

A boy was born at 36 weeks' gestation weighing 2450 g. Though his Apgar score was 9 at birth, by the age of 48 hours he required artificial ventilation. He was deeply unconscious with complete lack of muscle tone, and non-ketotic hyperglycinaemia associated with secondary hypoplasia of the corpus callosum was confirmed by biochemical tests. The cranial ultrasound scan features correlated well with the neuropathological findings and may be helpful in the early detection of this incurable condition.

Development of visual callosal projection in the microphthalmic stain of mice 944.

The strain of mice 944 produces a recessive microphthalmy. The microphthalmic mice were compared with phenotypically healthy animals of the same litter and with 944-mice bilaterally enucleated at 1. postnatal day (pd). Comparison was done at the 5., 10., 15. and 20. pd after lesion of the right visual cortex 24 hours before. Therefore Nissl- and Fink-Heimer-series were prepared. The results are the following: At 20. pd microphthalmic mice show both retrograde and anterograde degeneration after lesion. Enucleated and control mice produce destroyed fibres only. This evidence of callosal projecti

The pattern of callosal connections in posterior neocortex of congenitally anophthalmic rats.

In an effort to assess the innate capacity of the central visual system to specify corticocortical connectivity in the absence of retinal afferents, we examined the tangential distribution of callosal cells and terminations in posterior neocortex of congenitally anophthalmic rats. Although our results indicate that the callosal pattern is clearly anomalous in these rats, all features of the normal visual callosal pattern are recognizable in mutant rats, indicating that central visual pathways can generate many aspects of normal interhemispheric connectivity in the absence of input from the per

Proliferation of thalamic afferents in cerebral cortex altered by callosal deafferentation.

In area 41, the auditory region of rat neocortex, callosal afferents project to layers I through III and thalamic afferents project to deep layer III through IV. Thus, these two extrinsic systems of afferents project simultaneously to only a narrow lamina in mid to low layer III. For this study, this narrow region of overlap is quantitatively examined to determine the distribution of callosal and thalamic afferents by observing degenerating terminals produced by separate callosal and thalamic lesions. The results show that of all asymmetric synapses observed in the neuropil of this narrow zone

Sonographic appearance of callosal agenesis: correlation with radiologic and pathologic findings.

Sonographic features are described in six infants in whom total or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum was confirmed by either computed tomographic or pathologic examination. The six patients demonstrated a range of abnormalities involving the neuraxis as well as other systems, notably cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary. Chromosomal abnormalities were present in two patients. The sonographic features of callosal agenesis seen in these patients included: lack of characteristic acoustic interfaces to define the corpus callosum on both coronal and sagittal sonograms; increase

Structural organization of 'callosal' OBg in human corpus callosum agenesis.

The structural organization of the 'callosal' OBg was studied in Nissl and Weil stained sections of two human brains completely lacking in the corpus callosum. OBg of the normal brain contains a set of distinctive large pyramidal cells in layer III. By contrast, in the brains with absence of the corpus callosum, layer III of OBg contained a slightly reduced number of smaller pyramidal cells than normal, and the characteristic large pyramidal cells were scarsely detectable. Other layers of OBg were not definitely changed. Furthermore, 'acallosal' striate cortex revealed no specific changes. Fro

Anterior Callosal Angle: A New Marker of Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus?

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosing idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) still remains a clinical challenge. The callosal angle (CA) is a widely used neuroradiologic marker for iNPH. However, the relationship of the CA to clinical features has not been well investigated. We hypothesize that iNPH symptoms might better correlate with a variant of the CA (anterior callosal angle [ACA]). We aim to establish the validity of the ACA measurement for the diagnosis of iNPH and compare it with current radiologic parameters. METHODS: The multidisciplinary BOLOGNA PRO-HYDRO Study Group performed a retrospec

Interhemispheric Lipoma, Callosal Anomaly, and Malformations of Cortical Development: A Case Series.

Intracranial lipomas are rare congenital malformations. The most common type of intracranial lipoma is the interhemispheric lipoma, which is frequently associated with callosal anomalies such as hypogenesis or agenesis of the corpus callosum. In contrast, interhemispheric lipomas are less often accompanied with malformations of cortical development (MCD). We report magnetic resonance imaging findings of three infants with an interhemispheric lipoma, associated with a callosal anomaly, and MCD: two infants with nodular interhemispheric lipoma, agenesis of the corpus callosum, and polymicrogyria
