Quantitative study of optic nerve head capillaries in experimental optic disk pallor.

We obtained quantitative measurements of capillary numbers, areas, and diameters in atrophic (pale) and normal primate optic nerve heads. The number of capillaries per square millimeter in pale optic disks was not significantly different from that in normal optic disks. Because the loss of all nerve fibers leads to a 50% decrease in nerve head substance, capillaries must atrophy to maintain a constant relationship between capillary number and tissue volume. The mean size of individual capillaries in atrophic nerve heads was smaller than normal, leading to a decrease of more than 27% in the per

[Response of spinal cord capillaries of white rats to exposure to noise].

Changes in diameters of blood capillaries of the white rat spinal cord, peculiar changes in volume and metabolic surface of capillaries in the cervical part of the spinal cord were studied under the effect of noise (90-100 db, 2 h daily, for 2, 4 and 8 weeks). Restorative period was started in 4 and 16 weeks after the experiment was stopped. A considerable narrowing of the capillary lumen was found in the test animals comparing to the normal state. The investigations performed demonstrated that the quantitative changes in the capillary indices depended on the noise duration and were considered

The capillaries in acute and subacute multiple sclerosis plaques: a morphometric analysis.

Two patients, one with multiple sclerosis (MS) and the other with a glioma of the splenium of the corpus callosum, were biopsied with the aid of CAT. Light microscopy, histochemistry, electronmicroscopy and morphometric analysis of counts of mitochondria, dense bodies, and pinocytotic vesicles within the capillary endothelial cells was done. Examination of the MS plaque showed endothelial cell tight junctions to be closed, basal lamina to be thinned, but endothelial cell mitochondria to be the same as in a patient without MS. Pinocytotic vesicles were markedly increased in endothelial cells in

Blood flow, capillary transit times, and tissue oxygenation: the centennial of capillary recruitment.

The transport of oxygen between blood and tissue is limited by blood's capillary transit time, understood as the time available for diffusion exchange before blood returns to the heart. If all capillaries contribute equally to tissue oxygenation at all times, this physical limitation would render vasodilation and increased blood flow insufficient means to meet increased metabolic demands in the heart, muscle, and other organs. In 1920, Danish physiologist August Krogh was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his mathematical and quantitative, experimental demonstration of a so

Correlation of severity of chronic venous disease with capillary morphology assessed by capillary microscopy.

BACKGROUND: In patients with lipodermatosclerosis caused by chronic venous disease of the lower limb, the skin capillaries show proliferation and convolution. To our knowledge, no previous attempt has been made to correlate the clinical severity of venous disease based on the CEAP classification with the capillary morphology changes. The purpose of this study was to correlate the clinical severity with the capillary morphology changes in patients with chronic venous disease by using capillary microscopy and to explore the significance of atypical capillary morphology in patients with uncomplic

Determination of cyanide in microliter samples by capillary electrophoresis and in-capillary enzymatic reaction with rhodanese.

This paper describes a method for the determination of cyanide using in-capillary enzymatic reaction with rhodanese. Poorly absorbing cyanide is in rhodanese reaction transformed into highly absorbing thiocyanate that is further separated by capillary electrophoresis (CE) and determined spectrophotometrically at 200 nm. Cyanide is thus estimated indirectly from the result of thiocyanate quantification and moreover, it can be easily determined with sufficient sensitivity by means of CE apparatus equipped with common UV detector. The linear detection range for concentration versus peak area for

A drying step in the protocol to pack capillary columns by centripetal forces for capillary electrochromatography.

Capillary columns have been packed for capillary electrochromatography (CEC) using centripetal forces. The packed columns were maintained under wet conditions or they were dried with nitrogen gas prior to forming the retaining frits. Upon fabrication of the retaining frits, the dried columns were resolvated with the mobile phase. The performance of the columns was evaluated to determine the effect of the drying step during the packing procedure. The columns submitted to the drying step showed improved separation efficiencies and stronger retention characteristics than those kept under wet cond

Improved capillary electrophoresis frontal analysis by dynamically coating the capillary with polyelectrolyte multilayers.

An improved CE-FA method using a polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEML) coated capillary is described. The coating was simply created by alternatively flushing the capillary with positively charged polyelectrolyte polybrene (HDB) and negatively charged polyelectrolyte dextran sulfate (DS). Human serum albumin (HSA) and 6 drugs were selected as an experimental model to evaluate such an improvement. The PEML coating was demonstrated to effectively reduce the protein adsorption on the capillary wall. Compared with the uncoated capillary, the repeatability (RSD%) of the EOF mobility and the plateau hei

Effectiveness of dynamic phototherapy in the management of telangiectatic capillaries: A case series.

PurposeTelangiectatic capillaries (TelCaps) are large capillary microaneurysms that can be found in diabetic patients. Focal laser photocoagulation is the standard treatment for these lesions. In case of a lesion too close to the fovea, there is a risk of central scotoma and conventional laser should not be used. In this case, dynamic phototherapy (PDT) can be discussed.Case reportTwo patients with perifoveal TelCaps associated with diabetic macular edema were treated with PDT. There was persistent central macular edema in spite of a well-executed treatment with intravitreal injections (IVT).

Mean pore diameters of 3D printed micro-capillaries using the matrix pencil method.

The matrix pencil method (MPM) is an approach for quantitative analysis of the multi-exponential time-domain signals from relaxation and diffusion NMR experiments. In contrast to other signal processing methods, MPM relies on solving the generalized eigenvalue problem of a so-called matrix pencil, resulting in discrete values representing the different relaxation species. In this work, the methodology is extended from relaxation experiments towards assessment of NMR self-diffusion studies in micro-porous media on a length scale suitable for determining pore sizes from signal decays. For this,

Active immunotherapy reduces NOTCH3 deposition in brain capillaries in a CADASIL mouse model.

Cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) is the most common monogenic form of familial small vessel disease; no preventive or curative therapy is available. CADASIL is caused by mutations in the NOTCH3 gene, resulting in a mutated NOTCH3 receptor, with aggregation of the NOTCH3 extracellular domain (ECD) around vascular smooth muscle cells. In this study, we have developed a novel active immunization therapy specifically targeting CADASIL-like aggregated NOTCH3 ECD. Immunizing CADASIL TgN3R182C150 mice with aggregates composed of CADA

Amyloid β oligomers constrict human capillaries in Alzheimer's disease via signaling to pericytes.

Cerebral blood flow is reduced early in the onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Because most of the vascular resistance within the brain is in capillaries, this could reflect dysfunction of contractile pericytes on capillary walls. We used live and rapidly fixed biopsied human tissue to establish disease relevance, and rodent experiments to define mechanism. We found that in humans with cognitive decline, amyloid β (Aβ) constricts brain capillaries at pericyte locations. This was caused by Aβ generating reactive oxygen species, which evoked the release of endothelin-1 (ET) that activated pericy

Early Blood-Brain Barrier Disruption in Ischemic Stroke Initiates Multifocally Around Capillaries/Venules.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Detection and localization of the early phase of blood-brain barrier disruption (BBBD) in vivo during cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury remain a major challenge but may be a relevant outcome parameter in stroke. METHODS: We studied early BBBD in mice after transient middle cerebral artery occlusion by multimodal, high-field (9.4T) in vivo magnetic resonance imaging, including the contrast agent gadofluorineM as an albumin-binding tracer. GadofluorineM contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging was performed to determine BBBD at 2, 6, and 24 hours after reperfusion

An innovative approach to molecularly imprinted capillaries for polar templates by grafting polymerization.

Molecularly imprinted polymers have been successfully used as selective stationary phases in capillary electrophoresis. Notwithstanding, this technique suffers from several drawbacks as the loss of molecular recognition properties in aqueous media and the lack of feasibility for imprinted systems directed towards highly polar templates soluble in aqueous environments only. Thus, the preparation of imprinted polymers for highly polar, water-soluble analytes, represents a challenge. In this work, we present an innovative approach to overcome these drawbacks. It is based on a surface molecular im

A fractal analysis of the radial distribution of bronchial capillaries around large airways.

We analyzed published measurements of the bronchial circulation and airway wall (Anderson JC, Bernard SL, Luchtel DL, Babb AL, and Hlastala MP. Respir Physiol Neurobiol 132: 329-339, 2002) and determined that the radial distribution of bronchial capillary cross-sectional area was fractal. We limited our analysis to bronchial capillaries, diameter < or =10 mum, that resided between the epithelial basement membrane and adventitia-alveolar boundary, the airway wall tissue. Thirteen different radial distributions of capillary-to-tissue area were constructed simply by changing the number of annuli
