Long-term results of trypan blue dye irrigation in the capsular bag to prevent posterior capsule opacification: A randomized trial.

PURPOSE: To study the effect of capsular bag irrigation of trypan blue dye (0.06%) on posterior capsular opacification (PCO) in eyes undergoing phacoemulsification. METHODS: This was a randomized, trial conducted at a tertiary eye care center in central India. The study included 50 patients (100 eyes) with senile cataracts who were scheduled for phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and were willing to undergo bilateral cataract surgery. One eye of each patient was randomized to one of two groups. The dye group received 0.2 ml of trypan blue injected in the capsular bag

The Royal College of Ophthalmologists' National Ophthalmology Database study of cataract surgery: Report 9, Risk factors for posterior capsule opacification.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Posterior Capsule Opacification (PCO) is the most common long-term post-operative adverse occurrence after cataract surgery often requiring treatment with YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. This study aimed to identify potential risk factors, known at the time of cataract surgery, that influence the development of PCO. SUBJECT/METHODS: A retrospective study of publicly funded cataract surgery from The Royal College of Ophthalmologists' National Ophthalmology Database. Eligible for analysis were 500,872 cataract operations performed in 41 participating centres. RESULTS: T

Impact of Age-Related Changes in Lens Shape on the Increased Risk of Posterior Capsule Opacification Observed in Pediatric Cataract Patients.

PURPOSE: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) rates are higher in young cataract patients compared to adults, a phenomenon attributed to a higher proliferative potential of young lens epithelial cells (LECs). This study investigates the hypothesis that implanting standard (adult-sized) intraocular lenses (IOLs) in pediatric patients, whose lenses are smaller and more spherical, results in a low contact between the IOL and the posterior lens capsule (PLC), thus contributing to elevated pediatric PCO rates. METHODS: Simulated PLCs (sPLC) modeling the size and curvatures of human lenses of eigh

Comparison of Bimatoprost 0.03% and Brimonidine 0.2% in Managing Intraocular Pressure Elevation Following Nd: YAG Laser Capsulotomy for Posterior Capsule Opacification.

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is the most common cause of vision reduction following successful cataract surgery. It is a dynamic process caused by the migration and proliferation of residual lens epithelial cells on the posterior capsule, leading to visual impairment. The standard treatment for PCO is neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd: YAG) laser capsulotomy. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of Bimatoprost 0.03% and Brimonidine 0.2% in preventing intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation post-Nd: YAG laser capsulotomy. Complete Blood Cell Count-Derived Inflammation Biomarkers and the Need for Laser Capsulotomy Due to Posterior Capsule Opacification Following Cataract Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation plays a significant role in the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of lens epithelial cells after cataract surgery, clinically manifested as posterior capsule opacification (PCO). This condition is typically treated with neodymium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy. Our objective is to evaluate the association between blood-derived inflammatory markers and the development of clinically significant PCO necessitating treatment with laser capsulotomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of charts for all patients who und

Evaluation of posterior capsule opacification of the Alcon Clareon IOL vs the Alcon Acrysof IOL using a human capsular bag model.

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after cataract surgery is influenced by intraocular lens (IOL) design and material. The following is an ex vivo comparison of PCO between the Clareon vs. the AcrySof IOL in human capsular bags. METHODS: Twenty cadaver capsular bags from 10 human donors were used, with the novel hydrophobic IOL (Clareon, CNA0T0) being implanted in one eye and the other eye of the same donor receiving the AcrySof IOL (SN60WF) following phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Five capsular bags of 3 donors served as controls without IOL. Cellular growth of lens epi

PURPOSE: To find a way to prevent or significantly reduce posterior capsule opacification (PCO) with modern phacoemulsification and in-the-bag intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology and Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy, Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg, Germany. METHODS: We evaluated the effects of an IOL-bound sustained drug delivery system (SDDS) consisting of the carrier substance poly-DL-lactid and the drug daunorubicin or indomethacin. Two-dimensional ultrathin Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets coated intraocular lens for synergistic photothermal and NIR-controllable rapamycin releasing therapy against posterior capsule opacification.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is one of the most frequent late-onset complications after cataract surgery. Several kinds of drug-eluting intraocular lenses (IOL) were designed for sustainable drug release to suppress ocular inflammation, the proliferation of lens epithelial cells (LECs) and the development of PCO after cataract surgery. Despite previous advances in this field, the drug-loaded IOLs were limited in ocular toxicity, insufficient drug-loading capacity, and short release time. To prevent PCO and to address these drawbacks, a novel drug-loaded IOL (Rapa@Ti3C2-IOL), prepared

Expression of Dominant Negative K6W-Ubiquitin in the Lens Epithelium via an Adenoviral Vector Delays Posterior Capsule Opacification in a Rabbit Model.

PURPOSE: Ubiquitin is involved in cell proliferation and differentiation, and the objective of this study is to investigate the potential of dominant negative Ubiquitin (Ub) with a lysine to tryptophan mutation at the 6 position (K6W) through an adenoviral expression vector in the prevention of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) in a rabbit PCO model. METHODS: Recombinant dominant negative K6W-Ub adenovirus (RAd-K6W-Ub) with green fluorescent protein (RAd-K6W-Ub/GFP) and RAd-GFP viruses (control) were generated with QBI-HEK 293A cells. An in vitro evaluation of the Anew Zephyr open-bag IOL in the prevention of posterior capsule opacification using a human capsular bag model.

PURPOSE: During cataract surgery an IOL is placed within the capsular bag. Clinical studies show that IOLs with a square edge profile and complete contact between the IOL and the anterior capsule (AC) are currently the best way to prevent posterior capsule opacification (PCO). This has been challenged by recent clinical and experimental observations, which suggest that if the capsular bag is kept open with separation of contact between the AC and posterior capsule (PC) by an "open-bag device" PCO is dramatically reduced. Therefore, the current study set out to evaluate the putative merits of a

Presumed Capsular-Bag-Origin Endophthalmitis following Anterior Vitrectomy for Posterior Capsule Opacification in a Patient with Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic postoperative endophthalmitis is a rare but serious complication following intraocular surgery. We report a unique case of presumed capsular-bag-origin endophthalmitis that developed after anterior vitrectomy for posterior capsule opacification in a patient with proliferative diabetic retinopathy. CASE PRESENTATION: A patient with proliferative diabetic retinopathy underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery, followed by anterior vitrectomy for posterior capsule opacification. One month later, the patient experienced a marked decrease in visual acuity accompanied by dense v
