Ventricular volume overload alters cardiac output distribution in rats during exercise.

A rat model for chronic left ventricular volume overload (a-v fistula, 2 mo) was used to test the effects of acute exhaustive treadmill exercise (EX) (5 min, 70 ft/min, 0 degrees grade) on cardiocirculatory hemodynamics and cardiac output (CO) distribution during heart failure (HF). Control (C) and HF rats were studied at rest (R) and during the last minute of EX. Heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and left ventricular end-diastolic (LVEDP) pressure were recorded and CO, blood flow (BF) to various regions, and total CO distribution were determined by the radioactive microsphere tec

Comparison of cardiac output and cardiac index values measured by critical care echocardiography with the values measured by pulse index continuous cardiac output (PiCCO) in the pediatric intensive care unit:a preliminary study.

BACKGROUND: Planning optimal fluid and inotrope-vasopressor-inodilator therapy is essential in critically ill children. Pulse index Contour Cardiac Output (PiCCO) monitoring is an invasive, hemodynamic monitor that provides parameter measurements such as cardiac output (CO), cardiac index (CI). Use of ultrasonography and critical care echocardiography by the pediatric intensivists has increased in recent years. In the hands of an experienced pediatric intensivist, critical echocardiography can accurately measure both CO and CI. Our objective in this study is to compare the CO and CI values mea

Association between In-hospital Mortality and Low Cardiac Output Syndrome with Morning versus Afternoon Cardiac Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Recent work suggests that having aortic valve surgery in the morning increases risk for cardiac-related complications. This study therefore explored whether mortality and cardiac complications, specifically low cardiac output syndrome, differ for morning and afternoon cardiac surgeries. METHODS: The study included adults who had aortic and/or mitral valve repair/replacement and/or coronary artery bypass grafting from 2011 to 2018. The components of the in-hospital composite outcome were in-hospital mortality and low cardiac output syndrome, defined by requirement for at least two

Reconsideration of heart rate-cardiac output relationships and resting cardiac function in patients with brady-arrhythmias.

Different types of heart rate (HR)-cardiac output (COP) relationships were compared with their clinical features and hemodynamic findings in 56 patients with brady-arrhythmias (BA). HR was raised by increments of 10 beats per minute (bpm) at 3 min intervals, from spontaneous rates to 100 or 110 bpm by right ventricular pacing. Cardiac and left ventricular (LV) functions at BA were evaluated by intra-cardiac pressures, COP measured by the thermo-dilution method and echocardiographic data. HR-COP relationships were divided into the following 3 types: 24 patients of flat (F), 18 of peaked (P) and

Prediction of fluid responsiveness using a non-invasive cardiac output monitor in children undergoing cardiac surgery.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the ability of a non-invasive cardiac output monitoring device (NICOM) to predict fluid responsiveness in paediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery. METHODS: Children aged <5 yr undergoing congenital heart surgery were included. Once the sternum had been closed after repair of the congenital heart defect, 10 ml kg(-1) colloid solution was administered for volume expansion. Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) was performed to measure stroke volume (SV) and respiratory variation in aortic blood flow peak velocity (ΔV(peak)) before and after volume expan

Validation of a noninvasive cardiac output monitor in maternal cardiac disease: comparison of NICOM and transthoracic echocardiogram.

BACKGROUND: The physiological changes to the cardiovascular system during pregnancy are considerable and are more pronounced in those with cardiac disease. In the general population, noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring is a valid alternative to pulmonary artery catheterization, which poses risk in the pregnant population. There is limited data on noninvasive cardiac output monitoring in pregnancy as an alternative to pulmonary artery catheterization. OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare transthoracic echocardiography with a noninvasive cardiac output monitor (NICOM, Cheetah Medical) in pregnant pat

An improved noninvasive method for measurement of cardiac output and evaluation of left-sided cardiac valve incompetence.

A time-saving method was developed to label red blood cells in vitro with 99mTc while avoiding centrifugation. After tin incubation, extracellular tin was oxidized by sodium hypochlorite, and EDTA was added for stabilizing the complex prior to 99mTc incubation. Labeling yields were 95%, and in vivo decay showed a high stability with a mean biologic half-life of eleven hours. The first-passage radionuclide technique for determination of cardiac output using the above-mentioned tracer was evaluated by using the left ventricle as area-of-interest with individual background correction after comple

Cardiac power output is associated with cardiovascular related mortality in the ICU in post-cardiac arrest patients.

AIM: Although brain injury is the main determinant of poor outcome following cardiac arrest (CA), cardiovascular failure is the leading cause of death within the first days after CA. However, it remains unclear which hemodynamic parameter is most suitable for its early recognition. We investigated the association of cardiac power output (CPO) with early mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) after CA and with mortality related to post-CA cardiovascular failure. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of adult comatose survivors of CA admitted to the ICU of a University Hospital. Exclusion criteria we

Statistical Analysis and Reporting of Cardiac Output Method Comparison Studies (COMPARE) Statement.

Cardiac output is a key cardiovascular variable quantifying global blood flow. The measurement performance of cardiac output monitoring methods is investigated in validation studies, which are method comparison studies determining the agreement between cardiac output values measured with a test method and those measured with a reference method. The StatistiCal analysis and repOrting of cardiac output Method comPARison studiEs (COMPARE) statement provides a framework for designing, performing, and reporting cardiac output method comparison studies and includes a checklist of 29 items that are e

Hepatic Arteriovenous Malformation in a Preterm Infant With High-Output Cardiac Failure.

Congenital hepatic arteriovenous malformations (HAVM) are rare and serious with a known high mortality rate. They are mostly described in the term population and, if symptomatic, present with early-onset congestive heart failure. To our knowledge, there have been no published cases of an affected very preterm infant. Prenatal diagnosis and preprocedural planning are paramount in these critically ill infants. Strategies for management of HAVM differ depending on the size of both the infant and HAVM as well as severity of symptoms. Management may include supportive pharmacologic therapy, transca

Attenuating intrathoracic pressure swings decreases cardiac output at different intensities of exercise.

Intrathoracic pressure (ITP) swings that permit spontaneous ventilation have physiological implications for the heart. We sought to determine the effect of respiration on cardiac output ( Q ̇ $\dot Q$ ) during semi-supine cycle exercise using a proportional assist ventilator to minimize ITP changes and lower the work of breathing (Wb ). Twenty-four participants (12 females) completed three exercise trials at 30%, 60% and 80% peak power (Wmax ) with unloaded (using a proportional assist ventilator, PAV) and spontaneous breathing. Intrathoracic and intraabdominal pressures were measured with b

Capnodynamics - noninvasive cardiac output and mixed venous oxygen saturation monitoring in children.

Hemodynamic monitoring in children is challenging for many reasons. Technical limitations in combination with insufficient validation against reference methods, makes reliable monitoring systems difficult to establish. Since recent studies have highlighted perioperative cardiovascular stability as an important factor for patient outcome in pediatrics, the need for accurate hemodynamic monitoring methods in children is obvious. The development of mathematical processing of fast response mainstream capnography signals, has allowed for the development of capnodynamic hemodynamic monitoring. By in
