BACKGROUND: Tick bites and tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are a worldwide concern, with growing evidence of an ongoing spread and emergence of new cases. This study applied a participatory citizen science across Spain and Portugal to gather public perspectives on the impact of tick bites, the presence of TBDs and a potential connection with the α-Gal syndrome (AGS).
METHODS: Data collected from the questionnaire (380 participants) was geographically represented using QGIS Geographic Information System and fitted into multiple generalized linear models (GLMs). Statistical analysis identified facto

Noninvasive approaches are increasingly reshaping parasite and disease surveillance by reducing stress and harm to hosts while expanding opportunities for ecological and epidemiological research. In this opinion article, we discuss these emerging approaches, which rely on molecular, citizen-science, and computational methods, for monitoring parasites, vectors, and hosts. These tools can improve spatial and temporal coverage, support the surveillance of rare or threatened hosts and parasites, and contribute to the understanding of transmission pathways and disease dynamics. However, their relia

Background: Vaccine hesitancy has traditionally been understood as a multifactorial phenomenon shaped by individual beliefs, risk perceptions, and access barriers. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally transformed the relationship between citizens, science, and public institutions, raising the question of whether vaccine hesitancy has evolved into a broader form of institutional distrust. Objective: This narrative review synthesizes evidence on vaccine confidence, trust dynamics, misinformation, and post-pandemic attitudes to propose a new conceptual framework, i.e., institutional h

Defining spatial and temporal occurrences of triatomine vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease, in the US is critical for public health protection. Through a citizen science program and field collections from 2012 to 2016, we collected 3,215 triatomines, mainly from Texas. Using morphological and molecular approaches, we identified seven Triatoma species and report sex, length, and blood engorgement status. Many citizen-collected triatomines (92.9%) were encountered indoors, in peridomestic settings, or in dog kennels and represent spillover transmission risk of T. cruzi to

Interactions between humans and ticks are often measured indirectly, using surveillance of tick population abundance and pathogen prevalence, or reported human disease data. We used data garnered as part of a free national citizen science research effort to describe actual human exposures to ticks in California. Human-biting ticks (n = 1,905) submitted for identification were predominantly western black-legged ticks (Ixodes pacificus) (68%), American dog ticks (Dermacentor variabilis) (24%), and Pacific Coast ticks (Dermacentor occidentalis) (7%). Tick exposure occurred predominantly during re

Background: Here, we report the isolation and identification of a Paenibacillus polymyxa strain from the citizen science project, Swab and Send. P. polymyxa is well known for its production of polymyxin E (colistin), and polymyxin B. Polymyxins are ranked in the highest-priority critically important antimicrobial classification by the WHO and are of particular importance for treating Gram-negative multi-drug-resistant pathogens. Due to their clinical use, most of the literature focusses on these polymyxin variants, and there is sparse genetic research on other polymyxin variants. Methods: The

UNLABELLED: Community science (also often referred to as citizen science) provides a unique opportunity to address questions beyond the scope of other research methods whilst simultaneously engaging communities in the scientific process. This leads to broad educational benefits, empowers people, and can increase public awareness of societally relevant issues such as the biodiversity crisis. As such, community science has become a favourable framework for researching alien species where data on the presence, absence, abundance, phenology, and impact of species is important in informing manageme

Developments in digital image acquisition technologies and citizen science lead to more water color observations and broader public participation in environmental monitoring. However, the implications of the use of these simple water color indices for water quality assessment have not yet been fully evaluated. In this paper, we build a low-cost digital camera colorimetry setup to investigate quantitative relationships between water color indices and concentrations of optically active constituents (OACs). As proxies for colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and phytoplankton, humic acid and a

Expansion of anthropogenic noise and night lighting across our planet1,2 is of increasing conservation concern3-6. Despite growing knowledge of physiological and behavioural responses to these stimuli from single-species and local-scale studies, whether these pollutants affect fitness is less clear, as is how and why species vary in their sensitivity to these anthropic stressors. Here we leverage a large citizen science dataset paired with high-resolution noise and light data from across the contiguous United States to assess how these stimuli affect reproductive success in 142 bird species. Pigmentation anomalies such as albinism, leucism, and melanism in mammals are uncommon but can provide insight into genetic, ecological, and demographic patterns within populations. We documented piebaldism, a form of leucism, in Syntheosciurus granatensis using camera-trap bycatch data (2014-2024), verified iNaturalist observations, and records from collaborators in northwestern Ecuador. From camera-trap data, 96 of 301 independent events (31.9%) showed piebald individuals. We also compiled 36 iNaturalist observations and five additional records from collaborators. Piebald and normally colore

The emergence of low-cost, user-friendly and very compact air pollution platforms enable observations at high spatial resolution in near-real-time and provide new opportunities to simultaneously enhance existing monitoring systems, as well as engage citizens in active environmental monitoring. This provides a whole new set of capabilities in the assessment of human exposure to air pollution. However, the data generated by these platforms are often of questionable quality. We have conducted an exhaustive evaluation of 24 identical units of a commercial low-cost sensor platform against CEN (Euro

Anthropogenic stress associated with urban development can change groundwater hydrology and introduce contaminants that may compromise its utility. Green Stormwater infrastructure (GSI) alters local landscapes and uses natural flora to manage stormwater and mitigate flooding, but it may also influence groundwater hydrology, and contaminant fate and transport. This multidisciplinary project engaged with community groups to develop and implement a low-cost, citizen-led groundwater monitoring program at the GSI sociotechnical interface in Detroit, MI (USA). GSI installations were constructed at a

UNLABELLED: Sea turtles spend most of their life cycle in foraging grounds. Research in developmental habitats is crucial to understanding individual dynamics and to support conservation strategies. One approach to gather information in foraging grounds is the use of cost-effective and non-invasive techniques that allow public participation. The present study aimed to use photographic-identification (photo-ID) to investigate the spatio-temporal distribution of Chelonia mydas and Eretmochelys imbricata. Furthermore, we describe fibropapillomatosis occurrence. This work was carried out at subtro

Changing climates are reshaping animal populations, but our understanding of how demographic trends are shaped by individual responses to local environmental conditions has historically been limited to long-term studies with restricted spatial scales. Participatory science (i.e. citizen science) programs have improved our ability to identify geographic variation in population-level trends, but these programs often lack insight into the individual-level processes that underly such variation. Here we present a new research framework that uses long-term data to validate participatory science obse

Datasets describing the composition of biological communities across broad anthropogenic gradients are valuable resources for ecologists and conservation biologists, with applications ranging from testing theories of community assembly to guiding biodiversity management. But much of the most rigorously collected field survey datasets, particularly for vascular plant communities in urban environments, remain underutilized because they are not curated or publicly accessible. We compiled and standardized a large database of information on the composition of vascular plant communities from sites s

The vaginal microbiome is key for women's health. However, its establishment, interindividual variation and dynamics remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate bacterial relatedness at species and strain level in adult mother-daughter pairs from the large-scale citizen-science program Isala. Using metagenomic sequencing with quality control including 16S rRNA profile comparison, along with targeted culturing, we assess intergenerational microbiome sharing. At species level, daughters' vaginal microbiomes are significantly more similar to their mothers' than to those of unrelated mothers, w

A novel strain of the genus Lactobacillus, named AMBV1719T, was isolated from the vagina of a healthy participant in our large-scale citizen science project on the female microbiome, named Isala. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the 16S rRNA gene of AMBV1719T is most similar to that of Lactobacillus taiwanensis with a sequence similarity of 99.873 %. However, a genome-wide comparison using average nucleotide identity (ANI) revealed that isolate AMBV1719T showed the highest ANI with Lactobacillus paragasseri JCM 5343T, with a value of only 88.17 %. This low ANI value with the most closely rela

In most, if not all health systems, dementia is underdiagnosed, and when diagnosis occurs, it is typically at a relatively late stage in the disease process despite mounting evidence showing that a timely diagnosis would result in numerous benefits for patients, families, and society. Moving toward earlier diagnoses in Alzheimer's disease (AD) requires a conscientious and collective effort to implement a global strategy addressing the multiple causes hindering patient engagement at different levels of society. This article describes the design of the Models of Patient Engagement for Alzheimer'

A national crowdsourcing-based tick collection campaign was organized in 2015 with the objective of producing novel data on tick distribution and tick-borne pathogens in Finland. Nearly 20 000 Ixodes ticks were collected. The collected material revealed the nationwide distribution of I. persulcatus for the first time and a shift northwards in the distribution of I. ricinus in Finland. A subset of 2038 tick samples containing both species was screened for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (the prevalence was 14.2% for I. ricinus and 19.8% for I. persulcatus), B. miyamotoi (0.2% and 0.4%, respecti
