Objective To analyze the radiological, clinical, and functional outcomes of clavicle fractures treated with the minimally-invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) technique. Methods From June 2018 to July 2019, 17 cases of clavicular fractures were managed using the MIPO technique under C-arm fluoroscopy. The functional outcomes were assessed using the Constant-Murley score and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire. The clinical results of union, the complications, the operative time, the hospital stay, as well as infection, were analyzed. Results The mean follow-u

The clavicle is the most commonly fractured bone, and the most frequently fractured part of the clavicle is the middle third (ie, midshaft). X-ray usually is the first-line imaging modality for clavicle injuries. Conservative management is preferred for patients with uncomplicated and nondisplaced clavicular fractures. Typically, immobilization should last 4 weeks, then range-of-motion exercises should begin after 4 weeks, with full return to activities by 12 weeks. Distal clavicle osteolysis is a relatively uncommon pathologic bone resorption that occurs with repetitive overhead activities. C

A 44-year-old man with a 9-day-old left displaced midshaft clavicle fracture was initially treated conservatively. The patient experienced an increase of pain with tickling and cold sensation in the left upper extremity. CT angiography showed left subclavian artery occlusion over 3 cm at the level of the fracture. At surgical repair, a subclavian-brachial bypass was constructed and fracture fixation was done with an eight-hole locking compression plate. Follow-up at 6 months showed full range of motion of the left shoulder, an open bypass and fracture consolidation.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the effects that patient demographics, injury, and social characteristics have on functional outcomes after clavicle fracture.
METHODS: After a mean follow-up of 56 months, 214 patients with a mean age of 44.4 years completed the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) Standardized Shoulder Assessment Form. The effects that age, sex, fracture location, open fracture, associated injuries, tobacco use, employment status, and timing of surgery had on functional outcomes were assessed.
RESULTS: The mean ASES score for the entire group of 214 patients was 80

Isolated fractures of the clavicle have been rarely reported to be complicated by a pneumothorax. However, a delayed pneumothorax following this injury has not yet been reported in the literature. This case report describes a 19-year-old man who developed a left-sided apical pneumothorax from an ipsilateral fractured clavicle 5 days after his initial motorbike accident. Initial chest examination and radiographs showed no evidence of a pneumothorax in the accident and emergency department but a repeat radiograph in fracture clinic to assess the clavicle diagnosed an ipsilateral apical pneumotho

Most clavicle shaft fractures in children are nondisplaced, minimally shortened or angulated, and are well treated with nonoperative management. Indications for operative fixation include open fractures and impending open fractures. Relative indications for operative fixation include fractures in multi-trauma patients, floating shoulder injuries, comminuted fractures, and shortened fractures in older adolescents. Controversies exist in preferred methods of fixation and include superior or anteroinferior plating, locked or unlocked plating, and intramedullary fixation. Retrospective studies of

BACKGROUND: Aneurysms of the subclavian artery (SA) are rare, but they can present with devastating consequences that may lead to loss of the limb. We present a case of symptomatic posttraumatic aneurysm of the left SA in a 67-year-old woman.
METHODS: A 67-year-old woman presented to our vascular unit with a history of sudden pain in her left hand, forearm, and shoulder, together with vasomotor changes. A chest radiograph revealed a fracture of the left clavicle because of a car accident that took place 17 years ago, and the digital subtraction angiography revealed presence of an aneurysm of

BACKGROUND: The fracture of clavicle is the most frequently observed bone fracture as birth trauma and it is usually unilateral. It is seen following shoulder dystocia deliveries or breech presentation of macrosomic newborns.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two macrosomic newborns with bilateral clavicle fracture and brachial plexus palsy due to birth trauma. Chest X-rays confirmed bilateral fracture of clavicles. Both patients were recovered without any sequel.
CONCLUSION: Bilateral clavicular fracture should be considered in any neonate with bilateral absent Moro reflexes.

BACKGROUND: Although various surgical methods are available for unstable distal clavicle fractures, consensus remains lacking on the optimal technique. Therefore, the present retrospective study aimed to compare the clavicle hook plate and Scorpion Plate® in terms of clinical outcomes and radiological findings for unstable distal clavicle fractures.
METHODS: Fifty-seven patients with unstable distal clavicle fractures who underwent treatment using a clavicle hook plate (Group H; 28 patients) or Scorpion Plate® (Group S; 29 patients) were included in the present study. No patients received add

BACKGROUND: The clavicular hook plate is an accepted surgical procedure for distal clavicle fractures. The relationship of the characteristics of the hook plate, acromioclavicular joint and acromion morphology, and clinical outcome has remained poorly understood. We reviewed the clinical records of patients who had distal clavicle fractures with different lateral acromion angles treated using a clavicle hook plate and evaluated their clinical outcomes with respect to shoulder pain and acromial morphology.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 102 patients with distal clavicle fractures treated

A 25-year-old female patient complained of intermittent pseudoradicular, ulnar-accentuated tingling paraesthesias of the right arm, accompanied by swelling and cyanotic skin discolouration of the forearm 9 days following plate osteosynthesis of a clavicle shaft fracture in the middle third (OTA classification type B). CT angiography revealed almost complete obstruction of the lumen of the subclavian vein at the junction between the clavicle and the first rib, which was consistent with a thoracic inlet syndrome. This was triggered by a haematoma of the concomitantly fractured first rib and a co

INTRODUCTION: Clavicle fractures account for a significant proportion of shoulder girdle injuries, with varying treatment modalities employed, ranging from conservative management to surgical intervention. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of clavicle fractures treated conservatively versus those treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 94 patients with clavicle fractures treated between 2019 and 2023.
PATIENTS WERE CATEGORIZED INTO TWO GROUPS: those receiving conservative treatment (n = 52) and those un

Clavicle fractures are frequent injuries accounting for approximately 4% of all fractures in adults with about 35% occurring in the shoulder region among which midshaft fractures are the most common (>66%). Nonsurgical management is the treatment of choice for most clavicle fractures; however, poor functional and aesthetic outcomes may result from nonunion, symptomatic malunion, and aesthetic impairment which are the most common complications. A young woman was referred to our clinic for a "Step Deformity" resulting after primary, nonsurgical treatment of a midshaft clavicle fracture. Residual

In this case report, we presented to a 90-year-old female with multiple comorbidities presented to the emergency department of our hospital three weeks following a fall from standing height. Upon arrival, the patient exhibited a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) 12, blood pressure of 100/60 mmHg, heart rate of 117 beats/min, respiratory rate of 24 breaths/min. Examination revealed atrophy, skin color change, sensory disturbance, or motor palsy in the left upper extremity. Chest X-ray showed a fractured left clavicle, with its free fragment dislocated toward the thorax. She was diagnosed with a displace

PURPOSE: Clavicle fractures are among the most common orthopedic fractures, and treatment methods, operative versus nonoperative, have been a point of contention. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 50 most influential articles regarding clavicle fractures to better understand past focuses of research and to identify any gaps in knowledge.
METHODS: A review of the most cited articles related to clavicle fractures was conducted using Web of Science database. A search was conducted in April 2022 by one trained researcher. Two independent researchers evaluated each article based on rel

Operative management of sternoclavicular fracture-dislocations is recommended in the setting of symptomatic nonunion. Treatment options include open reduction internal fixation, fragment excision, and ligamentous reconstruction. We present a 29-year-old man with a medial clavicle fracture nonunion that previously failed open reduction internal fixation and was treated with sternoclavicular joint reconstruction using tendon allograft.
