OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to test whether common age-related neuropathology could account for the relation of chronic distress to dementia.
METHODS: In a selected cohort of more than 1000 older Catholic clergy members undergoing annual clinical evaluations, 326 persons died, of whom 306 (94%) underwent brain autopsy, the results of which were available in 219 (mean age at death = 85.4, standard deviation [SD] = 6.6; mean postmortem interval = 7.6 hours, SD = 6.9). A composite measure of chronic distress was constructed from standard measures of two traits, neuroticism and anx

OBJECTIVES: We examined the relationship between caregivers' receipt of spiritual support and experiences of positive aspects of caregiving.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of bereaved caregivers' responses (n = 257) to the 2023 wave of the Care Network Connections over Time (CNCT) survey, a nationally representative longitudinal survey of family and friend caregivers to older adults. Positive aspects of caregiving were measured by an 8-item scale (range: 0-16) about positive experiences in the final month of care. Caregivers' receipt of spiritual support was assessed through se

The present study's purpose was to address the lack of research on correlates of ethnically diverse sexual assault (SA) survivors' formal support-seeking post-assault. Types of support sources told about SA, trauma histories, and PTSD severity were examined in African American and Latina women survivors and analyzed in relationship to formal help-seeking after SA from various professionals (e.g., rape crisis, mental health, medical, police, clergy) in the Chicago metropolitan area. Survivors of SA (N=1863) participated in a mail survey, including 766 African American and 239 Latinas (85% respo

OBJECTIVE: The unmet need for mental health care in racial/ethnic minorities has been a major public health concern. Using a sample of African Americans, this study questioned whether self-rated mental health (SRMH), an individual's subjective assessment of personal mental and emotional status, modifies the link between mental disorders and service use.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional analyses of the Milwaukee African American oversample of the Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS II) study, 2005-2006.
SETTING: In-home personal interviews.
PARTICIPANTS: Self-identified African American/b

Moral injury, an experience of betrayal or transgression of moral values, continues to receive attention because of its associations with psychiatric disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder and suicidality. There is growing recognition that moral injury may require novel interventions that involve religious or spiritual paradigms. This pilot study presents feasibility data and exploratory outcomes for 40 veteran participants across seven cohorts who participated in a novel 12-week moral injury group (MIG) over 35 months. The MIG was cofacilitated by a Veterans Affairs chaplain and p

Several studies have examined the goals and outcomes of chaplaincy within institutional settings. Our study contributes to the literature by examining whether chaplaincy goals and outcomes are specific to different outpatient, primary, and community care contexts. We conducted a round of 9 and one of 8 focus groups, with clients, chaplains, and other professionals from five contexts: the Dutch earthquake zone, general healthcare, pediatric palliative care, care for the unhoused, and veteran care. Using an explorative, descriptive and quantitative design, 77 goals and 59 outcomes are compared a

Sexual abuse within the Catholic Church is a distressing concern. As part of the investigation conducted by the French Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church, we analysed available files of convicted sexual abusers between 1950 and 2020. We analysed the socio-demographic and clinical characteristics of French clergymen sex offenders. Thirty-five clergymen were included. Sexual assaults were documented for 176 individuals in total, including 153 minors (79.7% male) and 23 adults (52.2% female). No sex offender assaulted both juvenile and adult victims. Homosexuality was declared i

BACKGROUND: Currently, 28 states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis for medical use despite its remaining Schedule I federally. Benefits of medical cannabis (MC) have been demonstrated in nausea/vomiting associated with chemotherapy, cachexia associated with HIV/AIDS, and certain types of neuropathic pain. However, it is unclear how comfortable hospice providers are with the concept of MC.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine changes in knowledge, self-perceived skills, and attitudes (KSA) of hospice providers regarding MC after an online educational intervention

PURPOSE: From the eleventh to the thirteenth century, three major events marked surgery in France: the appearance of an epidemic linked to ergotism which led to numerous amputations, the emergence of barber surgeons for civilian practice, and the organization of war surgery for the First Crusade.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: If a certain separation between medicine and surgery had appeared at the beginning of the Middle Ages, it would have been from 1215 (at the time of the Lateran Council) that the real separation between medicine and surgery was made. Before this date, the surgery was done by the

The National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) supports out-of-hospital termination of resuscitation for adult, nontraumatic cardiac arrest patients who have not responded to full resuscitative efforts. The following factors should be considered in establishing termination of resuscitation protocols: 1) Termination of resuscitation may be considered for any adult patient who suffers sudden cardiac death that is likely to be medical. 2) Unwitnessed cardiac arrest with delayed initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) beyond 6 minutes and delayed defibrillation beyond 8 minutes has

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates how demographic factors influenced mortality risk during the Black Death. Uniquely, we examine how specific ages-at-death given sex (e.g., 18-26 years old, female) experienced the Black Death and whether the intersection of those identities further compounded vulnerability. We hypothesize that individuals who were at the intersection of being younger and male faced higher mortality risk.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed skeletal data from seven medieval London cemeteries using the Wellcome Osteological Research Database (WORD). The variables analyzed were

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms underlying a reported tendency for women who hold strong religious beliefs to seek medical help at more advanced stages of breast cancer are unknown. This study investigates further the effect of religious beliefs with other variables on breast cancer screening and the intended presentation of a self-discovered breast lump.
METHODS: The study included 682 eastern North Carolina women aged 40 and over who were interviewed in their homes about religious and other beliefs about breast cancer, screening, and intended actions with a self-discovered breast lump.
RESULTS:

West Side Alive (WSA) is a partnership among pastors, church members and health researchers with the goal of improving health in the churches and surrounding community in the West Side of Chicago, a highly segregated African American area of Chicago with high rates of premature mortality and social disadvantage. To inform health intervention development, WSA conducted a series of health screenings that took place in seven partner churches. Key measures included social determinants of health and healthcare access, depression and PTSD screeners, and measurement of cardiometabolic risk factors, i

BACKGROUND: In 1964, faced with the challenge of traumatic amputation, a team of surgeons at Clinica Guayaquil was convinced that the transplantation of a hand could significantly improve function and quality of life for the recipient. With a current but basic understanding of immunosuppression, the surgeons identified a recipient and waited for the correct donor. A human hand transplant had never been performed to date.
METHODS: The surgeons' criteria for the recipient included a young healthy individual who had sustained a traumatic amputation at the distal forearm level with full motion of

Galanin (GAL) is a biologically active 29 amino acid (30 in humans) which participates in the modulation of several ascending neurotransmitter systems including cholinergic basal forebrain (CBF) neurons, which undergo extensive degeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD). GAL immunoreactive fibers within the CBF display hypertrophy and hyperinnervate surviving CBF neurons in late AD. Over the years, this unique neuronal plasticity response has been an active area of research for our group. We have examined tissue from a clinically well characterized cohort of retired elderly clergy to determine w

BACKGROUND: Infections in neonates with herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) following circumcision due to Metzitzah Be'Peh (MBP) performed by a Mohel occur each year in small numbers. One solution to this problem is the use of a mucus extractor device instead of MBP, which has been authorized by some rabbis. Yet, using a mucus extractor remains controversial among ultra-Orthodox Jews; thus, creating a need for additional solutions.
OBJECTIVES: To seek to reduce HSV-1 infection of neonates due to MBP.
METHODS: We tested several oral rinse solutions for their ability to destroy virus infectivity fo

There is an often-overlooked but critical factor at the center of institutional child sexual abuse that must be acknowledged and addressed: adults tend to place the interest of institutions and other adults above the protection of children. As the Australian Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse has shown, this phenomenon is evident across institutional settings and any institutional reform aimed at improving child safety must therefore guard against this tendency if it is to be effective in protecting children. In the United States there are also other barriers t

The purpose of this study is to explore a theological perspective toward genetic counseling. A survey was sent to 207 ministers within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), to determine their perspectives toward four different scenarios in a prenatal genetic counseling setting. The four different scenarios included situations involving Huntington disease, Down syndrome, trisomy 18, and anencephaly. Nearly all ELCA Lutheran pastors perceived genetic counseling as beneficial and useful and wanted to be involved in the decision-making process for whether or not to terminate pregnancy
