OBJECTIVES: We examined the relationship between caregivers' receipt of spiritual support and experiences of positive aspects of caregiving.

METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of bereaved caregivers' responses (n = 257) to the 2023 wave of the Care Network Connections over Time (CNCT) survey, a nationally representative longitudinal survey of family and friend caregivers to older adults. Positive aspects of caregiving were measured by an 8-item scale (range: 0-16) about positive experiences in the final month of care. Caregivers' receipt of spiritual support was assessed through several items about support from clergy, chaplains, and spiritual communities while caregiving and during bereavement. We fit adjusted regression models of positive aspects of caregiving on spiritual support received.

RESULTS: Positive aspects of caregiving were experienced more often among caregivers who received spiritual support (11.6 ± 4.1) compared to caregivers who did not (8.2 ± 4.4). Receiving spiritual support was associated with a 2.54-point higher score for experiencing positive aspects of caregiving (p < .001). This positive association persisted when additionally controlling for whether the caregiver was religious (b = 2.30, p < .001) and how frequently they attended religious services (b = 2.52, p < .001). Results were similar when examining receipt of spiritual support specifically during bereavement or while caregiving.

DISCUSSION: Receiving spiritual support while caregiving and/or during bereavement fostered more experiences of positive aspects of caregiving beyond what was gained by being religious or regularly attending religious services. These findings suggest that caregivers may benefit from interventions involving spiritual support.
