Comparative transcriptomic analysis of the thymus and other immune-related tissues using post-mortem samples from stranded cetaceans in South Korea.

Cetaceans are mammals that have adapted to aquatic environments, but their immunological characteristics are not well understood. In this study, we performed comparative transcriptomic analyses of major immune-related tissues (thymus, spleen, liver, and kidney) from post-mortem samples of stranded cetaceans in Korea, including the finless porpoise, fetal minke whale and Risso's dolphin. For cross-taxa comparisons, we retrieved publicly available transcriptomic datasets from terrestrial mammals (human and mouse), teleosts (zebrafish, common carp, and turbot), birds (chicken), reptiles (green se

Three-Dimensional Analysis of Craniofacial Structures of Individuals With Nonsyndromic Unilateral Complete Cleft Lip and Palate.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is one of the most common congenital deformities. Primary surgeries at an early age result in scar formation, which may impede the growth of craniofacial structures of the maxilla. Orthodontist's role in the management of individuals with CLP is important and starts from the time of birth. The knowledge of craniofacial structures in individuals with a cleft is essential for treatment planning. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare craniofacial structures of cleft and noncleft side of individuals with non-syndromic unilateral complete cleft lip and pala

Post-orthodontic cephalometric variations in bimaxillary protrusion cases managed by premolar extraction - A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Bimaxillary protrusion is a common dentofacial condition associated with proclination of maxillary and mandibular incisors in relation to the dental and cranial bases resulting in soft tissue procumbency. The present retrospective study aimed to investigate dental and soft tissue profile changes using cephalometric analysis to evaluate bimaxillary protrusion patients after extraction of the first four premolars and subsequent retraction of the anterior teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pre-treatment and post-treatment cephalometric radiographs of 46 Saudi patients (16 males and 30 fem

Influence of magnification and superimposition of structures on cephalometric diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of magnification and superimposition of structures on CBCT-generated lateral cephalometric radiographs (LCR) using different segments of the cranium. METHODS: CBCT scans of 10 patients were selected. Four LCR were generated using Dolphin Imaging(r) software: full-face, right side, left side and center of the head. A total of 40 images were imported into Radiocef Studio 2(r), and the angles of the most common cephalometric analyses were traced by the same observer twice and within a 10-day interval. Statistical analyses included

Swimming Anatomy and Lower Back Injuries in Competitive Swimmers: A Narrative Review.

CONTEXT: Competitive swimmers are at high risk of overuse musculoskeletal injuries due to their high training volumes. Spine injuries are the second most common musculoskeletal injury in swimmers and are often a result of the combination of improper technique, high loads on the spine in strokes that require hyperextension, and repetitive overuse leading to fatigue of the supporting trunk muscles. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current evidence regarding swimming biomechanics, stroke techniques, and common injuries in the lumbar spine to promote a discussion on the prevention an

Enamel ultrastructure in fossil cetaceans (Cetacea: Archaeoceti and Odontoceti).

The transition from terrestrial ancestry to a fully pelagic life profoundly altered the body systems of cetaceans, with extreme morphological changes in the skull and feeding apparatus. The Oligocene Epoch was a crucial time in the evolution of cetaceans when the ancestors of modern whales and dolphins (Neoceti) underwent major diversification, but details of dental structure and evolution are poorly known for the archaeocete-neocete transition. We report the morphology of teeth and ultrastructure of enamel in archaeocetes, and fossil platanistoids and delphinoids, ranging from late Oligocene

Tere Tohorā, Karanga Tāngata: Weaving Māori Knowledge With Conventional Science to Characterise a Biodiversity Hotspot for Marine Megafauna in an Area Facing Multiple Anthropogenic Impacts.

Marine megafauna are important components of marine ecosystems and are of major significance to Indigenous communities, including Māori. Despite being recognised as a biodiversity hotspot for megafauna, most locations in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) do not have adequate information for the management of anthropogenic impacts on these taxa. Due to long-standing relationships with Māori, there is a wealth of mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) on megafauna that may help fill key gaps. This study, Tere Tohorā Karanga Tāngata, aims to address information gaps on marine megafauna within Te Ākau/Bream B

Cephalometry in adults and children with neurofibromatosis type 1: Implications for the pathogenesis of sphenoid wing dysplasia and the "NF1 facies".

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a common, autosomal dominant tumor-predisposition disorder that arises secondary to mutations in the tumor suppressor gene NF1. Cephalometry is an inexpensive, readily available and non-invasive technique that is under-utilized in studying the NF1 craniofacial phenotype. An analysis of NF1 cephalometry was first published by Heervä et al. in 2011. We expand here on that first investigation with a larger cohort of adult and pediatric patients affected with NF1 and sought objective insight into the NF1 facies, said to feature hypertelorism and a broa

3D analysis of upper airway morphology related to obstructive sleep apnea severity.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder characterized by repetitive collapse of the upper airway during sleep. However, little evidence is available on the differences between the sub-regions of the upper airway morphology and OSA severity. Since orthodontists frequently perform cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the neck area, we aimed to investigate the relationship and the differences between upper airway morphology and OSA severity using CBCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records, CBCT imaging of 21 OSA patients diagnosed by

Three-dimensional assessment of impacted canines and root resorption using cone beam computed tomography.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to localize impacted canines in 3 dimensions and determine the most common location of impaction using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). We also assessed root resorption of adjacent teeth. The cusp tip of each impacted canine was located and digitized using Dolphin 3D imaging, after viewing sagittal, coronal, and axial views. The position on the occlusal plane where the normally erupted canine cusp tip should be located was used as a control reference point. The degree of impaction was defined by the difference between the impacted canine cusp tip

Tracheostomy: epidemiology, indications, timing, technique, and outcomes.

Tracheostomy is a common procedure performed in critically ill patients requiring prolonged mechanical ventilation for acute respiratory failure and for airway issues. The ideal timing (early vs late) and techniques (percutaneous dilatational, other new percutaneous techniques, open surgical) for tracheostomy have been topics of considerable debate. In this review, we address general issues regarding tracheostomy (epidemiology, indications, and outcomes) and specifically review the literature regarding appropriate timing of tracheostomy tube placement. Based on evidence from 2 recent large ran

Canine distemper infections, with special reference to South Africa, with a review of the literature.

Canine distemper virus is a member of the genus Morbillivirus of the family Paramyxoviridae that causes severe disease in dogs and a range of wild mammals. The clinical signs relate essentially to the respiratory, gastrointestinal and central nervous systems. In South Africa, infection with Ehrlichia canis and canine parvovirus may present similarly Many dogs will initially present with a wide range of central nervous system signs without any history of systemic disease. A recent South African study evaluating ante mortem diagnosis highlighted the importance of recognising clinical signs, cere

Evaluation of the dental and skeletal effects of mandibular advancement by herbst appliance combined with miniscrews: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Skeletal Class II malocclusion with mandibular retrognathia is a common, condition that can compromise oral function and facial aesthetics. The Herbst appliance is an effective fixed functional appliance; however, it may result in mesial movement of mandibular molars and proclination of mandibular incisors. Miniscrews may help mitigate these side effects. This study aimed to compare the dental and skeletal effects of conventional Herbst appliances versus Herbst appliances combined with miniscrews in adolescent patients with skeletal Class II malocclusion and mandibular retrognathia

Inactivation of the olfactory marker protein (OMP) gene in river dolphins and other odontocete cetaceans.

Various toothed whales (Odontoceti) are unique among mammals in lacking olfactory bulbs as adults and are thought to be anosmic (lacking the olfactory sense). At the molecular level, toothed whales have high percentages of pseudogenic olfactory receptor genes, but species that have been investigated to date retain an intact copy of the olfactory marker protein gene (OMP), which is highly expressed in olfactory receptor neurons and may regulate the temporal resolution of olfactory responses. One hypothesis for the retention of intact OMP in diverse odontocete lineages is that this gene is pleio

Assessing current visual tooth wear age estimation methods for Rangifer tarandus using a known age sample from Canada.

Age estimation is crucial for investigating animal populations in the past and present. Visual examination of tooth wear and eruption is one of the most common ageing methods in zooarchaeology, wildlife management, palaeontology, and veterinary research. Such approaches are particularly advantageous because they are non-destructive, can be completed using photographs, and do not require specialized training. Several tooth wear and eruption methods have been developed for Rangifer tarandus, a widely distributed and long-utilized species in the North. This paper evaluates the practicality and ef
