Effectiveness of HIV-related mental health practice in inner cities has not been adequately documented despite an urgent need for interventions for populations disproportionately affected by the epidemic. Practices must take into account and respond to cultural issues of people of colour and the needs of those infected through injection drug use or heterosexual sex with IDUs. We report the effectiveness of an HIV mental health programme integrated with primary care and emphasizing cultural responsiveness. A sample of 47 of 188 patients who received psychiatric and psychotherapy services was co

INTRODUCTION: Persons with physical disabilities (PWD) are a health care disparity group who face both difficulties accessing and inequalities in care. Although their sexual health is impacted by their disability and important to them, they often receive no or inadequate sexual health care. To address this gap, we sought to summarize evidence-based recommendations for culturally sensitive sexual health care for PWD.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this scoping review was to identify patient-reported preferences for culturally sensitive sexual health care for people with Parkinson's Disease, Multiple S

Gestational weight gain (GWG) is critical for maternal and neonatal health, but excessive GWG can lead to complications such as gestational diabetes, hypertension, and increased obesity risk later in life. Minoritized and immigrant women often face higher risks of excessive GWG. This cross-sectional study assessed Central American women's beliefs and concerns about GWG, the receipt of advice from healthcare providers, and sources of information for healthy weight management during pregnancy. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 93 pregnant women from El Salvador (31.2%), Guatemala (46.2

Methods to treat cancer pain effectively have existed for more than 2 decades. However, the effective treatment of cancer pain continues to elude many patients with cancer who suffer from poor management. Although efforts to address the problem of cancer pain in the United States have acknowledged the importance of patient education and advocacy, few endeavors, to date, have attended to the special needs of inner-city, low-literacy, or socioeconomically disadvantaged patients from minority cultural groups. From 1992 to 1995, the Boston Cancer Pain Education Program, funded by the National Canc

Forced displacement has reached unprecedented levels, with over 120 million people uprooted globally and more than 100,000 refugees resettled in the United States in 2024. Refugees arrive with diverse cultural identities, prior professional roles, and experiences of trauma, yet often face systemic barriers, clinician bias, and unmet health needs. This article offers a practical framework grounded in holistic, person-centered values for delivering palliative nursing care to refugee communities. It outlines the complex resettlement journey and highlights how structural inequities, institutional

BACKGROUND: Reflecting on the rapidly ageing population with a growing need for end-of-life (EOL) care and ethnic diversity in Singapore, it is important to understand culturally specific views on the meaning of good death and end-of-life (EOL) care plans and preferences.
METHODS: This study explores older Singaporeans' perspectives on the meaning of good death and their end-of-life (EOL) care plans and preferences, by conducting 18 in-depth interviews with older Singaporeans. The data was analysed using an iterative thematic analysis involving independent coding followed by iterative discuss

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Oral antiviral therapy with nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) for chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is well-tolerated and lifesaving, but real-world data on utilization are limited. We examined rates of evaluation and treatment in patients from the REAL-B consortium.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study nested within our retrospective multinational clinical consortium (2000-2021). We determined the proportions of patients receiving adequate evaluation, meeting AASLD treatment criteria, and initiating treatment at any time during the study period. We also identified factors associa

Men who have sex with men (MSM) in the USA were the first population to be identified with AIDS and continue to be at very high risk of HIV acquisition. We did a systematic literature search to identify the factors that explain the reasons for the ongoing epidemic in this population, using a social-ecological perspective. Common features of the HIV epidemic in American MSM include role versatility and biological, individual, and social and structural factors. The high-prevalence networks of some racial and ethnic minority men are further concentrated because of assortative mixing, adverse life

Other groups in the United States could no doubt benefit from attention to the issue of organ donation, but I was unable to collect any data on the cultural beliefs and perspectives of the Asian American population, for example, regarding organ donation. We know that most Asian countries, such as Japan, have only recently begun organ donation programs. The United States represents one of the most culturally heterogeneous populations in the world today. Health care workers are called on every day of their lives to overcome cultural or ethnic differences, and at no point during the health care p

Women generally seek and use more health care services than do men. Women are also more likely to encounter financial and non-financial barriers to care than do their male counterparts. These differences are accentuated among low income and minority women. We examined health care utilization patterns among women on O'ahu using survey data, and compared those patterns among Native Hawaiian and other ethnic groups. We also provide prevalence rates for several critical women's health issues by ethnic group and explore demographic predictors for health care utilization. Although the vast majority

BACKGROUND: In Australia, rural and regional areas have an increased proportion of older people who are ageing more rapidly than their metropolitan counterparts. This increase in the ageing population and its uneven geographic distribution is likely to pose an oral health challenge in the near future.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study conducted in a sample of 226 community-dwelling adults aged 55 years and older, living in the City of Greater Bendigo who completed a questionnaire and received an oral examination.
RESULTS: Overall, 51.2% of participants reported having been to the dentist in t

ABSTRACT: The burden of cancer remains elevated for American Indians/Alaska Natives (AI/AN) in the United States, particularly in urban communities. Urban Indian Organizations (UIO) are a part of the Indian healthcare system for urban AI/AN populations to receive culturally competent care; therefore, it is important that UIOs convey the importance of cancer preventive and treatment options through their websites. The purpose of this study was to utilize the Indian Health Service (IHS) Office of Urban Indian Health Programs’ official website to identify, analyze, and describe the IHS-funded UIO

BACKGROUND: Preparing health professionals to deliver equitable, culturally competent care requires integrating gender perspectives throughout medical training. While essential for addressing health disparities affecting women, men, and gender-diverse populations, implementation approaches vary widely across institutions and regions. Evidence on effective strategies remains fragmented. This systematic review synthesizes educational interventions for gender-sensitive training, evaluates outcomes on student competencies, and examines global research patterns to identify equity gaps in the schola

BACKGROUND: The shortage of organs for kidney transplantation for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is magnified in Hispanics/Latin Americans in the United States. Living donor kidney transplantation (LDKT) is the treatment of choice for ESRD. However, compared to their representation on the transplant waitlist, fewer Hispanics receive a LDKT than non-Hispanic whites. Barriers to LDKT for Hispanics include: lack of knowledge, cultural concerns, and language barriers. Few interventions have been designed to reduce LDKT disparities. This study aims to reduce Hispanic disparities in LD

BACKGROUND: Culturally safe care is critical to positive maternal health experiences and outcomes. However, refugee and migrant women often experience inequities in maternal healthcare. To address these challenges, healthcare providers are increasingly using co-design. Much of this research focusses on evaluating outcomes or using traditional methods to obtain lived experience input. Comparatively, there is a paucity of research detailing how to achieve value-based co-design with refugee and migrant women.
AIM: The project aimed to co-design an education resource to support the development of

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated ethnic differences in the frequency of eating disorder symptoms and related distress in a U.S. college-based eating disorders screening program.
METHOD: Responses to self-report questions and counselors' assessment were analyzed in an ethnically diverse sample (n = 5,435).
RESULTS: The frequency of binge-eating, restrictive eating, vomiting, and amenorrhea did not differ significantly across ethnic groups. However, significant between-group differences were found with respect to modes of purging. Binge correlates (e.g., eating until uncomfortably full) were
