Small central cervical disc syndrome: evaluation and treatment of chronic disabling neck pain.

In this retrospective study of 22 patients with severe disabling neck, interscapular, and shoulder pain we evaluated the effectiveness of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of small central cervical disc ruptures, and anterior cervical discectomy for the treatment of this condition. Conservative therapy had failed for all patients. All had been disabled for their normal activities for at least 6 months. MRI demonstrated two patterns of mid- or parasagittal disc disease. Anterior cervical discectomy produced nine excellent, six good, five fair, and two poor results. All but one

[Tuberculosis of the urogenital tract--guidelines for evaluation within the social compensation law and laws for the disabled].

For the urologist who works as a consultant in the German "Social Compensation Law" tuberculosis of the urogenital tract is of current interest. The assessment of a causal connection represents no difficulty, when the existence of a pleuritis exsudativa is proven or when tuberculosis is accepted as being military service connected. For the assumption of a causal connection in the so called compensation law the probability is sufficient and it should be considered, that long term latencies are typical. The consultant must realize that today tuberculosis is a curable infection because of the eff

Psychometric evaluation of neglect assessment reveals motor-exploratory predictor of functional disability in acute-stage spatial neglect.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the psychometric properties of 2 neglect measures, the Behavioral Inattention Test (BIT)-conventional and the Catherine Bergego Scale (CBS), in acute spatial neglect. Spatial neglect is a failure or slowness to respond, orient, or initiate action toward contralesional stimuli, associated with functional disability that impedes stroke recovery. Early identification of specific neglect deficits may identify patients likely to experience chronic disability. However, psychometric evaluation of assessments has focused on subacute/chronic populations. DESIGN: Correlational/p

Stability of parent report on Mobility and Self-Care item scores of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory.

Secondary analysis using data from a clinical trial was performed to evaluate the stability of individual items of the Mobility and Self-Care functional skills scales of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI). Parents of 113 children aged 1-6 years old with cerebral palsy completed the PEDI twice by questionnaire 6 months apart. An item was classified "unstable" if the score changed from capable to unable. The number of children with more than five unstable items and the number of items with more than five children having unstable scoring patterns were calculated. Nineteen chi

Development of a postacute hospital item bank for the new Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory-Computer Adaptive Test.

The PEDI-CAT is a new computer adaptive test (CAT)version of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory(PEDI). Additional PEDI-CAT items specific to post acute pediatric hospital care were recently developed using expert reviews and cognitive interviewing techniques.Expert reviews established face and construct validity, providing positive feedback on domain content and response scale options. Cognitive interviews established content validity while 60% of items were revised or removed because of the items being unclear or ambiguous, not measuring what was intended or lack of therapeutic t

Factors affecting disability and physical function in degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis of L4-5: evaluation with axially loaded MRI.

Few studies have investigated the factors related to the disability and physical function in degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis using axially loaded magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Therefore, we aimed to investigate the effect of axial loading on the morphology of the spine and the spinal canal in patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis of L4-5 and to correlate morphologic changes to their disability and physical functions. From March 2003 to January 2004, 32 consecutive cases (26 females, 6 males) with degenerative L4-5 spondylolisthesis, grade 1-2, intermittent claudication, and lo

Melbourne Assessment of Unilateral Upper Limb Function: construct validity and correlation with the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory.

The Melbourne Assessment of Unilateral Upper Limb Function (Melbourne Assessment) is an evaluation tool that objectively measures upper-extremity function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). This study investigates how well performance on the Melbourne Assessment relates to the child's actual performance in functional tasks. Eighteen children with CP (5 to 14 years of age; nine males, nine females) were assessed using the Melbourne Assessment and the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI). Five children had spastic quadriplegia, eight had spastic diplegia, two had spastic hemipl

Functional acuity score as a surrogate of reading performance in low vision: A Japanese disability evaluation cohort study.

This retrospective cross-sectional study examined whether the Functional Acuity Score (FAS), an administrative impairment measure calculated from routine visual acuity data, was associated with reading performance in individuals undergoing formal visual disability evaluation. Thirty-one participants applying for visual disability certification at a tertiary eye hospital in Japan underwent Goldmann perimetry and MNREAD-J testing within 12 months. FAS, the Functional Field Score (FFS), and the Functional Vision Score (FVS) were calculated according to the AMA Guides. Their associations with read

The evaluation of a training course to enhance intellectual disability awareness amongst law enforcement officers: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Disability awareness training is mandated by the United Nations Convention on People with Disabilities (UNCRPD), but there is a paucity of evidence regarding the systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of such training. This study describes the evaluation of a pilot intellectual disability awareness programme for law enforcement officers (LEOs) in Ireland. METHODS: Pre-and post-training Likert scales and a semi-structured survey were used to evaluate the effectiveness of an intellectual disabilities awareness programme delivered to LEOs. Quantitative differences in Likert score

Psychometric evaluation of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale in primary school students with mild intellectual disability: First evidence.

BACKGROUND: Although the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) is the most widely used measure of self-esteem, the evidential basis to confirm the RSES factor validity and reliability in children with intellectual disabilities (ID) has not been previously addressed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Greek version of the RSES into a sample consisting of primary school students with mild ID, bearing in mind the aspect of multidimensionality. In addition, gender differences were also investigated. METHODS: The participants were 103 primary school students
