Delayed gratification and adherence to exercise among patients with claudication.

Few studies have explicitly identified factors that explain an individual's willingness to engage in community-based exercise for claudication. Identifying the unique characteristics of those inclined toward physical activity would inform interventions that encourage walking. We examined the utility of behavioral economics-related concepts in understanding walking among Veterans with claudication. Patients who received care at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, Texas, were surveyed on symptom severity, behavioral economics, stress, and depression. The primary ou

Heterogeneity of Loss Aversion in Pathological Gambling.

Pathological gambling (PG) is characterized by continual repeated gambling behavior despite negative consequences. PG is considered to be a disorder of altered decision-making under risk, and behavioral economics tools were utilized by studies on decision-making under risk. At the same time, PG was suggested to be a heterogeneous disorder in terms of personality traits as well as risk attitude. We aimed to examine the heterogeneity of PG in terms of loss aversion, which means that a loss is subjectively felt to be larger than the same amount of gain. Thirty-one male PG subjects and 26 male hea

Incentives Versus Defaults: Cost-Effectiveness of Behavioral Approaches for HIV Screening.

Many HIV positive individuals are still undiagnosed, which has led health systems to try many approaches to expand HIV testing. In a randomized controlled trial, we found that behavioral economics interventions (opt-out testing and financial incentives) each improved HIV testing rates and these approaches are being implemented by several hospital systems. However, it is unclear if these strategies are cost-effective. We quantified the cost-effectiveness of different behavioral approaches to HIV screening-opt-out testing, financial incentives, and their combination-in terms of cost per new HIV

Gamification-augmented home-based exercise for peripheral artery disease: Rationale and design of the GAMEPAD Study.

BACKGROUND: Supervised exercise therapy improves walking performance, functional capacity, and quality of life in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). However, few patients with PAD are enrolled in supervised exercise programs, and there are a number of logistical and financial barriers to their participation. A home-based walking intervention is likely to be more accessible to patients with PAD, but no fully home-based walking program has demonstrated efficacy. Concepts from behavioral economics have been used to design scalable interventions that increase daily physical activity in

Effect of emerging digital technologies and methodologies combined with incentives on HbA1c in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: study protocol for a parallel, open randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common metabolic disease that requires long-term management and treatment. Digital intervention, as an emerging medical model, has been widely used in the treatment of T2DM patients. Behavioral economics theory provides a favorable perspective for studying the effect of digital intervention because it can reveal the decision-making mechanisms behind human behavior and provide more effective interventions for digital intervention. The purpose of this trial is to evaluate the impact of behaviorally based digital intervention on T2DM patients' HbA1

Cost-based anorexia: A novel framework to model anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is an eating disorder that is thought to emerge through biological predisposition(s) within sociocultural context(s). Practical and ethical concerns limit study of the etiology of this disorder in humans, and in particular the biological aspects. Laboratory animal models have a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the neurobiological, physiological and behavioral aspects of this disorder, and developing new treatment strategies. One shortcoming of animal models, including activity based anorexia (ABA) in rodents, is that they cannot fully capture the contextual

Effect of a Game-Based Intervention Designed to Enhance Social Incentives to Increase Physical Activity Among Families: The BE FIT Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Gamification, the application of game design elements such as points and levels in nongame contexts, is often used in digital health interventions, but evidence on its effectiveness is limited. OBJECTIVE: To test the effectiveness of a gamification intervention designed using insights from behavioral economics to enhance social incentives within families to increase physical activity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Behavioral Economics Framingham Incentive Trial (BE FIT) was a randomized clinical trial with a 12-week intervention period and a 12-week follow-up period. The

People are less myopic about future than past collective outcomes.

Myopia involves giving disproportionate weight to outcomes that occur close to the present. Myopia in people's evaluations of political outcomes and proposals threatens effective policymaking. It can lead to inefficient spending just before elections, cause inaction on important future policy challenges, and create incentives for government interventions aimed at boosting short-term performance at the expense of long-term welfare. But, are people generally myopic? Existing evidence comes mostly from studies that disregard either the future or collective outcomes. Political science characterize

Time's ticking! Effects of deadline on the utilization of health services: Evidence from a cluster-randomized controlled trial.

The low utilization of health services in rural areas is an essential factor affecting the health level of rural residents. Based on insights from behavioral economics, this study evaluates the average treatment effect of imposing a deadline on vision-care vouchers (i.e., the voucher-deadline intervention) on the utilization of health services. Using the vision health as a case study, a non-masked cluster-randomized controlled trial was conducted in 13 rural schools of a county in Shaanxi Province of China during 2018-2019. Among 1270 baseline sample students with myopia, 610 students from 6 s

Does effort-cost decision-making relate to real-world motivation in people living with HIV?

INTRODUCTION: Low motivation is frequent in older people with HIV, yet poorly understood. Effort-cost decision-making (ECDM) tasks inspired by behavioral economics have shown promise as indicators of motivation or apathy. These tasks assess the willingness to exert effort to earn a monetary reward, providing an estimate of the subjective "cost" of effort for each participant. Here we sought evidence for a relationship between ECDM task performance and self-reported motivation in a cross-sectional study involving 80 middle-aged and older people with well-controlled HIV infection, a chronic heal

Physician Education and Peer Comparisons to Reduce Cardiovascular Risk Among People Living with HIV: A Stepped-Wedge Cluster Randomized Trial.

Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death among people living with HIV (PLWH). We developed a multilevel implementation strategy to increase evidence-based statin use, which is under-prescribed in PLWH. Through a stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial in seven HIV clinics in Los Angeles, we implemented a physician champion-led education intervention and behavioral economics-informed peer comparisons. Each clinician's statin prescribing rate relative to top-performing physicians was reported back monthly, with language leveraging social norms and self-image. We also conducted post-interv

Effect of Gamification Plus Automated Coaching to Increase Physical Activity Among Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease: The GAMEPAD Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Supervised exercise therapy improves walking performance in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD), but few participate. Interventions leveraging concepts from behavioral economics increase physical activity in patients at high cardiovascular risk, but barriers to physical activity differ in patients with PAD. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, conducted from October 2020 through January 2024, patients with PAD were provided with a wearable fitness tracker, established a baseline daily step count, and set a step goal increase. They were randomly assigned to atten

The psychedelic (-)-2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine [(-)-DOI] demonstrates efficacy in reducing cocaine reward and motivation in male rats.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Overdose fatalities involving cocaine continue to rise with over 5.3 million cocaine users reported in the United States in 2022. The abuse liability of cocaine is reliant upon inhibition of dopamine (DA) reuptake and consequent increase in DA efflux in meso-corticolimbic circuitry that controls reward and motivation. Cocaine also increases serotonin (5-HT) efflux which is integral in cocaine abuse. The 5-HT2A receptor (5-HT2AR) is a key regulator of meso-corticolimbic DA release and controls cellular mechanisms underlying cocaine effects. 5-HT2AR actions contribute i

Graduate Student Literature Review: Implications of preweaning social housing for long-term dairy cattle performance and welfare.

Dairy calf housing remains a focal point of discussion for producers, consumers, and animal welfare scientist. As animal welfare and animal care priorities shift, understanding the impacts social housing types has on the success of dairy heifers is vital for herd longevity and farm economics. Historically, dairy calves are reared in social isolation which can impair performance, behavior, and physiological development. Conversely, social housing of dairy heifers has yielded numerous short-term benefits surrounding cognitive and behavioral development, performance, and the formation of social b

[Health policy interventions: the pathway to public health].

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are currently the main cause of premature death and disability in the world. Most of these NCDs are due to unhealthy lifestyle choices i.e. tobacco, unhealthy diet, lack of physical exercise and alcohol consumption. Studies have shown that health policy interventions aiming at improving diet and physical activity and reducing tobacco consumption are inexpensive, effective and cost saving. In this paper we address the political health policy interventions that have been shown to improve public health. We discuss some of the theories of behavioral economi

What is behind the priority heuristic? A mathematical analysis and comment on Brandstätter, Gigerenzer, and Hertwig (2006).

Comments on the article by E. Brandstätter, G. Gigerenzer, and R. Hertwig. The authors discuss the priority heuristic, a recent model for decisions under risk. They reanalyze the experimental validity of this approach and discuss how these results compare with cumulative prospect theory, the currently most established model in behavioral economics. They also discuss how general models for decisions under risk based on a heuristic approach can be understood mathematically to gain some insight in their limitations. They finally consider whether the priority heuristic model can lead to some under

The Long-Acting D3 Partial Agonist MC-25-41 Attenuates Motivation for Cocaine in Sprague-Dawley Rats.

The dopamine D3 receptor is a prime target for developing treatments for cocaine use disorders (CUDs). In this study, we conducted a pre-clinical investigation of the therapeutic potential of a long-acting, D3 receptor partial agonist, MC-25-41. Male rats were pre-treated with MC-25-41 (vehicle, 1.0, 3.0, 5.6, or 10 mg/kg, intraperitoneal (IP)) five minutes prior to tests of cocaine or sucrose intake on either a progressive ratio schedule of reinforcement or a variable interval 60 s multiple schedule consisting of 4, 15-min components with sucrose or cocaine available in alternating components

Mental Bandwidth is Associated with HIV and Viral Suppression Among Low-Income Women in Philadelphia.

Behavioral economics research suggests poverty may influence behavior by reducing mental bandwidth, increasing future discounting, and increasing risk aversion. It is plausible these decision-making processes are further impaired in the context of HIV or pregnancy. In this cross-sectional study of 86 low-income women in Philadelphia, HIV was associated with lower mental bandwidth (one of two measures) and lower risk aversion. Pregnancy was not associated with any decision-making factors. In secondary analyses, viral suppression was associated with greater mental bandwidth (one of two measures)

Nudge theory and gambling: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Gambling disorder (GD) is a pressing public health concern with significant societal costs. The recently developed nudge theory, which is rooted in behavioral economics, aims to influence the decision-making behaviors of individuals by implementing changes in the environment. AIM: This scoping review aims to synthesize the literature on nudge theory as it relates to gambling. METHODS: This scoping review accords with the Arksey and O'Malley framework, as refined by Levac et al. It includes only articles from peer-reviewed journals that focus, as main themes, on both nudge theory

Future so bright? Delay discounting and consideration of future consequences predict academic performance among college drinkers.

College student drinking is a major public health concern and can result in a range of negative consequences, from acute health risks to decreased academic performance and drop out. Harm reduction interventions have been developed to reduce problems associated with drinking but there is a need to identify specific risk/protective factors related to academic performance among college drinkers. Behavioral economics suggests that chronic alcohol misuse reflects a dysregulated behavioral process or reinforcer pathology-alcohol is overvalued and the value of prosocial rewards are sharply discounted
