To introduce we report the embryological origin of the male genitals and we present the endocrine control of the sex phenotypic differentiation and the most important features of the sexual differentiation abnormalities (ambiguous genitalia of newborn, gonadal dysgenesis, chromosome anomalies). Subsequently we report the classification of cryptorchidism and its correlation with hormonal and histological abnormalities. Furthermore we tried to expose the various different thoughts about testicular descent, anomalies associated with cryptorchidism and implications with malignant degeneration and

One in 5,000 to 1 in 50,000 births have multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1). MEN1 is a hereditary syndrome clinically defined by the presence of two of the following endocrine tumors in the same patient: parathyroid adenomas, entero-pancreatic endocrine tumors and pituitary tumors. Most commonly, patients with MEN1 manifest primarily with signs and symptoms linked to primary hyperparathyroidism. By age 50, it is estimated that 100% of patients with MEN1 will have been diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism. These patients will need to undergo resection of their hyperfunctioning glan

With increasing survival rates across all cancers, survivors represent a growing population that is frequently affected by persistent or permanent hair growth disorders as a result of systemic therapies, radiotherapy, surgical procedures, and therapeutic transplants. These hair disorders include persistent chemotherapy-induced alopecia, persistent radiotherapy-induced alopecia, endocrine therapy-induced alopecia and hirsutism, postsurgery alopecia and localized hypertrichosis, and persistent stem cell transplantation and targeted therapy-induced alopecia. The information contained in this cont

Hereditary pancreatitis is a genetically transmitted condition usually presenting in childhood or adolescence. The natural history of the condition is that recurrent episodes of pancreatitis may be followed by the development of pancreatic exocrine and endocrine failure. Treatment options are limited, usually consisting of surgical drainage procedures whose efficacy is uncertain and whose effect on disease progression is unknown. We report a child with hereditary pancreatitis treated by means of a pancreatic duct stent placed via endoscopic retrograde cholangiopanctreatography resulting in lon

CONTEXT: Somatostatin-producing endocrine tumors of the duodenum are very rare neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract. These tumors may be associated with von Recklinghausen's disease.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 49-year-old female patient with von Recklinghausen's disease and an incidentally diagnosed ampullary neoplasm. The patient was treated with a classical pancreaticoduodenectomy. At surgery, a mass was found in the greater curve of the stomach which was resected using the classic Whipple procedure. Histology and immunohistochemistry showed that the duodenal tumor was an ampu

The authors report a case of neuro-endocrine sarcoidosis, associating panhypopituitarism , diabetes insipidus, and involvement of the optic chiasma with behavioural changes, chronic meningitis and a diffuse pyramidal syndrome. The diagnosis was suggested by the presence of mediastinal lymphadenopathy and confirmed during a surgical procedure to conserve the optic nerves. The clinical course on corticosteroids was unfavourable because of iatrogenic cushing' syndrome and steroid dependence . It was not possible to withdraw steroids, even with the use of immunosuppressors (Methotrexate).

Surgical procedures lead to profound and sustained (up to 1-2 weeks) activation of the pituitary gland, resulting in changes in endocrine function. Questions remain on whether activation of the pituitary influences the threshold and development time-course of postoperative pain. To address these questions, we evaluated postoperative hypersensitivity in female and male rats with ablated pituitary and gonadal hormone productions via hypophysectomy, ovariectomy and gonadectomy, respectively. Plantar incision, a model of acute postoperative pain, or sham operation was performed on rat hind paws. H

OBJECTIVE: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are evidenced-based multidisciplinary programs implemented in the perioperative setting to improve postoperative recovery and attenuate the surgical stress response. However, evidence on their effectiveness in thyroid and parathyroid surgery remains sparse. Therefore, our goal was to investigate the clinical benefits and cost-effectiveness of ERAS protocols for the perioperative management of thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy.

The authors discuss the diagnostic value of xeroradiography, an up-to-date method elaborated and applied for the first time in diagnosing thyroid pathology. Emphasis is placed on the method as it affords on the same xerogram a very good image of the soft tissues and bones. A xeroradiographic image of the cervical and cervico-lateral areas allows an assessment of the position, volume and other changes in the same area. The authors insist that the data gathered in this way allow a more correct evaluation needed in establishing the surgical procedure and in traheoanesthesia. The diagnostic accura

BACKGROUND: Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a common and frequently occurring disease. Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD), and duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection (DPPHR) are important treatment options for patients with chronic pancreatitis. The Beger and Frey procedures are 2 main duodenum-preserving techniques in duodenum-preserving pancreatic head resection (DPPHR) strategies. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the clinical efficacy of DPPHR versus PD, the Beger procedure versus PD, the Frey procedure versus

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B (MEN2B) syndrome is a rare genetic disorder primarily driven by mutations in the RET proto-oncogene. MEN2B exhibits diverse symptoms affecting multiple organ systems, with mucosal neuromas being a prominent feature. These benign tumors contribute to the syndrome's clinical variability, alongside medullary thyroid carcinoma and pheochromocytoma. The article presents a case study of a young girl diagnosed with MEN2B, complicated by laryngeal neuromas leading to respiratory distress post-thyroidectomy. Laryngeal neuromas are exceedingly rare, underscoring the

BACKGROUND: Apart from being a rare endocrine tumor, parathyroid carcinoma is also one of the rarest malignancies in human beings. Parathyroid carcinoma is even more uncommon in haemodialysis patients with end-stage renal disease. The pathogenesis of parathyroid hyperplasia in haemodialysis patients is well known, but the mechanism of development of parathyroid carcinoma in these patients remains unclear.
METHODS: Three cases of parathyroid carcinoma in haemodialysis patients are presented in this study: a 69-year-old male patient and two female patients (67 and 61 years old). In all cases pa

The surgical robot has been demonstrated to have useful applications in urologic, gynecologic, cardiac, general, and endocrine surgery. The development of robotic surgery has enhanced the precision and control of the surgeon in minimally invasive surgical situations specific to these specialties and, more recently, has been applied to the treatment of oropharyngeal tumors in the form of transoral robotic surgery (TORS). The elimination of the need for lip- and mandible-splitting approaches has allowed a reassessment of surgical options for the treatment of tumors that have until recently been

Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) occurs in about 90% of patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1). In contrast to sporadic pHPT, multiple gland disease is most common in MEN1. The appropriate surgical approach is still controversial. The aim of this study was to analyze the results of surgical therapy of pHPT in patients with genetically confirmed MEN1. In an observational study, preoperative data, operative procedures, long-term results, and a possible genotype-phenotype correlation were analyzed in patients with pHPT and genetically confirmed MEN1. According to our results,

DiGeorge syndrome is a congenital genetic disorder that affects the endocrine system, mainly the thymus and parathyroid glands. The syndrome produces different symptoms, which vary in severity and character between patients. It manifests with craniofacial dysmorphism and defects in the heart, parathyroid, and thymus. Patients can present with a palatal deformity and nasal speech. This rare entity is caused mainly due to deletion of chromosome 22q11.2. Radiographic evaluation of DiGeorge syndrome is necessary to define aberrant anatomy, evaluate central nervous system, craniofacial abnormalitie

METHODS: We performed a urinary tract obstruction (UTO) surgical procedure at 93-107 days' gestation in lambs to investigate the relationship between pulmonary hypoplasia and the appearance of pulmonary endocrine cells by quantitative analysis of respiratory tract cells using light microscopic immunohistochemistry.
RESULTS: UTO produced a significant reduction in lung weight, lung/body weight ratio, air capacity, air capacity/body weight ratio (p < 0.01) and radial alveolar count (p < 0.05), which indicated the presence of lung hypoplasia. These foetuses also showed a significant increase in

BACKGROUND: Most surgeons have rapidly accepted the use of minimally invasive surgical approaches for the treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism. The role of the endoscope in neck surgery is still being discussed due to its technical difficulty and complex patient selection criteria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted between April 2010 and April 2013. It included patients diagnosed with sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism (sPHPT) by locating a single adenoma using ultrasound and sestamibi scintigraphy imaging. All patients agreed to be included in the study. Experien

Debilitating abdominal or back pain remains the most common indication for surgery in patients with chronic pancreatitis. The surgical approach to chronic pancreatitis should be individualized based on pancreatic and ductal anatomy, pain characteristics, baseline exocrine and endocrine function, and medical co-morbidity. No single approach is ideal for all patients with chronic pancreatitis. Pancreatic ductal drainage with pancreaticojejunostomy targets patients with a dilated pancreatic duct and produces good early postoperative pain relief; however, 30%-50% of patients experience recurrent s
