Climate change and environmental degradation: bioethical considerations and impact for neonatal care.

Climate change has severe consequences for neonatal health. Neonates are uniquely vulnerable to the impacts of climate change due to their developing bodies and immature immune and thermoregulatory systems. Climate change increases the risk of severe weather events, including extreme heat and natural disasters, as well as pollution and chemical exposures. The physiologic fragility of neonates and dependence on a stable environment require healthcare systems and policymakers to ensure protections are in place to mitigate health risks and potential impacts that will have long-lasting effects on

Brazil's Amazon Oxygen Crisis: How Lives and Health Were Sacrificed During the Peak of COVID-19 to Promote an Agenda with Long-Term Consequences for the Environment, Indigenous Peoples, and Health.

In January 2021, oxygen supplies in the Amazon region's largest city were allowed to run out at the peak of the second wave of the COVID-19 epidemic, shocking the world as hospital patients expired for lack of this basic medical resource in Manaus, which during the first COVID-19 wave had become the world's first city to bury its dead in mass graves. Brazil's authorities used this tragedy to further a political agenda that implies enormous environmental and human-rights consequences. Transport of oxygen was used to promote building a road that, together with its planned side roads, would give

Disability dilemmas and rehabilitation tensions: a twentieth century inheritance.

Although disability has gradually become part of the social justice concept in Western nations since the seventeenth century, and is a current world-wide social concern, it is no way as readily definable or determinable as race, gender, age or even poverty, other issues of social justice. It remains a relative term despite efforts to contain it. The World Health Organization's definition for disability is a restriction or lack of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being, arising as a consequence of physiological, psychological or anat

Development of the InTelligence And Machine LEarning (TAME) Toolkit for Introductory Data Science, Chemical-Biological Analyses, Predictive Modeling, and Database Mining for Environmental Health Research.

Research in environmental health is becoming increasingly reliant upon data science and computational methods that can more efficiently extract information from complex datasets. Data science and computational methods can be leveraged to better identify relationships between exposures to stressors in the environment and human disease outcomes, representing critical information needed to protect and improve global public health. Still, there remains a critical gap surrounding the training of researchers on these in silico methods. We aimed to address this gap by developing the inTelligence And

Multiple drivers and long-term patterns of the ecology of segregation in Latin America.

Segregation is a multidimensional phenomenon deeply entwined with historical, social, and ecological contexts. The ecology of segregation framework explores how social norms institutionalize racism, classism, and power dynamics to drive inequitable patterns of environmental benefits and hazards. The ecology of segregation has thus far been applied in the Global North, yet is relevant but not as well studied in the Global South and specifically Latin America. More work is needed to consider how the framework can be applied in other historic, sociocultural, and governance contexts. This paper ap

Immune-mediated disease caused by climate change-associated environmental hazards: mitigation and adaptation.

Global warming and climate change have increased the pollen burden and the frequency and intensity of wildfires, sand and dust storms, thunderstorms, and heatwaves - with concomitant increases in air pollution, heat stress, and flooding. These environmental stressors alter the human exposome and trigger complex immune responses. In parallel, pollutants, allergens, and other environmental factors increase the risks of skin and mucosal barrier disruption and microbial dysbiosis, while a loss of biodiversity and reduced exposure to microbial diversity impairs tolerogenic immune development. The r

Climate resilient adaptation of coastal amenities for wellbeing.

Blue spaces are recognised as vital public resources that support human health and wellbeing through pathways such as physical activity, psychological restoration and social connection. Coastal environments are especially distinctive for their multisensory stimuli, expansive vistas and cultural significance, with benefits shaped by environmental quality, accessibility and usability. Climate change threatens these benefits via extreme events, such as storm surges and flooding, and gradual processes, including rising sea levels, erosion and warming temperatures, which can also alter people's per

From struggle to strength in African and Middle Eastern newcomers' integration stories to Canada: A participatory health equity research study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Newcomers (immigrants, refugees, and international students) face many personal, gender, cultural, environmental and health system barriers when integrating into a new society. These struggles can affect their health and social care, reducing access to mental health care. This study explores the lived experiences of African and Middle Eastern newcomers to Ontario, Canada. An understanding of newcomer integration challenges, successes and social justice issues is needed to improve health equity and social services. METHODS: In this qualitative study, we used a partic

Socioeconomic vulnerability and differential impact of severe weather-induced power outages.

In response to concerns about increasingly intense Atlantic hurricanes, new federal climate and environmental justice policies aim to mitigate the unequal impact of environmental disasters on economically and socially vulnerable communities. Recent research emphasizes that standard procedures for restoring power following extreme weather could be one significant contributor to these divergent outcomes. Our paper evaluates the hypothesis that more economically and socially vulnerable communities experience longer-duration power outages following hurricanes than less vulnerable communities do, c

Public acceptance of Carbon capture and storage projects: Evidence from southern Louisiana, United States.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) proposals across the U.S. Gulf Coast raise questions about public acceptance, trusted messengers, and justice in communities with long industrial histories. A mixed-methods convergent study of adult residents in Louisiana, U.S. was conducted. A survey produced 466 responses, complemented by semi-structured interviews with 11 community leaders from government agencies, NGOs, and a private company. Ordinal outcomes used Mann-Whitney tests and local acceptance was modeled via logistic regression with familiarity, self-rated knowledge, concern and trust indicators,

Detection of anticoagulant rodenticides by direct analysis in real time time-of-flight mass spectrometry: novel screening techniques and rapid semi-quantitative determination.

Environmental monitoring of rodenticide contamination is often required to address public concern of off-target poisoning, which threatens animal populations and disrupts related ecology. This study aimed to address the shortcomings of current analytical methods for testing water-soluble anticoagulant rodenticide by application of direct analysis in real time in tandem with time-of-flight (DART-ToF) mass spectrometry (MS), an alternative analytical technique offering rapidity, low cost, and robustness. Both positive and negative ion modes were investigated with the aim of establishing a quick

Heat Metrics and Maternal-Child Health Diagnoses in Emergency Departments in the United States: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize current research on associations between heat metrics and emergency department discharge diagnoses for US pregnant women and children from birth to age 18 via a scoping review. BACKGROUND: Climate change directly contributes to extreme weather conditions and environmental changes and indirectly affects health and the health care system. Pregnant women and children are believed to be more susceptible to extreme heat, but few empirical studies have been conducted evaluating effects of heat metrics on these populations. METHODS: Ovid MEDLINE, CIHAHL, SCOPUS, Web of Scien

A method of assessing air toxics concentrations in urban areas using mobile platform measurements.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate an approach to characterize the spatial variability in ambient air concentrations using mobile platform measurements. This approach may be useful for air toxics assessments in Environmental Justice applications, epidemiological studies, and environmental health risk assessments. In this study, we developed and applied a method to characterize air toxics concentrations in urban areas using results of the recently conducted field study in Wilmington, DE. Mobile measurements were collected over a 4- x 4-km area of downtown Wilmington for three compone

Global trends in research on environmental chemical exposure and childhood learning disabilities: insights from a two-decade bibliometric and Latent Dirichlet Allocation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood learning disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders have been increasingly linked to early-life environmental chemical exposures, including air pollutants, heavy metals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and pesticides. Despite growing academic interest, a comprehensive analysis of global research trends and emerging themes in this interdisciplinary field remains lacking. METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database to identify studies published between January 2005 and December 2025. Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Shedding Light on Two Blind Spots in Harm Reduction Discourse.

Harm reduction policies aim to reduce drug-related harms. This has historically involved providing tailored health services to people who use drugs to do so more safely. Social justice is another defining element of harm reduction. This component aims to reduce drug-related stigma and minimise the social harms experienced by people who use drugs by advocating for the decriminalisation of the possession of illicit drugs. However, the harms that occur before drugs reach a user's hands or a country's borders have received less attention in harm reduction. These harms include the environmental dam

Pathways to Crime and Antisocial Behavior: A Critical Analysis of Psychological Research and a Call for Broader Ecological Perspectives.

The United States has one of the highest rates of correctional supervision among all nations in the world, reflecting the disproportionate incarceration of racial minorities and economically disadvantaged groups. Scholars have emphasized the role of structural factors and governmental policies in long-term shifts in crime and incarceration. However, much of the psychological research on crime and antisocial behaviors has not deeply considered this broader context, focusing mostly on individual and proximal environmental risk factors. This article presents a novel synthesis of large cross-disci

Attributing climate-change-related disaster displacement responsibilities along global production chains.

Climate change creates hostile living conditions in various regions, provoking climate-driven migration. The literature points to a polarization between the countries responsible for climate change and the regions suffering its consequences. Given this dichotomy, this study analyses the link between unsustainable consumption by world powers and the increasing vulnerability of some developing countries. We identify the most vulnerable countries to climate migrations and perform a responsibility assessment on environmental migration through historical consumption-based contributions to climate c

The Intersection of the "Opioid Crisis" with Changes in US Immigration Policy: Contextual Barriers to Substance Abuse Research with Latinx Communities.

One of the 12 Grand Challenges facing contemporary social work is to close the health gap experienced by those in historically marginalized communities (Uehara et al., 2013). As social workers, we seek to understand the individual, interpersonal, social, and environmental factors along with the structural inequities leading to initiation and continuation of substance misuse. We are constantly contextualizing the circumstances under which substance misuse occurs, as well as contextualizing our approaches to addressing this issue from both a public health and social justice perspective. Rift Valley fever and a new paradigm of research and development for zoonotic disease control.

Although Rift Valley fever is a disease that, through its wider societal effects, disproportionately affects vulnerable communities with poor resilience to economic and environmental challenge, Rift Valley fever virus has since its discovery in 1931 been neglected by major global donors and disease control programs. We describe recent outbreaks affecting humans and animals and discuss the serious socioeconomic effects on the communities affected and the slow pace of development of new vaccines. We also discuss the mixed global response, which has largely been fueled by the classification of th
